1Now it came to pass on the second Sabbath of the first rank that He was walking through the grain fields; and His disciples were plucking the ears and were eating, after rubbing them in their hands. 2But some of the Pharisees said to them, "Why are you doing that which is not lawful to do on the Sabbaths?" 3And Jesus answered and said to them, "Have you not read even this, that which David did when he himself hungered, and those who were with him? 4How he went into the house of God and took the loaves of showbread, and he ate of them, and also gave some to those with him, which it is not lawful to eat except for the priests only?" 5And He said to them, "The Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

6Now it also came to pass on another Sabbath that He went into the synagogue and taught; and a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7And the scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against Him. 8But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, "Arise and stand in the midst." And he arose and stood in their midst. 9Then Jesus said to them, "I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful to do good or to do evil on the Sabbaths? to save life or to destroy it?" 10And after looking around on them all, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he did so, and his hand was restored as sound as the other. 11But they were filled with rage, and consulted with one another as to what they should do with Jesus.

12Now it came to pass in those days that He went up into the mountain to pray, and He spent the entire night in prayer to God. 13And when it was day, He called His disciples to Him and chose from them twelve, whom He also named apostles: 14Simon, whom He also named Peter, and his brother Andrew; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15Matthew and Thomas; James, the son of Alpheus, and Simon who was called Zealot; 16Judas, brother of James; and Judas Iscariot, who also became the betrayer.

17And after descending with them, He stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples; and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, came to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; 18And those who were tormented by unclean spirits also came; and they were healed. 19And all the crowd sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed all.

20And He lifted up His eyes upon His disciples and said, "Blessed are you, the poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21Blessed are those who hunger now, for you shall be filled. Blessed are those who weep now, for you shall laugh. 22Blessed are you when men shall hate you, and when they shall cut you off, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as wicked, for the Son of man's sake. 23Rejoice in that day and leap for joy; for behold, great is your reward in heaven; for their fathers did these same things to the prophets.

24But woe to you, the rich, for you are receiving your consolation! 25Woe to you who have been filled, for you shall hunger! Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep! 26Woe to you when all men shall speak well of you! For their fathers did these same things to the false prophets.

27But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, and do good to those who hate you. 28Bless those who curse you, and pray for those who despitefully use you. 29If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other cheek also; and if anyone takes your cloak, do not forbid your coat also. 30Give to everyone who asks you; and if anyone takes what is yours, do not ask for it back. 31And exactly as you would have men do to you, you do the same to them also. 32But if you love only those who love you, what praise is it to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33And if you do good only to those who are doing good to you, what praise is it to you? For even sinners do the same. 34And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what praise is it to you? For even sinners lend to sinners, that they may receive as much again. 35But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest; for He is good to the unthankful and the wicked. 36Therefore, you also be compassionate, even as your Father is compassionate.

37And do not judge others, so that you yourself will not be judged in any way. Do not condemn others, so that you will not be condemned in any way. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven. 38Give, and it shall be given to you. Good measure, pressed down and shaken together and running over, shall they give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you mete out, it shall be measured again to you."

39Then He spoke a parable to them, saying, "Is a blind man able to lead a blind man? Will not both fall into the ditch? 40A disciple is not above his teacher; but everyone who is perfected shall be like his teacher. 41And why do you look at the sliver that is in your brother's eye, but you do not perceive the beam that is in your own eye? 42Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, allow me to cast out the sliver that is in your eye,' but you do not see the beam that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First cast out the beam from your own eye, and then shall you see clearly to cast out the sliver that is in your brother's eye.

43For there is not a good tree that is producing corrupt fruit; nor is there a corrupt tree that is producing good fruit. 44For every tree is known by its own fruit; for they do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather a bunch of grapes from a bramble. 45The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and the wicked man out of the wicked treasure of his heart brings forth that which is wicked; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

46And why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' but you do not practice what I say? 47Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and practices them, I will show you what he is like: 48He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock; and a flood came, and the torrent beat against that house, but could not shake it, because it was founded on the rock. 49But the one who has heard My words and has not practiced them is like a man who built a house on top of the ground, without a foundation; and when the torrent beat against it, it fell at once, and the ruin of that house was great."
