Berean Study Bible Zion’s Salvation and New NameThe speaker’s resolve reflects the Lord’s covenant purpose for Zion, expressed through His prophet. Zion, centered in Jerusalem, represents the place God chose for His name and the people He redeemed for Himself. Though Jerusalem had known judgment, exile, and desolation because of sin, God would not abandon His promised restoration. Psa 102:13-16 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,… and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep still, God’s concern for Jerusalem involves active faithfulness, not mere sympathy. He would continue declaring, accomplishing, and defending His purposes until the city’s reproach was removed. Jerusalem’s future restoration would demonstrate that the Lord remains faithful to His covenant with Israel. Psa 122:6-9 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you… until her righteousness shines like a bright light, Jerusalem’s righteousness would be publicly displayed as God restored His people and established justice in their midst. The city’s renewed standing would come from the Lord’s saving work, not from human merit. Isaiah repeatedly connects Zion’s future glory with the revelation of God’s own righteousness before the nations. Psa 37:6 He will bring forth your righteousness like the dawn,… her salvation like a blazing torch. God’s deliverance would be as visible and unmistakable as a torch burning in the darkness. The restored Zion would become a witness to the nations of the Lord’s power, holiness, and faithfulness. The promised light anticipates the day when God’s glory will dwell openly with His redeemed people. Psa 27:1 Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation—… Nations will see your righteousness, Zion’s vindication will be public before the Gentile world. The righteousness displayed in Israel will be God’s saving work, reversing the reproach, desolation, and exile that had marked her history. In the coming restoration, the nations will recognize that the Lord has kept His covenant and redeemed His people. The worldwide witness of God’s righteousness also anticipates the gospel going to every nation through Christ. Isa 61:11 For as the earth brings forth its growth, … and all kings your glory. Earthly rulers, who once oppressed or ignored Israel, will behold the glory God places upon His people. Their recognition points beyond political change to the future reign of God, when His authority is openly acknowledged among all peoples. Israel’s glory will not arise from military strength or human achievement, but from the presence and favor of the Lord. Isa 60:3 Nations will come to your light, and kings… You will be called by a new name A new name marks a changed condition and a renewed relationship with God. Abram became Abraham, and Jacob became Israel when God confirmed His covenant purposes for them. Zion, once called Forsaken and Desolate, will receive names declaring God’s delight and covenant union with her later in the chapter. God’s redeemed people also share in this renewal through Christ, becoming a new creation. Rev 2:17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says… that the mouth of the LORD will bestow. The Lord Himself establishes Zion’s new identity. His declaration cannot be overturned by enemies, former shame, or human judgment. God’s spoken name reveals His sovereign commitment to restore His people and fulfill His promises. Isa 1:20 But if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured… You will be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, Restored Zion will be displayed as the Lord’s honored possession, no longer marked by abandonment or reproach. A crown signifies beauty, victory, dignity, and royal favor. The Lord Himself holds His people securely and presents their renewed glory before the nations. Israel’s restoration fulfills God’s covenant purpose to make His people His treasured possession (Exodus 19:5). Isa 28:5 On that day the LORD of Hosts will be a crown of glory,… a royal diadem in the palm of your God. The royal diadem portrays God’s people as belonging to the King and sharing in the dignity of His kingdom. His palm conveys personal care, protection, and unfailing possession; He has engraved His people upon His hands (Isaiah 49:16). Zion’s future splendor anticipates the holy bride prepared for Christ and the final reign of the King of Kings (Revelation 19:16; 21:2). Isa 49:16 Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;… No longer will you be called Forsaken, Israel’s history included exile, invasion, and covenant judgment, conditions that made the nation appear abandoned. The Lord promises that rejection will not define His people’s future. His restoring mercy will publicly reverse the disgrace brought by sin and judgment. Isa 54:6 For the LORD has called you back, like a wife deserted… nor your land named Desolate; Judah’s land had been emptied and devastated by foreign powers, especially in the Babylonian exile. God will restore both the people and their inheritance, showing that His covenant purposes for Zion and the land have not failed. Ezk 36:34-35 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of… but you will be called Hephzibah, Hephzibah means “My delight is in her.” The Lord’s delight rests on His redeemed people because He has chosen, cleansed, and renewed them. The name also recalls the royal household of Judah, since Hephzibah was the mother of King Manasseh. Psa 149:4 For the LORD takes pleasure in His people;… and your land Beulah; Beulah means “married.” The restored land will no longer stand empty and bereaved but will be joined to its people in enduring fruitfulness and security. Marriage imagery portrays the Lord’s covenant commitment, love, and faithfulness toward Zion. Isa 54:5 For your husband is your Maker—the LORD of Hosts… for the LORD will take delight in you, Restoration begins in the Lord’s gracious purpose rather than Israel’s deserving. He delights to save His people, remove their reproach, and establish them as a testimony to His holiness before the nations. Zep 3:17 The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save.… and your land will be His bride. The Lord’s union with His people brings lasting blessing to the land He gave them. This covenant picture anticipates the fuller biblical revelation of God dwelling with His redeemed people, ultimately fulfilled in the marriage of Christ and His bride. Hos 2:16-20 In that day,” declares the LORD, “you will call Me… For as a young man marries a young woman, Marriage portrays covenant devotion, delight, and enduring union. Zion’s restoration will not be a bare return from desolation but a joyful new beginning marked by fruitfulness and belonging. Pro 5:18-19 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice… so your sons will marry you; Zion’s children, scattered through judgment and exile, will return to inhabit and cherish the land God gave them. The land once called Forsaken and Desolate will again be filled with God’s people, united to their inheritance as a bride is joined to her husband. Isa 49:17-18 Your builders hasten back; your destroyers and wreckers… and as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, A bridegroom’s joy reflects the public celebration and personal affection of a covenant union. God’s restoration of Jerusalem arises from His faithful love, not merely from Israel’s recovery of strength or status. Jhn 3:29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom… so your God will rejoice over you. The Lord delights in His redeemed people and restores them to fellowship with Himself. Zephaniah 3:17 likewise portrays God rejoicing over His people, a promise ultimately fulfilled in the full restoration and joy of His kingdom. Zep 3:17 The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save.… On your walls, O Jerusalem, Jerusalem’s walls represented the security and restored dignity of the city God had chosen for His name. Isaiah looks beyond Jerusalem’s desolation to its future restoration, when the Lord will again establish Zion before the nations. The city also points forward to the heavenly Jerusalem, where God’s people will dwell in perfect safety and glory. Isa 49:16 Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;… I have posted watchmen; The Lord Himself appoints watchmen for Jerusalem. Like guards who stood on the walls to warn of danger, God’s servants are called to guard His people through faithful proclamation, spiritual discernment, and prayer. Prophets such as Ezekiel bore this responsibility, warning Israel and calling the people back to covenant faithfulness. Ezk 33:7 As for you, O son of man, I have made you a watchman… they will never be silent day or night. The watchmen’s service continues without interruption because Jerusalem’s restoration is central to God’s declared purpose. Their unceasing voices include prayer, proclamation, and praise, joining vigilance with confidence that the Lord will fulfill His promises. Rev 4:8 And each of the four living creatures had six wings… You who call on the LORD Those who remember the Lord and appeal to Him are summoned to share in this watchful ministry. God’s people are not passive while awaiting His work; they are to seek Him earnestly and bring His promises before Him in prayer. Rom 10:13 Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord… shall take no rest for yourselves, Persistent intercession reflects confidence in God’s faithfulness rather than doubt about His willingness to act. The call anticipates the command not to cease praying until the Lord establishes Jerusalem and makes her a praise in the earth. 1Th 5:17 Pray without ceasing. nor give Him any rest God appoints watchmen to persevere in prayer and to plead for the fulfillment of His covenant promises. Their intercession is not an attempt to overcome divine reluctance, but participation in God’s declared purpose. Jesus likewise taught His disciples always to pray and not lose heart (Luke 18:1–8). The urgent concern is Zion’s restoration and the public vindication of God’s name among the nations. Luk 18:1-8 Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray… until He establishes Jerusalem Jerusalem is the city God chose as the place of His earthly dwelling and the center of Israel’s worship (Psalm 132:13–14). Though the city has known judgment, destruction, and exile because of Israel’s sin, God promises its future restoration. The prophets foresee a Jerusalem marked by holiness, security, righteousness, and the presence of the Lord (Zechariah 8:3; 14:9–11). Psa 147:2 The LORD builds up Jerusalem; He gathers the exiles… and makes her the praise of the earth. The restored Jerusalem will display God’s faithfulness before all peoples. Nations will recognize the Lord’s glory, righteousness, and saving power as they see His promises to Israel fulfilled (Isaiah 60:1–3). The city’s future honor finds its fullest realization under the reign of the Messiah, when peace and justice extend from Jerusalem to the whole earth. Jer 33:9 So this city will bring Me renown, joy, praise… The LORD has sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm: The Lord pledges His own sovereign strength as the guarantee of His word. His right hand portrays victorious authority, and His mighty arm reveals His power to save, protect, and fulfill every purpose. Because no authority is greater than God, His oath establishes the unchangeable certainty of Zion’s restoration (Hebrews 6:13). Psa 89:13 Mighty is Your arm; strong is Your hand.… “Never again will I give your grain to your enemies for food, Israel had repeatedly endured the covenant judgments foretold in Deuteronomy, including the loss of harvests to invading nations (Deuteronomy 28:33). The Lord now declares an end to such plunder. Grain, the basic provision of life, would remain in the hands of those who cultivated the land under God’s protection. Lev 26:16 then this is what I will do to you: I will bring upon you… nor will foreigners drink the new wine for which you have toiled. New wine represented agricultural abundance and covenant blessing. Foreign armies had often consumed the labor of Israel through raids, occupation, and siege, but the Lord promises security, peace, and the enjoyment of the fruit of faithful labor. The oath anticipates the full restoration of God’s people, when the land will yield abundantly and its blessings will no longer be stolen by enemies. Deu 28:39 You will plant and cultivate vineyards,… For those who harvest grain will eat it The LORD promises that His restored people will enjoy the produce of their own labor rather than seeing it seized by invading nations. The assurance reverses the covenant curse that strangers would consume Israel’s crops (Deuteronomy 28:33). Harvest, once vulnerable to war and oppression, will become evidence of God’s protection, justice, and faithful provision. Psa 128:2 For when you eat the fruit of your labor,… and praise the LORD, Enjoyment of the harvest will lead Israel to acknowledge the Giver rather than merely celebrate material abundance. The restored land will produce worship as well as food, joining daily provision to thanksgiving before the LORD (Psalm 107:8–9). Psa 22:26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD… and those who gather grapes will drink the wine Vineyards, often ruined during invasion or abandoned in judgment, will again yield wine for those who cultivated them. Wine pictures rejoicing, peace, and covenant blessing, with no enemy present to steal the fruit of patient labor (Isaiah 5:5–7; Psalm 104:15). Deu 11:14 then I will provide rain for your land in season,… in My holy courts.” The blessings of the land will be received in conscious fellowship with the LORD and connected to the worship of His sanctuary. Israel’s restoration centers not merely on security and prosperity, but on renewed access to God, grateful worship, and life ordered around His holy presence. Psa 100:4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise… Go out, go out through the gates; The urgent command summons God’s people to leave captivity and return openly to Zion. Jerusalem’s gates, once associated with ruin and judgment, would again become places of restored life, commerce, worship, and fellowship. The repeated call presses God’s servants to act in faith and to carry His message beyond the boundaries of their own community. Isa 52:11 Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing;… prepare the way for the people! A clear route was needed for the exiles returning from Babylon to the land promised to their fathers. Isaiah 40:3 similarly anticipates the preparation of the way for the Lord, ultimately fulfilled in John the Baptist’s ministry before Christ. God’s people are to remove hindrances that keep others from hearing, receiving, and obeying His word. Isa 40:3 A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for the LORD… Build it up, build up the highway; The raised highway portrays a safe and direct path for the redeemed. God Himself would lead His people home, reversing the shame and displacement caused by their sin and judgment. The image also points beyond Israel’s return to the salvation provided through Jesus Christ, the only way to the Father. Isa 35:8 And there will be a highway called the Way of Holiness.… clear away the stones; Stones could obstruct travelers, injure animals, and make a road impassable. Spiritual obstacles—including sin, false worship, unbelief, and neglect of God’s commands—must likewise be removed. The Lord prepares hearts through repentance and truth so that people may walk in His ways. Isa 57:14 And it will be said, “Build it up, build it up,… raise a banner for the nations! A banner lifted high gathered people around a leader and announced a public call. Israel’s restoration was never intended to end with Israel alone; the nations were to see the Lord’s saving power and come to His light. Christ fulfills this promise as the Savior proclaimed among all peoples, gathering Jews and Gentiles into one redeemed people. Isa 11:12 He will raise a banner for the nations and gather… Behold, the LORD has proclaimed to the ends of the earth, The Lord’s announcement reaches beyond Israel to every nation, declaring His sovereign purpose openly before the world. Israel’s restoration would display God’s faithfulness and point the nations toward the salvation He provides. Isa 48:20 Leave Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans! Declare it… “Say to Daughter Zion: Jerusalem and the covenant people are addressed with the tenderness of a father toward his daughter. Though Zion had known judgment and exile, the Lord had not abandoned His promises to David, Jerusalem, and His people. Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph… See, your Savior comes! Deliverance is not merely an event but is bound to the coming of the Savior. Jesus fulfilled the hope of Zion when He entered Jerusalem as the promised King, bringing salvation through His sacrificial death and victorious resurrection. Isa 35:4 Say to those with anxious hearts: “Be strong, do not fear!… Look, His reward is with Him, The returning King brings the full blessing secured by His saving work. Revelation 22:12 echoes Isaiah’s promise as Christ declares that He is coming with reward to repay each person according to his work. Rev 22:12 “Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me,… and His recompense goes before Him.” The Savior’s arrival also establishes righteous judgment. God will vindicate His faithful people, expose wickedness, and fulfill every promise with perfect justice. Isa 40:10 Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might,… And they will be called the Holy People, Israel’s holiness rests on the Lord’s covenant choice and sanctifying work, not on human merit. As at Sinai, God sets His people apart to belong to Him and to display His character among the nations (Exodus 19:6; Deuteronomy 7:6). Deu 7:6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God.… the Redeemed of The LORD; The Lord who redeemed Israel from Egypt also promises deliverance from exile, oppression, and the consequences of sin. Redemption reveals His power, faithfulness, and personal claim upon His people, ultimately fulfilled through the saving work of Christ. Psa 107:2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed… and you will be called Sought Out, Zion, once afflicted and seemingly abandoned, will be known as the object of God’s faithful pursuit. The Lord gathers His scattered people as a shepherd seeks his sheep and restores them to safety and fellowship (Ezekiel 34:11–16). Ezk 34:11-12 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I Myself… A City Not Forsaken. Jerusalem will no longer bear the shame of desolation or divine judgment. God’s presence among His restored people secures the city’s future and anticipates the day when He dwells with His people forever (Revelation 21:2–3). 1Sa 12:22 Indeed, for the sake of His great name… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
