The Fool Says There Is No God

For the choirmaster.

Prepared for use in Israel’s gathered worship, this psalm was entrusted to the choirmaster, the leader responsible for its musical presentation.

Psa 4:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.…
Psa 5:1 For the choirmaster, to be accompanied by flutes.…
Psa 6:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments,…

Of David.

David speaks as Israel’s king and as one who knew both the reality of sin and the faithfulness of God.

2Sa 23:1 These are the last words of David: “The oracle of David…
Act 4:25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of Your servant,…
Psa 3:1 A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.…

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”

The fool is marked by rebellion against God, not merely lack of ability. His denial rises from within and rejects God’s rule, judgment, and authority over life.

Psa 53:1 For the choirmaster. According to Mahalath.…
Psa 10:4 In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him;…
Rom 1:21-22 For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him…

They are corrupt; their acts are vile.

Rejecting God produces moral ruin. Sin distorts human conduct, leading people into deeds that offend God and harm others.

Gen 6:12 And God looked upon the earth and saw that it was corrupt;…
Tit 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their actions…
Isa 1:4 Alas, O sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity…

There is no one who does good.

Humanity, left to itself, does not meet God’s standard of righteousness. All stand guilty before Him and need the salvation He provides.

Rom 3:10-12 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.…
Ecc 7:20 Surely there is no righteous man on earth…
Isa 64:6 Each of us has become like something unclean,…

The LORD looks down from heaven

God reigns above all creation and sees the conduct of mankind without limitation. His heavenly throne does not make Him distant from the world; He observes and judges human affairs with perfect knowledge.

Psa 53:2 God looks down from heaven upon the sons of men…
Psa 33:13-14 The LORD looks down from heaven; He sees all the sons…
Psa 11:4 The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD is on His throne…

upon the sons of men

His examination includes all people, without exception. Humanity stands accountable before its Creator, whose judgment reaches every nation, generation, and individual.

1Ki 8:39 For You alone know the hearts of all men—…
Job 34:21 For His eyes are on the ways of a man…
Dan 4:17 This decision is the decree of the watchers,…

to see if any understand,

God looks for those who recognize their condition, acknowledge His authority, and live according to His truth. True understanding begins with reverence for Him rather than human wisdom.

Pro 28:5 Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek…
Psa 92:6 A senseless man does not know, and a fool…
1Co 2:14 The natural man does not accept the things that…

if any seek God.

The search reveals humanity’s natural refusal to seek the Lord on its own. The psalm prepares for the need for God’s saving grace, fulfilled in Christ, who brings sinners into fellowship with God.

Rom 3:10-12 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.…
Jer 29:13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me…
2Ch 15:2 So he went out to meet Asa and said to him,…

All have turned away,

Humanity has deliberately departed from God’s righteous ways, following the pattern of rebellion first seen in Eden. Sin is not merely weakness or mistake but a refusal to live under God’s authority.

Isa 53:6 We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned…
Deu 9:16 And I saw how you had sinned against the LORD your God;…
Jer 2:13 For My people have committed two evils:……

they have together become corrupt;

The fall has affected the whole human race. Like the world before the flood, mankind’s ways are spoiled by sin, and no society or generation escapes its effects.

Gen 6:12 And God looked upon the earth and saw that it was corrupt;…
Deu 32:5 His people have acted corruptly toward Him;…
Eph 4:22 put off your former way of life, your old self…

there is no one who does good,

Measured by God’s perfect holiness, no person produces the righteousness required to stand innocent before Him. Human effort cannot remove guilt or restore the broken relationship caused by sin.

Rom 3:10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.
Ecc 7:20 Surely there is no righteous man on earth…
Mic 7:2 The godly man has perished from the earth…

not even one.

No exception exists among fallen people. Only Jesus Christ lived in complete obedience to God, and through Him sinners may receive the righteousness they cannot attain themselves.

Rom 3:12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless;…
Job 14:4 Who can bring out clean from unclean? No one!
1Ki 8:46 When they sin against You—for there is no one…

Will the workers of iniquity never learn?

The wicked persist in rebellion despite the evidence of God’s authority and the consequences of their sin. Their evil is not accidental but deliberate, revealing hearts hardened against truth and justice.

Jer 4:22 For My people are fools; they have not known Me.…
Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…
Psa 82:5 They do not know or understand; they wander in the darkness;…

They devour my people like bread;

God’s people are treated as prey by those who exploit, oppress, and destroy without restraint. Such cruelty had marked Israel’s history as surrounding nations invaded the land, enslaved its people, and sought to erase its worship of the LORD.

Mic 3:3 You eat the flesh of my people after stripping off…
Jer 10:25 For they have devoured Jacob; they have consumed him…
Psa 79:7 for they have devoured Jacob and devastated his homeland.

they refuse to call upon the LORD.

Their violence flows from rejection of God. Rather than acknowledging His rule or seeking His mercy, they live in proud independence, refusing the worship and obedience owed to Him.

Isa 43:22 But you have not called on Me, O Jacob, …
Psa 79:6 Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge…
Hos 7:7 All of them are hot as an oven, and they devour their rulers…

There they are, overwhelmed with dread,

The wicked are seized by fear when God exposes their rebellion and brings His judgment near. Their terror reveals that they cannot escape His authority or deny their guilt before Him.

Isa 33:14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling grips the ungodly…
Job 18:11 Terrors frighten him on every side and…
Pro 28:1 The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous…

for God is in the company of the righteous.

God remains with those who fear Him and walk in obedience to His will. His presence distinguishes the righteous from the wicked, providing protection and confirming that He will uphold His people.

Psa 1:6 For the LORD guards the path of the righteous,…
Psa 5:12 For surely You, O LORD, bless the righteous;…
Pro 15:29 The LORD is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayer…

You sinners frustrate the plans of the oppressed,

The wicked scorn and hinder those who seek justice, often taking advantage of people with little power or protection. Their actions reveal contempt not only for the needy but also for God’s order, which requires righteousness and care for the vulnerable.

Isa 10:1-2 Woe to those who enact unjust statutes…
Psa 10:2 In pride the wicked pursue the needy; let them be caught…
Job 5:12 He thwarts the schemes of the crafty, so that their hands…

yet the LORD is their shelter.

God remains the defender of those harmed by human injustice. Though the oppressed may lack earthly strength or influence, they are not abandoned; the Lord provides refuge, preserves His people, and will judge the wicked.

Psa 9:9 The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold…
Psa 61:3 For You have been my refuge, a tower of strength…
Psa 46:1 For the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah.…

Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion!

Zion, Jerusalem’s holy hill and the location of the temple, represented the dwelling place of God among His people. David longs for the day when God will openly deliver Israel from its enemies and from the corruption described in the psalm. Israel’s ultimate salvation would come through the Messiah, sent according to God’s covenant promises.

Psa 53:6 Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion!…
Rom 11:26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:…
Isa 59:20 The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob…

When the LORD restores His captive people,

God’s restoration includes bringing back those oppressed, scattered, or held under foreign rule. Israel experienced such restoration after the Babylonian exile, yet the hope also reaches beyond any single national return to God’s complete redemption of His people.

Psa 126:1 When the LORD restored the captives of Zion,…
Jer 29:14 I will be found by you, declares the LORD, …
Ezk 39:25 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…

let Jacob rejoice,

Jacob, the father of the twelve tribes, stands for the whole covenant nation. Their rejoicing would arise from seeing the LORD act faithfully on their behalf.

Jer 31:7 For this is what the LORD says: “Sing with joy for Jacob;…
Psa 81:1 For the choirmaster. According to Gittith. Of Asaph.…
Psa 126:3 The LORD has done great things for us; we are filled…

let Israel be glad!

God’s deliverance would replace the grief of His people with lasting joy. The fulfillment of this hope is found in Christ, who saves His people from sin and will finally establish His righteous kingdom.

Psa 149:2 Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; let the children of Zion…
Jol 2:23 Be glad, O children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD…
Psa 68:3 But the righteous will be glad and rejoice before God;…
