How Long, O LORD?

For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

Intended for public worship, this psalm was entrusted to the leader responsible for Israel’s sacred music. David wrote as both king and worshiper, drawing from real seasons of suffering and dependence on the LORD. The psalm’s setting in corporate worship allowed God’s people to voice grief together while continuing to seek Him.

Psa 4:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.…
Psa 5:1 For the choirmaster, to be accompanied by flutes.…
Psa 6:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments,…

How long, O LORD?

David opens with an urgent cry born from prolonged trouble. His repeated question reveals the strain of waiting when God’s help seems delayed. Rather than turning away, he brings his anguish directly to the LORD.

Psa 6:3 My soul is deeply distressed. How long, O LORD, how long?
Hab 1:2 How long, O LORD, must I call for help…
Psa 74:10 How long, O God, will the enemy taunt You?…

Will You forget me forever?

David feels abandoned, as though God has withdrawn His care and left him in affliction. Yet the question rests on the knowledge that the covenant God does not truly forget His people. His silence is painful, but it is not proof that He has ceased to be faithful.

Lam 5:20 Why have You forgotten us forever? Why have You forsaken us…
Psa 44:24 Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction…
Isa 49:14-15 But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me;…

How long will You hide Your face from me?

The LORD’s face represents His favor, protection, and fellowship. David longs for the return of that nearness after experiencing what feels like divine distance. His lament expresses the sorrow of a believer who knows God’s presence and grieves its apparent absence.

Psa 88:14 Why, O LORD, do You reject me? Why do You hide Your face…
Psa 27:9 Hide not Your face from me, nor turn away Your servant in anger.…
Deu 31:17-18 On that day My anger will burn against them,…

How long must I wrestle in my soul,

David describes the exhausting conflict of carrying fear, uncertainty, and unanswered questions within himself. Though he trusts God, prolonged trouble has left him struggling to reconcile God’s faithfulness with his present circumstances.

Psa 6:3 My soul is deeply distressed. How long, O LORD, how long?
Psa 42:5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me?…
Psa 77:2 In the day of trouble I sought the Lord;…

with sorrow in my heart each day?

His grief is not momentary but continual. The burden of danger and apparent delay in deliverance has turned each day into a season of mourning.

Psa 38:6 I am bent and brought low; all day long I go about mourning.
Psa 42:3 My tears have been my food both day and night,…
Pro 15:13 A joyful heart makes a cheerful countenance,…

How long will my enemy dominate me?

David faces an enemy whose power seems unchecked, likely reflecting the threats he endured during Saul’s pursuit of him. His question is a plea for God to act against those who oppose the righteous and to restore justice.

Psa 56:1-2 Be merciful to me, O God, for men are hounding me;…
Psa 41:11 By this I know that You delight in me, for my enemy…
Psa 25:2 In You, my God, I trust. Do not let me be put to shame;…

Consider me and respond, O LORD my God.

David appeals to the God with whom he lives in covenant fellowship, asking Him to turn from apparent silence and act on his behalf. His prayer rests on confidence that the Lord sees his distress and has power to deliver.

Psa 27:7 Hear, O LORD, my voice when I call; be merciful…
Psa 86:6 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and attend to my plea for mercy.
Psa 143:1 A Psalm of David. O LORD, hear my prayer.…

Give light to my eyes,

He asks for restored strength, clarity, and life as his suffering has left him near collapse. God alone can renew him and sustain him through the danger before him.

Pro 29:13 The poor man and the oppressor have this in common:…
Psa 19:8 The precepts of the LORD are right, bringing joy…
1Sa 14:29 “My father has brought trouble to the land,”…

lest I sleep in death,

Death appears imminent unless the Lord intervenes. David brings his fear directly to God, trusting Him as the giver and preserver of life.

Jhn 11:11-13 He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus…
1Th 4:13-14 Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed…
Dan 12:2 And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake…

lest my enemy say, “I have overcome him,”

David fears that his enemies will interpret his suffering as proof that they have defeated him and that God has abandoned him. Such a victory would bring dishonor not only to David but also to the Lord whose protection David sought.

Psa 41:11 By this I know that You delight in me, for my enemy…
Psa 25:2 In You, my God, I trust. Do not let me be put to shame;…
Psa 35:21 They gape at me and say, “Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen!”

and my foes rejoice when I fall.

His adversaries would celebrate his collapse as public confirmation of their power. David’s appeal rests on confidence that God will not allow the wicked to have the final word over one who trusts in Him.

Psa 30:1 A Psalm. A song for the dedication of the temple. Of David.…
Mic 7:8 Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen…
Psa 38:16 For I said, “Let them not gloat over me—those who taunt me…

But I have trusted in Your loving devotion;

David turns from distress to confidence in God’s faithful covenant love. Though his circumstances remain difficult, he rests in the Lord’s unchanging mercy and commitment to His people.

Psa 52:8 But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God;…
Psa 33:18 Surely the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him…
Psa 32:10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but loving devotion…

my heart will rejoice in Your salvation.

He looks ahead to God’s deliverance with certainty, knowing the Lord saves those who call upon Him. The anticipated rescue brings inward joy, pointing beyond present danger to the full salvation God provides.

Psa 9:14 that I may declare all Your praises—that within the gates…
Psa 35:9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD…
Hab 3:18 yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice…

I will sing to the LORD,

David closes his lament with a resolved commitment to worship, turning from distress to confidence in God’s saving care.

Exo 15:1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:…
Psa 96:1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD…
Psa 104:33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise…

for He has been good to me.

God’s past faithfulness gives David reason to praise Him despite present trouble, recognizing the Lord’s mercy, provision, and covenant care.

Psa 116:7 Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has been good……
Psa 118:1 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;…
Psa 34:8 Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man…
