To the chiefe musition vpon Sosanim (a psalme) of Dauid. Saue me O Lorde: for waters haue entred in vnto my soule. | Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. | For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David. Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. |
I am ouer the head in deepe myre where I feele no grounde: I plunge in deepe waters where the streame ouerwhelmeth me. | I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. | I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me. |
I am weery of crying, my throte is drye: my syght fayleth me through the long attendaunce that I haue geuen vpon my Lorde. | I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God. | I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. |
They that hate me without a cause are mo then the heeres of my head: they that are myne enemies and woulde destroy me giltlesse are mightie, I payde them the thynges that I neuer toke. | More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore? | Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal. |
God thou knowest my folly: and my faultes are not hyd from thee. | O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you. | You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you. |
Let not them that trust in thee O Lorde God of hoastes, be for my cause ashamed: let not those that seke thee, be through me confounded O Lorde of Israel. | Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel. | Lord, the LORD Almighty, may those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me; God of Israel, may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me. |
For thy sake haue I suffered reprofe, shame hath couered my face: | For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face. | For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face. |
(69:7) I am become a straunger vnto my brethren, euen an aliaunt vnto my mothers children. | I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons. | I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother’s children; |
(69:8) For the zeale of thine house hath euen eaten me: and the rebukes of them that rebuked thee, are fallen vpon me. | For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. | for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. |
(69:9) And I wept chastenyng my soule with fastyng: and that was turned to my reproofe. | When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach. | When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn; |
(69:10) Also I put on sackcloth for my garment: and they iested at me. | When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. | when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me. |
(69:11) They that sit in the gate speake agaynst me: and they that drynke strong drynke make songes vpon me. | I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me. | Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards. |
(69:12) But I make my prayer vnto thee O God in an acceptable tyme: heare me O Lord in the multitude of thy mercie, according to the trueth of thy saluation. | But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness. | But I pray to you, LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation. |
(69:13) Take me out of the myre, that I sincke not: oh let me be delyuered from them that hate me, & out of the deepe waters. | Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. | Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters. |
(69:14) Let not the water fludde drowne me, neither let the deepe swalowe me vp: & let not the pyt shut her mouth vpon me. | Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me. | Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me. |
(69:15) Heare me O God, for thy louyng kindnesse is comfortable: turne thee vnto me accordyng vnto the multitude of thy mercies. | Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me. | Answer me, LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. |
(69:16) And hyde not thy face from thy seruaunt, for I am in trouble: O haste thee and heare me. | Hide not your face from your servant, for I am in distress; make haste to answer me. | Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble. |
(69:17) Draw nigh vnto my soule & redeeme it: for myne enemies sake oh redeeme me. | Draw near to my soul, redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies! | Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes. |
(69:18) Thou hast knowen my reproofe, my shame, and my dishonour: myne aduersaries are all in thy syght. | You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you. | You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you. |
(69:19) Reproofe hath broke my heart a peeces, I am full of heauinesse: I loked for some to haue pitie on me, but there was none, and for some that shoulde comfort me, but I coulde fynde none. | Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. | Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. |
(69:20) They gaue me for meate, gall to eate: and when I was thirstie, they gaue me vineger to drynke. | They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. | They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst. |
(69:21) Let their table be as a snare before them: and in steade of aboundaunce of peace, let it be a meanes of destruction. | Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap. | May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap. |
(69:22) Let their eyes be blynded that they see not: and euer bowe downe their loynes. | Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually. | May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. |
(69:23) Powre out thine indignation vpon them: and let thy wrathfull displeasure take holde of them. | Pour out your indignation upon them, and let your burning anger overtake them. | Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them. |
(69:24) Let their habitation be desolate: and let no man dwell in their tabernacles. | May their camp be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents. | May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. |
(69:25) For they persecute hym whom thou hast smitten: and they talke of the griefe of them whom thou hast wounded. | For they persecute him whom you have struck down, and they recount the pain of those you have wounded. | For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. |
(69:26) Let them fall from one wickednesse to another: and let them not enter into thy ryghteousnesse. | Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you. | Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation. |
(69:27) Let them be wyped out of the booke of the lyuyng: and not to be written among the ryghteous. | Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous. | May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous. |
(69:28) As for me I am afflicted and in heauinesse: thy sauing helpe O Lorde shal defende me. | But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high! | But as for me, afflicted and in pain— may your salvation, God, protect me. |
(69:29) I wyll prayse the name of the Lorde with a song: and magnifie hym with a solemne confession. | I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. | I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. |
(69:30) And it wyll please God: better then a bullocke that hath hornes and hoofes. | This will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. | This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves. |
(69:31) The humble wyll consider this and be glad, such as seke after God: and your soule shall lyue. | When the humble see it they will be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive. | The poor will see and be glad— you who seek God, may your hearts live! |
(69:32) For God heareth the poore: & dispiseth not his prisoners. | For the LORD hears the needy and does not despise his own people who are prisoners. | The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people. |
(69:33) Let heauen and earth prayse hym: the sea and all that moueth therin. | Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them. | Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them, |
(69:34) For the Lorde wyll saue Sion, and builde the cities of Iehuda: that men may dwel there and haue it in possession. | For God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah, and people shall dwell there and possess it; | for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it; |
(69:35) The posteritie also of his seruauntes shall inherite it: and they that loue his name shall dwell therin. | the offspring of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall dwell in it. | the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there. |
