My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help? My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? For the director of music. To the tune of “The Doe of the Morning.” A psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?
Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief. O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.
Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises.
Our ancestors trusted in you, and you rescued them. In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them.
They cried out to you and were saved. They trusted in you and were never disgraced. To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
But I am a worm and not a man. I am scorned and despised by all! But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people.
Everyone who sees me mocks me. They sneer and shake their heads, saying, All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads.
“Is this the one who relies on the LORD? Then let the LORD save him! If the LORD loves him so much, let the LORD rescue him!” “He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!” “He trusts in the LORD,” they say, “let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.”
Yet you brought me safely from my mother’s womb and led me to trust you at my mother’s breast. Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts. Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.
I was thrust into your arms at my birth. You have been my God from the moment I was born. On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God. From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
Do not stay so far from me, for trouble is near, and no one else can help me. Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help.
My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls; fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in! Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
Like lions they open their jaws against me, roaring and tearing into their prey. they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me.
My life is poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, melting within me. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me.
My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You have laid me in the dust and left me for dead. my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.
My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet. For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet.
I can count all my bones. My enemies stare at me and gloat. I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me.
They divide my garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing. they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.
O LORD, do not stay far away! You are my strength; come quickly to my aid! But you, O LORD, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid! But you, LORD, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me.
Save me from the sword; spare my precious life from these dogs. Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog! Deliver me from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs.
Snatch me from the lion’s jaws and from the horns of these wild oxen. Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen! Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen.
I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people. I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you.
Praise the LORD, all you who fear him! Honor him, all you descendants of Jacob! Show him reverence, all you descendants of Israel! You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
For he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy. He has not turned his back on them, but has listened to their cries for help. For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him. For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.
I will praise you in the great assembly. I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who worship you. From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him. From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows.
The poor will eat and be satisfied. All who seek the LORD will praise him. Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy. The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD! May your hearts live forever! The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him— may your hearts live forever!
The whole earth will acknowledge the LORD and return to him. All the families of the nations will bow down before him. All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him,
For royal power belongs to the LORD. He rules all the nations. For kingship belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations. for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations.
Let the rich of the earth feast and worship. Bow before him, all who are mortal, all whose lives will end as dust. All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive. All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him— those who cannot keep themselves alive.
Our children will also serve him. Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord. Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord.
His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born. They will hear about everything he has done. they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it. They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it!
