1	All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.	Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night.	That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.
2	All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness!	And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!	All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness!
3	Why does Yahweh bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be captured or killed! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?”	Why is the LORD bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?”	Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?”
4	They said to one another, “Let’s choose a leader, and let’s return into Egypt.”	And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”	And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”
5	Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.	Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel.	Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there.
6	Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes. 8	If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land which flows with milk and honey.	If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey.	If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us.
9	Only don’t rebel against Yahweh, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us. Their defense is removed from over them, and Yahweh is with us. Don’t fear them.”	Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them.”	Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them.”
10	But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. Yahweh’s glory appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.	Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.	But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites.
11	Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?	And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them?	The LORD said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them?
12	I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”	I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”	I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they.”
13	Moses said to Yahweh, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them.	But Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them,	Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.
14	They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are among this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.	and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O LORD, are in the midst of this people. For you, O LORD, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.	And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, LORD, are with these people and that you, LORD, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
15	Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,	Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say,	If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say,
16	‘Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’	‘It is because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’	The LORD was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath, so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’
17	Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying,	And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying,	“Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared:
18	‘Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’	‘The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’	The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’
19	Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”	Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.”	In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”
20	Yahweh said, “I have pardoned according to your word;	Then the LORD said, “I have pardoned, according to your word.	The LORD replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked.
21	but in very deed—as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with Yahweh’s glory—	But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD,	Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth,
22	because all those men who have seen my glory and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;	none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice,	not one of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times—
23	surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it.	shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it.	not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it.
24	But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him I will bring into the land into which he went. His offspring shall possess it.	But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.	But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.
25	Since the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley, tomorrow turn and go into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”	Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”	Since the Amalekites and the Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.”
26	Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,	And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,	The LORD said to Moses and Aaron:
27	“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation that complain against me? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel, which they complain against me.	“How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me.	“How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.
28	Tell them, ‘As I live, says Yahweh, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so I will do to you.	Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the LORD, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you:	So tell them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say:
29	Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have complained against me,	your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me,	In this wilderness your bodies will fall—every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me.
30	surely you shall not come into the land concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.	not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.	Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
31	But I will bring in your little ones that you said should be captured or killed, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.	But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected.	As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.
32	But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.	But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.	But as for you, your bodies will fall in this wilderness.
33	Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies are consumed in the wilderness.	And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness.	Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness.
34	After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.’	According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’	For forty years—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’
35	I, Yahweh, have spoken. I will surely do this to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”	I, the LORD, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.”	I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.”
36	The men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up an evil report against the land,	And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land—	So the men Moses had sent to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble against him by spreading a bad report about it—
37	even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahweh.	the men who brought up a bad report of the land—died by plague before the LORD.	these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report about the land were struck down and died of a plague before the LORD.
38	But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.	Of those men who went to spy out the land, only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive.	Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.
39	Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.	When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly.	When Moses reported this to all the Israelites, they mourned bitterly.
40	They rose up early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised; for we have sinned.”	And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, “Here we are. We will go up to the place that the LORD has promised, for we have sinned.”	Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country, saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the LORD promised. Surely we have sinned!”
41	Moses said, “Why now do you disobey the commandment of Yahweh, since it shall not prosper?	But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the LORD, when that will not succeed?	But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the LORD’s command? This will not succeed!
42	Don’t go up, for Yahweh isn’t among you; that way you won’t be struck down before your enemies.	Do not go up, for the LORD is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies.	Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,
43	For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you will fall by the sword because you turned back from following Yahweh; therefore Yahweh will not be with you.”	For there the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the LORD, the LORD will not be with you.”	for the Amalekites and the Canaanites will face you there. Because you have turned away from the LORD, he will not be with you and you will fall by the sword.”
44	But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain. Nevertheless, the ark of Yahweh’s covenant and Moses didn’t depart out of the camp.	But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed out of the camp.	Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the LORD’s covenant moved from the camp.
45	Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down even to Hormah.	Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them and pursued them, even to Hormah.	Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.
