When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and when He was seated, His disciples came to Him. | Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. | Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, |
Then He began to teach them, saying, | And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: | and he began to teach them. He said: |
“Blessed [spiritually prosperous, happy, to be admired] are the poor in spirit [those devoid of spiritual arrogance, those who regard themselves as insignificant], for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever]. | “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. | “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. |
“Blessed [forgiven, refreshed by God’s grace] are those who mourn [over their sins and repent], for they will be comforted [when the burden of sin is lifted]. | “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. | Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. |
“Blessed [inwardly peaceful, spiritually secure, worthy of respect] are the gentle [the kind-hearted, the sweet-spirited, the self-controlled], for they will inherit the earth. | “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. | Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. |
“Blessed [joyful, nourished by God’s goodness] are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness [those who actively seek right standing with God], for they will be [completely] satisfied. | “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. | Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. |
“Blessed [content, sheltered by God’s promises] are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. | “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. | Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. |
“Blessed [anticipating God’s presence, spiritually mature] are the pure in heart [those with integrity, moral courage, and godly character], for they will see God. | “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. | Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. |
“Blessed [spiritually calm with life-joy in God’s favor] are the makers and maintainers of peace, for they will [express His character and] be called the sons of God. | “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. | Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. |
“Blessed [comforted by inner peace and God’s love] are those who are persecuted for doing that which is morally right, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever]. | “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. | Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. |
“Blessed [morally courageous and spiritually alive with life-joy in God’s goodness] are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil things against you because of [your association with] Me. | “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. | “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. |
Be glad and exceedingly joyful, for your reward in heaven is great [absolutely inexhaustible]; for in this same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. | Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. | Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. |
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its taste (purpose), how can it be made salty? It is no longer good for anything, but to be thrown out and walked on by people [when the walkways are wet and slippery]. | “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. | “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. |
“You are the light of [Christ to] the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; | “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. | “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. |
nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. | Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. | Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. |
Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and [recognize and honor and] glorify your Father who is in heaven. | In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. | In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. |
“Do not think that I came to do away with or undo the Law [of Moses] or the [writings of the] Prophets; I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. | “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. | “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. |
For I assure you and most solemnly say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke [of the pen] will pass from the Law until all things [which it foreshadows] are accomplished. | For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. | For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. |
So whoever breaks one of the least [important] of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least [important] in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever practices and teaches them, he will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. | Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. | Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. |
“For I say to you that unless your righteousness (uprightness, moral essence) is more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. | For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. | For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. |
“You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘YOU SHALL NOT MURDER,’ and ‘Whoever murders shall be guilty before the court.’ | “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ | “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ |
But I say to you that everyone who continues to be angry with his brother or harbors malice against him shall be guilty before the court; and whoever speaks [contemptuously and insultingly] to his brother, ‘Raca (You empty-headed idiot)!’ shall be guilty before the supreme court (Sanhedrin); and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of the fiery hell. | But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. | But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell. |
So if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and while there you remember that your brother has something [such as a grievance or legitimate complaint] against you, | So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, | “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, |
leave your offering there at the altar and go. First make peace with your brother, and then come and present your offering. | leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. | leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. |
Come to terms quickly [at the earliest opportunity] with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way [to court], so that your opponent does not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you are thrown into prison. | Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. | “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. |
I assure you and most solemnly say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid the last cent. | Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. | Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. |
“You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’; | “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ | “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ |
but I say to you that everyone who [so much as] looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. | But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. | But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. |
If your right eye makes you stumble and leads you to sin, tear it out and throw it away [that is, remove yourself from the source of temptation]; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. | If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. | If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. |
If your right hand makes you stumble and leads you to sin, cut it off and throw it away [that is, remove yourself from the source of temptation]; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. | And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. | And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. |
“It has also been said, ‘WHOEVER DIVORCES HIS WIFE IS TO GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE’; | “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ | “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ |
but I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except on grounds of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who has been divorced commits adultery. | But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. | But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. |
“Again, you have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT YOU SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD [as a religious duty].’ | “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ | “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ |
But I say to you, do not make an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God; | But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, | But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; |
or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet; or by Jerusalem, for it is THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING. | or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. | or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. |
Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you are not able to make a single hair white or black. | And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. | And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. |
But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’ [a firm yes or no]; anything more than that comes from the evil one. | Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. | All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. |
“You have heard that it was said, ‘AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH [punishment that fits the offense].’ | “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ | “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ |
But I say to you, do not resist an evil person [who insults you or violates your rights]; but whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other toward him also [simply ignore insignificant insults or trivial losses and do not bother to retaliate—maintain your dignity, your self-respect, your poise]. | But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. | But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. |
If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also [for the Lord repays the offender]. | And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. | And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. |
And whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. | And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. | If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. |
Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. | Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. | Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. |
“You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR (fellow man) and hate your enemy.’ | “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ | “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ |
But I say to you, love [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for] your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, | But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, | But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, |
so that you may [show yourselves to] be the children of your Father who is in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on those who are evil and on those who are good, and makes the rain fall on the righteous [those who are morally upright] and the unrighteous [the unrepentant, those who oppose Him]. | so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. | that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. |
For if you love [only] those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do that? | For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? | If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? |
And if you greet only your brothers [wishing them God’s blessing and peace], what more [than others] are you doing? Do not even the Gentiles [who do not know the Lord] do that? | And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? | And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? |
You, therefore, will be perfect [growing into spiritual maturity both in mind and character, actively integrating godly values into your daily life], as your heavenly Father is perfect. | You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. | Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. |
