1 Then Jesus was led by the [Holy] Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 After He had gone without food for forty days and forty nights, He became hungry. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 But Jesus replied, “It is written and forever remains written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT COMES OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil took Him into the holy city [Jerusalem] and placed Him on the pinnacle (highest point) of the temple. Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.
6 And he said [mockingly] to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU [to serve, care for, protect and watch over You]’; and ‘THEY WILL LIFT YOU UP ON their HANDS, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.’” and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “’He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written and forever remains written, ‘YOU SHALL NOT TEST THE LORD YOUR GOD.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
8 Again, the devil took Him up on a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory [splendor, magnificence, and excellence] of them; Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
9 and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.” And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written and forever remains written, ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.’” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
11 Then the devil left Him; and angels came and ministered to Him [bringing Him food and serving Him]. Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
12 Now when Jesus heard that John [the Baptist] had been arrested and put in prison, He left for Galilee. Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.
13 And leaving Nazareth, He went and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the country of Zebulun and Naphtali. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali—
14 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
15 “THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI, BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, BEYOND THE JORDAN, GALILEE [in the district] OF THE GENTILES— “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING (living) IN [spiritual] DARKNESS HAVE SEEN A GREAT LIGHT, AND FOR THOSE WHO WERE SITTING (living) IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF [spiritual and moral] DEATH, UPON THEM A LIGHT HAS DAWNED.” the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent [change your inner self—your old way of thinking, regret past sins, live your life in a way that proves repentance; seek God’s purpose for your life], for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
18 As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He noticed two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
19 And He said to them, “Follow Me [as My disciples, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk], and I will make you fishers of men.” And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him [becoming His disciples, believing and trusting in Him and following His example]. Immediately they left their nets and followed him. At once they left their nets and followed him.
21 And going on [further] from there He noticed two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets; and He called them [to follow Him as His disciples]. 24 So the news about Him spread throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were sick, those suffering with various diseases and pains, those under the power of demons, and epileptics, paralytics; and He healed them. So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them.
25 Large crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and the other side of the Jordan. And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
