1 WHEN Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came to the border of Judaea, at the crossing of the Jordan. Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan.
2 And a great many people followed him, and he healed them there. And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
3 And the Pharisees came up to him and were tempting him and saying, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause? And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”
4 But he answered and said to them, Have you not read, that he who made from the beginning, made them male and female? He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’
5 And he said, Because of this, a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh. and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?
6 Henceforth they are not two, but one body; therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate. So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
7 They said to him, Why then did Moses command to give a letter of separation and then divorce her? They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”
8 He said to them, Moses, considering the hardness of your heart, gave you permission to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it was not so. He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.
9 But I say to you, Whoever leaves his wife without a charge of adultery and marries another commits adultery; and he who marries a woman thus separated commits adultery. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.” I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
10 His disciples said to him, If there is so much scandal between man and woman, it is not worthwhile to marry. The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.”
11 He said to them, This saying does not apply to every man, but to whom it is needed. But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given.
12 For there are eunuchs who were born this way from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. To him who can grasp, this is enough. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.” For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”
13 Then they brought little boys to him, that he may lay his hand on them and pray; and his disciples rebuked them. Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.
14 But Jesus said to them, Allow the little boys to come to me, and do not stop them; for the kingdom of heaven is for such as these. but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
15 And he laid his hand on them, and went away from thence. And he laid his hands on them and went away. When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
16 Then a man came up and said to him, O good Teacher, what is the best that I should do to have life eternal? And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”
17 He said to him, Why do you call me good? There is no one who is good except the one God; but if you want to enter into life, obey the commandments. And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”
18 He said to him, Which ones? And Jesus said to him, You shall not kill; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, “Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “’You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony,
19 Honor your father and your mother; and, Love your neighbor as yourself. Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’”
20 The young man said to him, I have obeyed all these from my boyhood, what do I lack? The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”
21 Jesus said to him. If you wish to be perfect, go and sell your possessions and give them to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven; then follow me. Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 When the young man heard this word, he went away sad, for he had great possessions. When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23 Jesus then said to his disciples, Truly I say to you, It is difficult for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.
24 Again I say to you, It is easier for a rope to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
25 When the disciples heard it, they were exceedingly astonished, saying, Who then can be saved? When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”
26 Jesus looked at them and said, For men this is impossible, but for God everything is possible. But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
27 Then Peter answered and said to him, Behold, we have left everything and followed you; what will we have? Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?”
28 Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, that in the new world when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, you who have come after me shall also sit on twelve chairs, and you shall judge the twelve tribes of Israel. Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 And every man who leaves houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields, for my name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.
30 But many who are first shall be last, and the last first. But many who are first will be last, and the last first. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
