1 FOR the kingdom of heaven is like a man, who is a householder, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. “For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
2 He bargained with the laborers for a penny a day, and sent them to his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
3 And he went out at the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the market place. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.
4 And he said to them, You also go to the vineyard, and I will give you what is right. And they went. and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’
5 And he went out again at the sixth and at the ninth hour, and did the same. So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. So they went. “He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.
6 And towards the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and he said to them, Why do you stand all day idle? And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’
7 They said to him, Because no man has hired us. He said to them, You also go to the vineyard, and you will receive what is right. They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ “’Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. “He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’
8 When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, Call the laborers and pay them their wages; and begin from the last ones to the first. And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’
9 When those of the eleventh hour came, they each received a penny. And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.
10 But when the first ones came, they expected to receive more; but they also got each one a penny. Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.
11 And when they received it, they murmured against the householder, And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.
12 Saying, These last ones have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal with us who have borne the weight of the day and its heat. saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’
13 He answered and said to one of them, My friend, I am not doing you an injustice; did you not bargain with me for a penny? But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius?
14 Take what is yours and go away; I wish to give to this last one the same as to you. Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.
15 Have I no right to do what I wish with mine own? Or are you jealous because I am generous? Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
16 Even so the last shall be first, and the first last; for many are called, but few are chosen. So the last will be first, and the first last.” “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
17 Now Jesus was ready to go up to Jerusalem; and he took his twelve disciples apart on the road, and he said to them, And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them,
18 Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man will be delivered to the high priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death. “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death
19 And they will deliver him to the Gentiles and they will mock him, and scourge him, and crucify him; and on the third day he will rise up. and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.” and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”
20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him, together with her sons; and she worshipped him, and requested something of him. Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.
21 He said to her, What do you wish? She said to him, Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and one at your left, in your kingdom. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” “What is it you want?” he asked. She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”
22 Jesus answered and said, You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am ready to drink, or be baptized with the baptism with which I am to be baptized? They said to him, We can. Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” “We can,” they answered.
23 He said to them, Indeed my cup you shall drink, and the baptism with which I am to be baptized, you too shall be baptized with; but to sit at my right hand and at my left, that is not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by my Father. He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”
24 When the ten heard it, they were angry at the two brothers. And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.
25 And Jesus called them and said, You know that the princes of the people are also their owners; and their officials rule over them. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.
26 Let not this be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you, let him be a minister to you; It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
27 And whoever wishes to be first among you, let him be a servant to you; and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—
28 Just as the Son of man did not come to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life as a salvation for the sake of many. even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
29 And when Jesus went out of Jericho a large crowd followed him. And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.
30 And behold, two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried aloud, saying, Have mercy upon us, O Lord, son of David. And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
31 But the people rebuked them to keep quiet; but they cried louder, saying, Our Lord, have mercy upon us, son of David. The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
32 And Jesus stopped and called them, and he said, What do you wish me to do for you? And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
33 They said to him, Our Lord, that our eyes may be opened. They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”
34 And Jesus had mercy upon them, so he touched their eyes; and immediately their eyes were opened, and they followed him. And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him. Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
