1 AND it came to pass when Jesus had ended these words, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judea, beyond Jordan. Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan.
2 And great multitudes followed him: and he healed them there. And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
3 And there came to him the Pharisees tempting him, and saying: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”
4 Who answering, said to them: Have ye not read, that he who made man from the beginning, Made them male and female? And he said: He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’
5 For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they two shall be in one flesh. and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?
6 Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder. So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
7 They say to him: Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce, and to put away? They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”
8 He saith to them: Because Moses by reason of the hardness of your heart permitted you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.
9 And I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that shall marry her that is put away, committeth adultery. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.” I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
10 His disciples say unto him: If the case of a man with his wife be so, it is not expedient to marry. The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.”
11 Who said to them: All men take not this word, but they to whom it is given. But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given.
12 For there are eunuchs, who were born so from their mother's womb: and there are eunuchs, who were made so by men: and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. He that can take, let him take it. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.” For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”
13 Then were little children presented to him, that he should impose hands upon them and pray. And the disciples rebuked them. Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.
14 But Jesus said to them: Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come to me: for the kingdom of heaven is for such. but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
15 And when he had imposed hands upon them, he departed from thence. And he laid his hands on them and went away. When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
16 And behold one came and said to him: Good master, what good shall I do that I may have life everlasting? And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”
17 Who said to him: Why asketh thou me concerning good? One is good, God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”
18 He said to him: Which? And Jesus said: Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness. He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, “Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “’You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony,
19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’”
20 The young man saith to him: All these I have kept from my youth, what is yet wanting to me? The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”
21 Jesus saith to him: If thou wilt be perfect, go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come follow me. Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad: for he had great possessions. When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23 Then Jesus said to his disciples: Amen, I say to you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.
24 And again I say to you: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
25 And when they had heard this, the disciples wondered very much, saying: Who then can be saved? When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”
26 And Jesus beholding, said to them: With men this is impossible: but with God all things are possible. But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
27 Then Peter answering, said to him: Behold we have left all things, and have followed thee: what therefore shall we have? Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?”
28 And Jesus said to them: Amen, I say to you, that you, who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, you also shall sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 And every one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.
30 And many that are first, shall be last: and the last shall be first. But many who are first will be last, and the last first. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
