1 THE kingdom of heaven is like to an householder, who went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. “For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
2 And having agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
3 And going about the third hour, he saw others standing in the market place idle. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.
4 And he said to them: Go you also into my vineyard, and I will give you what shall be just. and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’
5 And they went their way. And again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did in like manner. So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. So they went. “He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.
6 But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing, and he saith to them: Why stand you here all the day idle? And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’
7 They say to him: Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them: Go you also into my vineyard. They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ “’Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. “He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’
8 And when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward: Call the labourers and pay them their hire, beginning from the last even to the first. And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’
9 When therefore they were come, that came about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.
10 But when the first also came, they thought that they should receive more: and they also received every man a penny. Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.
11 And receiving it they murmured against the master of the house, And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.
12 Saying: These last have worked but one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, that have borne the burden of the day and the heats. saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’
13 But he answering said to one of them: Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny? But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius?
14 Take what is thine, and go thy way: I will also give to this last even as to thee. Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.
15 Or, is it not lawful for me to do what I will? is thy eye evil, because I am good? Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
16 So shall the last be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen. So the last will be first, and the first last.” “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
17 And Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart, and said to them: And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them,
18 Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death. “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death
19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked, and scourged, and crucified, and the third day he shall rise again. and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.” and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”
20 Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, adoring and asking something of him. Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.
21 Who said to her: What wilt thou? She saith to him: Say that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy kingdom. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” “What is it you want?” he asked. She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”
22 And Jesus answering, said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to him: We can. Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” “We can,” they answered.
23 He saith to them: My chalice indeed you shall drink; but to sit on my right or left hand, is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared by my Father. He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”
24 And the ten hearing it, were moved with indignation against the two brethren. And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.
25 But Jesus called them to him, and said: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that are the greater, exercise power upon them. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.
26 It shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be the greater among you, let him be your minister: It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
27 And he that will be first among you, shall be your servant. and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—
28 Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a redemption for many. even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
29 And when they went out from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.
30 And behold two blind men sitting by the way side, heard that Jesus passed by, and they cried out, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us. And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
31 And the multitude rebuked them that they should hold their peace. But they cried out the more, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us. The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
32 And Jesus stood, and called them, and said: What will ye that I do to you? And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
33 They say to him: Lord, that our eyes be opened. They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”
34 And Jesus having compassion on them, touched their eyes. And immediately they saw, and followed him. And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him. Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
