1	After He had finished teaching all these things in the hearing of the people, He went into Capernaum.	After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.	When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum.
2	Here the servant of a certain Captain, a man dear to his master, was ill and at the point of death;	Now a centurion had a servant who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him.	There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die.
3	and the Captain, hearing about Jesus, sent to Him some of the Jewish Elders, begging Him to come and restore his servant to health.	When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant.	The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.
4	And they, when they came to Jesus, earnestly entreated Him, pleading, "He deserves to have this favour granted him,	And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to have you do this for him,	When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this,
5	for he loves our nation, and at his own expense he built our synagogue for us."	for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue.”	because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.”
6	Then Jesus went with them. But when He was not far from the house, the Captain sent friends to Him with the message: "Sir, do not trouble to come. I am not worthy of having you come under my roof;	And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.	So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.
7	and therefore I did not deem myself worthy to come to you. Only speak the word, and let my young man be cured.	Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed.	That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.
8	For I too am a man obedient to authority, and have soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my slave, 'Do this or that,' and he does it."	For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”	For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9	Jesus listened to the Captain's message and was astonished at him, and He turned and said to the crowd that followed Him, "I tell you that not even in Israel have I found faith like that."	When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”	When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.”
10	And the friends who had been sent, on returning to the house, found the servant in perfect health.	And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.	Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
11	Shortly afterwards He went to a town called Nain, attended by His disciples and a great crowd of people.	Soon afterward he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him.	Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him.
12	And just as He reached the gate of the town, they happened to be bringing out for burial a dead man who was his mother's only son; and she was a widow; and a great number of the townspeople were with her.	As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her.	As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.
13	The Lord saw her, was moved with pity for her, and said to her, "Do not weep."	And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”	When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
14	Then He went close and touched the bier, and the bearers halted. "Young man," He said, "I command you, wake!"	Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”	Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”
15	The dead man sat up and began to speak; and He restored him to his mother.	And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.	The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16	All were awe-struck, and they gave glory to God--some saying, "A Prophet, a great Prophet, has risen up among us." Others said, "God has not forgotten His People."	Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!”	They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”
17	And the report of what Jesus had done spread through the whole of Judaea and in all the surrounding districts.	And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.	This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
18	John's disciples brought him an account of all these things;	The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John,	John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them,
19	so John called two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord. "Are you the Coming One?" he asked, "or is there another that we are to expect?"	calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?”	he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
20	The men came to Jesus and said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you with this question: 'Are you the Coming One, or is there another that we are to expect?'"	And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’”	When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
21	He immediately cured many of diseases, severe pain, and evil spirits, and to many who were blind He gave the gift of sight.	In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight.	At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind.
22	Then He answered the messengers, "Go and report to John what you have seen and heard. Blind men receive sight, the lame walk, lepers are purified, deaf persons hear, the dead are raised to life, the poor have the Good News proclaimed to them.	And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.	So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.
23	And blessed is every one who does not stumble and fall because of my claims."	And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”	Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
24	When John's messengers were gone, He proceeded to say to the multitude concerning John, "What did you go out into the Desert to gaze at? A reed waving in the wind?	When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?	After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?
25	But what did you go out to see? A man wearing luxurious clothes? People who are gorgeously dressed and live in luxury are found in palaces.	What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings’ courts.	If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces.
26	But what did you go out to see? A Prophet? Aye, I tell you, and far more than a Prophet.	What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.	But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
27	John is the man about whom it is written, 'See, I am sending My messenger before thy face, and he shall make ready thy way before thee.'	This is he of whom it is written, “‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’	This is the one about whom it is written: “’I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’
28	"I tell you that among all of women born there is not one greater than John. Yet one who is of lower rank in the Kingdom of God is greater than he.	I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”	I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29	And all the people, including the tax-gatherers, when they listened to him upheld the righteousness of God, by being baptized with John's baptism.	(When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John,	(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.
30	But the Pharisees and expounders of the Law have frustrated God's purpose as to their own lives, by refusing to be baptized.	but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)	But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
31	"To what then shall I compare the men of the present generation, and what do they resemble?	“To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like?	Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?
32	They are like children sitting in the public square and calling out to one another, 'We have played the flute to you, and you have not danced: we have sung dirges, and you have not shown sorrow.'	They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’	They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: “’We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’
33	For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, 'He has a demon!'	For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’	For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’
34	The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, there is a man who is overfond of eating and drinking--he is a friend of tax-gatherers and notorious sinners!'	The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’	The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’
35	But wisdom is justified by all who are truly wise."	Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.”	But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
36	Now one of the Pharisees repeatedly invited Him to a meal at his house; so He entered the house and reclined at the table.	One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table.	When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.
37	And there was a woman in the town who was a notorious sinner. Having learnt that Jesus was at table in the Pharisee's house she brought a flask of perfume,	And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment,	A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume.
38	and, standing behind close to His feet, weeping, began to wet His feet with her tears; and with her hair she wiped the tears away again, while she lovingly kissed His feet and poured the perfume over them.	and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment.	As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39	Noticing this, the Pharisee, His host, said to himself, "This man, if he were really a Prophet, would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching him--and would know that she is an immoral woman."	Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.”	When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
40	In answer to his thoughts Jesus said to him, "Simon, I have a word to say to you." "Rabbi, say on," he replied.	And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.”	Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said.
41	"There were once two men in debt to one money-lender," said Jesus; "one owed him five hundred shillings and the other fifty.	“A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.	“Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
42	But neither of them could pay anything; so he freely forgave them both. Tell me, then, which of them will love him most?"	When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?”	Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
43	"I suppose," replied Simon, "the one to whom he forgave most." "You have judged rightly," Jesus rejoined.	Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.”	Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
44	Then turning towards the woman He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house: you gave me no water for my feet; but she has made my feet wet with her tears, and then wiped the tears away with her hair.	Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.	Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
45	No kiss did you give me; but she from the moment I came in has not left off tenderly kissing my feet.	You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet.	You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet.
46	No oil did you pour even on my head; but she has poured perfume upon my feet.	You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.	You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet.
47	This is the reason why I tell you that her sins, her many sins, are forgiven--because she has loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little."	Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.”	Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
48	And He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."	And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”	Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
49	Then the other guests began to say to themselves, "Who can this man be who even forgives sins?"	Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?”	The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50	But He said to the woman, "Your faith has cured you: go, and be at peace."	And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”	Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
