1	WHEN he had finished all of these words, in the hearing of the people, Jesus entered Capernaum.	After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.	When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum.
2	Now the servant of a centurion was seriously sick, one who was very dear to him; and he was near death.	Now a centurion had a servant who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him.	There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die.
3	And when he heard about Jesus, he sent to him Jewish elders, and besought him to come and heal his servant.	When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant.	The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.
4	When they came to Jesus, they begged him earnestly, saying, He is worthy to have this done for him;	And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to have you do this for him,	When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this,
5	For he loves our people, and has even built us a synagogue.	for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue.”	because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.”
6	Jesus went with them. And when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent some of his friends to him, and said, My Lord, do not trouble yourself; for I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof;	And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.	So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.
7	That is why I was not worthy to come to you; but just say a word and my boy will be healed.	Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed.	That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.
8	For I am also a man in government service, and there are soldiers under my command; and I say to this one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it.	For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”	For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9	When Jesus heard these things, he was amazed at him, and he turned and said to the people who followed him, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith as this.	When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”	When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.”
10	So those who were sent returned to the house, and found the servant who was sick, healed.	And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.	Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
11	And it came to pass on the next day, he was going to a city called Nain; and his disciples were with him, and many people.	Soon afterward he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him.	Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him.
12	And when they came near the gate of the city, he saw a dead man being carried out, who was the only son of his mother, and his mother was a widow; and many people of the city were with her.	As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her.	As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.
13	When Jesus saw her, he had compassion on her, and said to her, Weep not.	And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”	When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
14	Then he went and touched the bier, and those who carried it stood still. And he said, Young man, I tell you, Arise.	Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”	Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”
15	And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.	And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.	The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16	And all men were seized with fear; and they praised God, saying, A great prophet is risen among us; and, God has visited his people.	Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!”	They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”
17	And this word about him went out through all Judaea, and through the country around them.	And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.	This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
18	And John’s disciples told him all these things.	The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John,	John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them,
19	So John called two of his disciples, and sent them to Jesus, and said, Are you the one who is to come? or are we to expect another one?	calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?”	he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
20	And they came to Jesus and said to him, John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, Are you the one who is to come? or are we to expect another one?	And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’”	When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
21	In that very hour, he healed a great many of their diseases and plagues, and of evil spirits; and he gave sight to many blind men.	In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight.	At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind.
22	So Jesus answered and said to them, Go and tell John everything that you have seen and heard; that the blind see, and the lame walk, and the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead rise up, and the poor are given hope.	And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.	So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.
23	And blessed is he, who does not stumble on account of me.	And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”	Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
24	When John’s disciples had gone, Jesus began to speak to the people concerning John, What did you go out to the wilderness to see? A reed which is shaken by the wind?	When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?	After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?
25	If not so, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Behold, those who wear fine clothes and live delicately are in kings’ houses.	What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings’ courts.	If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces.
26	And if not so, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet.	What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.	But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
27	This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before your face, to prepare the way before you.	This is he of whom it is written, “‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’	This is the one about whom it is written: “’I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’
28	I say to you that there is no prophet among those who are born of women, who is greater than John the Baptist; and yet even the least person in the kingdom of God is greater than he.	I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”	I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29	And all the people who heard it, even the publicans, justified themselves before God, for they were baptized with the baptism of John.	(When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John,	(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.
30	But the Pharisees and the scribes suppressed the will of God in themselves, because they were not baptized by him.	but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)	But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
31	To whom, therefore, shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?	“To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like?	Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?
32	They are like boys who sit in the street, and call to their friends and say, We have sung to you but you did not dance; and we have wailed to you and you did not weep.	They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’	They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: “’We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’
33	For John the Baptist came, neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and you say, He is insane.	For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’	For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’
34	The Son of man came, eating and drinking; and you say, Behold, a glutton and a winebibber, and a friend of publicans and sinners!	The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’	The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’
35	And yet wisdom is justified by all its works.	Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.”	But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
36	Then one of the Pharisees came and asked him to eat with him. And he entered the house of that Pharisee and reclined as a guest.	One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table.	When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.
37	Now there was in that city a woman who was a sinner; and when she knew that he was a guest in the Pharisee’s house, she took an alabaster cruse of perfume,	And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment,	A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume.
38	And she stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and she began to wet his feet with her tears, and to wipe them with the hair of her head, and she kissed his feet, and anointed them with perfume.	and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment.	As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39	When the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he reasoned in himself and said, If this man were a prophet, he would have known who she was and her reputation; for the woman who has touched him is a sinner.	Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.”	When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
40	Jesus answered and said to him, Simon, I have something to tell you. He said to him, Say it, teacher. Jesus said to him,	And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.”	Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said.
41	There were two men who were debtors to a creditor; one of them owed him five hundred pence, and the other one fifty pence.	“A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.	“Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
42	And because they had nothing to pay, he forgave them both. Which one of them will love him more?	When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?”	Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
43	Simon answered and said, I think the one to whom he forgave more. Jesus said to him, You have judged truly.	Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.”	Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
44	And he turned to the woman, and said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I entered your house, you did not give me even water for my feet; but she has wet my feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair.	Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.	Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
45	You did not kiss me; but she, since she entered, has not ceased to kiss my feet.	You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet.	You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet.
46	You did not anoint my head with oil; but she has anointed my feet with perfume.	You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.	You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet.
47	For this reason, I say to you, Her many sins are forgiven, because she loved much; but he to whom little is forgiven, loves little.	Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.”	Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
48	And he said to the woman, Your sins are forgiven.	And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”	Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
49	Then the guests began to say within themselves, Who is this man, who forgives even sins?	Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?”	The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50	Jesus said to the woman, Your faith has saved you; go in peace.	And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”	Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
