1 Behold, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule with justice. Behold, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule in justice. Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment. Behold, a king will reign righteously, And officials will rule justly. See, a king will reign in righteousness and rulers will rule with justice.
2 Each will be like a shelter from the wind, a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in a dry land, like the shadow of a great rock in an arid land. Each will be like a hiding place from the wind, a shelter from the storm, like streams of water in a dry place, like the shade of a great rock in a weary land. And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Each will be like a refuge from the wind And a shelter from the storm, Like streams of water in a dry country, Like the shade of a huge rock in an exhausted land. Each one will be like a shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land.
3 Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed, and the ears of those who hear will listen. Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed, and the ears of those who hear will give attention. And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken. Then the eyes of those who see will not be blinded, And the ears of those who hear will listen. Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed, and the ears of those who hear will listen.
4 The mind of the rash will know and understand, and the stammering tongue will speak clearly and fluently. The heart of the hasty will understand and know, and the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak distinctly. The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly. The mind of the rash will discern the truth, And the tongue of the stammerers will hurry to speak clearly. The fearful heart will know and understand, and the stammering tongue will be fluent and clear.
5 No longer will a fool be called noble, nor a scoundrel be respected. The fool will no more be called noble, nor the scoundrel said to be honorable. The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said <i>to be</i> bountiful. No longer will the fool be called noble, Or the rogue be spoken of <i>as</i> generous. No longer will the fool be called noble nor the scoundrel be highly respected.
6 For a fool speaks foolishness; his mind plots iniquity. He practices ungodliness and speaks falsely about the LORD; he leaves the hungry empty and deprives the thirsty of drink. For the fool speaks folly, and his heart is busy with iniquity, to practice ungodliness, to utter error concerning the LORD, to leave the craving of the hungry unsatisfied, and to deprive the thirsty of drink. For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. For a fool speaks nonsense, And his heart inclines toward wickedness: To practice ungodliness and to speak error against the LORD, To keep the hungry person unsatisfied And to withhold drink from the thirsty. For fools speak folly, their hearts are bent on evil: They practice ungodliness and spread error concerning the LORD; the hungry they leave empty and from the thirsty they withhold water.
7 The weapons of the scoundrel are destructive; he hatches plots to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just. As for the scoundrel—his devices are evil; he plans wicked schemes to ruin the poor with lying words, even when the plea of the needy is right. The instruments also of the churl <i>are</i> evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right. As for a rogue, his weapons are evil; He devises wicked schemes To destroy <i>the</i> poor with slander, Even though <i>the</i> needy one speaks what is right. Scoundrels use wicked methods, they make up evil schemes to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just.
8 But a noble man makes honorable plans; he stands up for worthy causes. But he who is noble plans noble things, and on noble things he stands. But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand. But the noble person devises noble plans; And by noble plans he stands. But the noble make noble plans, and by noble deeds they stand.
9 Stand up, you complacent women; listen to me. Give ear to my word, you overconfident daughters. Rise up, you women who are at ease, hear my voice; you complacent daughters, give ear to my speech. Rise up, ye women that are at ease; hear my voice, ye careless daughters; give ear unto my speech. Rise up, you women who are at ease, <i>And</i> hear my voice; Listen to my word, You complacent daughters. You women who are so complacent, rise up and listen to me; you daughters who feel secure, hear what I have to say!
10 In a little more than a year you will tremble, O secure ones. For the grape harvest will fail and the fruit harvest will not arrive. In little more than a year you will shudder, you complacent women; for the grape harvest fails, the fruit harvest will not come. Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come. Within a year and <i>a few</i> days You will be troubled, you complacent <i>daughters;</i> For the vintage is ended, <i>And</i> the <i>fruit</i> gathering will not come. In little more than a year you who feel secure will tremble; the grape harvest will fail, and the harvest of fruit will not come.
11 Shudder, you ladies of leisure; tremble, you daughters of complacency. Strip yourselves bare and put sackcloth around your waists. Tremble, you women who are at ease, shudder, you complacent ones; strip, and make yourselves bare, and tie sackcloth around your waist. Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones: strip you, and make you bare, and gird <i>sackcloth</i> upon <i>your</i> loins. Tremble, you <i>women</i> who are at ease; Be troubled, you complacent <i>daughters;</i> Strip, undress, and put <i>sackcloth</i> on <i>your</i> waist, Tremble, you complacent women; shudder, you daughters who feel secure! Strip off your fine clothes and wrap yourselves in rags.
12 Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vines, Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine, They shall lament for the teats, for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine. 13 and for the land of my people, overgrown with thorns and briers— even for every house of merriment in this city of revelry. for the soil of my people growing up in thorns and briers, yes, for all the joyous houses in the exultant city. Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns <i>and</i> briers; yea, upon all the houses of joy <i>in</i> the joyous city: For the land of my people <i>in which</i> thorns <i>and</i> briars will come up; Indeed, for all the joyful houses <i>and for</i> the jubilant city. and for the land of my people, a land overgrown with thorns and briers— yes, mourn for all houses of merriment and for this city of revelry.
14 For the palace will be forsaken, the busy city abandoned. The hill and the watchtower will become caves forever — the delight of wild donkeys and a pasture for flocks— For the palace is forsaken, the populous city deserted; the hill and the watchtower will become dens forever, a joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks; Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks; For the palace has been neglected, the populated city abandoned. Hill and watch-tower have become caves forever, A delight for wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks, The fortress will be abandoned, the noisy city deserted; citadel and watchtower will become a wasteland forever, the delight of donkeys, a pasture for flocks,
15 until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high. Then the desert will be an orchard, and the orchard will seem like a forest. until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest. Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest. Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high, And the wilderness becomes a fertile field, And the fertile field is considered as a forest. till the Spirit is poured on us from on high, and the desert becomes a fertile field, and the fertile field seems like a forest.
16 Then justice will inhabit the wilderness, and righteousness will dwell in the fertile field. Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness abide in the fruitful field. Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field. Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, And righteousness will remain in the fertile field. The LORD’s justice will dwell in the desert, his righteousness live in the fertile field.
17 The work of righteousness will be peace; the service of righteousness will be quiet confidence forever. And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. And the work of righteousness will be peace, And the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever. The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever.
18 Then my people will dwell in a peaceful place, in safe and secure places of rest. My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places. And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places; Then my people will live in a peaceful settlement, In secure dwellings, and in undisturbed resting places; My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.
19 But hail will level the forest, and the city will sink to the depths. And it will hail when the forest falls down, and the city will be utterly laid low. When it shall hail, coming down on the forest; and the city shall be low in a low place. And it will hail when the forest comes down, And the city will be utterly laid low. Though hail flattens the forest and the city is leveled completely,
20 Blessed are those who sow beside abundant waters, who let the ox and donkey range freely. Happy are you who sow beside all waters, who let the feet of the ox and the donkey range free. Blessed <i>are</i> ye that sow beside all waters, that send forth <i>thither</i> the feet of the ox and the ass. How blessed will you be, you who sow beside all waters, Who let the ox and the donkey out freely. how blessed you will be, sowing your seed by every stream, and letting your cattle and donkeys range free.
