1 In those days when the disciples were increasing in number, the Grecian Jews among them began to grumble against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Now at this time, as the disciples were increasing <i>in number,</i> a complaint developed <i>on the part of</i> the Hellenistic <i>Jews</i> against the <i>native</i> Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving <i>of food.</i> In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.
2 So the Twelve summoned all the disciples and said, “It is unacceptable for us to neglect the word of God in order to wait on tables. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples <i>unto them</i>, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.
3 Therefore, brothers, select from among you seven men confirmed to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will appoint this responsibility to them Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. Instead, brothers <i>and sisters,</i> select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them
4 and will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word. Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called <i>the synagogue</i> of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, <i>including</i> both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and some from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen. Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)—Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia—who began to argue with Stephen.
10 but they could not stand up to his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke. But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. But they were unable to cope with his wisdom and the Spirit by whom he was speaking. But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.
11 Then they prompted some men to say, “We heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God. Then they secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and <i>against</i> God. Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.”
12 So they stirred up the people, elders, and scribes and confronted Stephen. 15 All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel. And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel. And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel. And all who were sitting in the Council stared at him, and they saw his face, <i>which was</i> like the face of an angel. All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
