1	And Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets and said to him, “Gird up your loins and take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead.	Then Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets and said to him, “Tie up your garments, and take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead.	The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company of the prophets and said to him, “Tuck your cloak into your belt, take this flask of olive oil with you and go to Ramoth Gilead.
2	And you will come to there and see there Jehu son of Jehoshaphat son of Nimshi, and you will come and make him rise up from the midst of his brothers. And bring him to an inner chamber.	And when you arrive, look there for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi. And go in and have him rise from among his fellows, and lead him to an inner chamber.	When you get there, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him, get him away from his companions and take him into an inner room.
3	And take the flask of the oil, and pour it on his head and say, ‘Thus says YHWH: I have anointed you king over Israel.’ And open the door and flee, and do not delay.”	Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say, ‘Thus says the LORD, I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and flee; do not linger.”	Then take the flask and pour the oil on his head and declare, ‘This is what the LORD says: I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and run; don’t delay!”
4	And the young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead.	So the young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead.	So the young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead.
5	And he arrived, and behold, the captains of the army were sitting, and he said, “A word from me is to you, commander.” And Jehu said, “For that of all of us?” And he said, “To you, commander.”	And when he came, behold, the commanders of the army were in council. And he said, “I have a word for you, O commander.” And Jehu said, “To which of us all?” And he said, “To you, O commander.”	When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said. “For which of us?” asked Jehu. “For you, commander,” he replied.
6	And he arose and went into the house, and he poured the oil on his head and said to him, “Thus says YHWH, God of Israel: ‘I have anointed you as king over the people of YHWH, over Israel.	So he arose and went into the house. And the young man poured the oil on his head, saying to him, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, I anoint you king over the people of the LORD, over Israel.	Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil on Jehu’s head and declared, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anoint you king over the LORD’s people Israel.
7	And you shall strike the house of Ahab your master, that I may avenge the blood of My servants the prophets and the blood of all the servants of YHWH from the hand of Jezebel.	And you shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge on Jezebel the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD.	You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge the blood of my servants the prophets and the blood of all the LORD’s servants shed by Jezebel.
8	And all the house of Ahab will perish, and I will cut off from Ahab the one who urinates against the wall, and the one who is restrained, and the one who is free in Israel.	For the whole house of Ahab shall perish, and I will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel.	The whole house of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel—slave or free.
9	And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha son of Ahijah.	And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah.	I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha son of Ahijah.
10	And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and there is none to bury her.’” And he opened the door and fled.	And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and none shall bury her.” Then he opened the door and fled.	As for Jezebel, dogs will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’” Then he opened the door and ran.
11	And Jehu went out to the servants of his master, and one said to him, “Peace? Why did this madman come to you?” And he said to them, “You⁺ know the man and his babble.”	When Jehu came out to the servants of his master, they said to him, “Is all well? Why did this mad fellow come to you?” And he said to them, “You know the fellow and his talk.”	When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, “Is everything all right? Why did this maniac come to you?” “You know the man and the sort of things he says,” Jehu replied.
12	And they said, “False! Declare now to us.” And he said, “Like this and like this he spoke to me, saying, ‘Thus says YHWH: I have anointed you as king over Israel.’”	And they said, “That is not true; tell us now.” And he said, “Thus and so he spoke to me, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD, I anoint you king over Israel.’”	“That’s not true!” they said. “Tell us.” Jehu said, “Here is what he told me: ‘This is what the LORD says: I anoint you king over Israel.’”
13	And they hurried, and each man took his garment and put it under him on the top of the steps, and they blew with the shofar and said, “Jehu is king.”	Then in haste every man of them took his garment and put it under him on the bare steps, and they blew the trumpet and proclaimed, “Jehu is king.”	They quickly took their cloaks and spread them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet and shouted, “Jehu is king!”
14	And Jehu son of Jehoshaphat son of Nimshi conspired against Jehoram. (And Jehoram had been defending Ramoth-gilead, he and all Israel, from the presence of Hazael king of Aram.	Thus Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram. (Now Joram with all Israel had been on guard at Ramoth-gilead against Hazael king of Syria,	So Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram. (Now Joram and all Israel had been defending Ramoth Gilead against Hazael king of Aram,
15	And king Jehoram had returned to recover in Jezreel from the wounds that the Aramaeans had inflicted on him when he fought with Hazael king of Aram.) And Jehu said, “If it is your⁺ mind, do not let a fugitive go out from the city to go and tell it in Jezreel.”	but King Joram had returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds that the Syrians had given him, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) So Jehu said, “If this is your decision, then let no one slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel.”	but King Joram had returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him in the battle with Hazael king of Aram.) Jehu said, “If you desire to make me king, don’t let anyone slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel.”
16	And Jehu rode in a chariot and went to Jezreel, because Jehoram was laid up there. And Ahaziah king of Judah had come down to see Jehoram.	Then Jehu mounted his chariot and went to Jezreel, for Joram lay there. And Ahaziah king of Judah had come down to visit Joram.	Then he got into his chariot and rode to Jezreel, because Joram was resting there and Ahaziah king of Judah had gone down to see him.
17	And the watchman stood on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw the company of Jehu in his coming, and said, “A company I see.” And Jehoram said, “Take a rider and send him to meet them, and let him say, ‘Is it peace?’”	Now the watchman was standing on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw the company of Jehu as he came and said, “I see a company.” And Joram said, “Take a horseman and send to meet them, and let him say, ‘Is it peace?’”	When the lookout standing on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu’s troops approaching, he called out, “I see some troops coming.” “Get a horseman,” Joram ordered. “Send him to meet them and ask, ‘Do you come in peace?’”
18	And the rider on the horse went to meet him and said, “Thus says the king, ‘Is it peace?’” And Jehu said, “And what is for you regarding peace? Turn around to after me.” And the watchman declared, saying, “The messenger went to them, and he is not coming back.”	So a man on horseback went to meet him and said, “Thus says the king, ‘Is it peace?’” And Jehu said, “What do you have to do with peace? Turn around and ride behind me.” And the watchman reported, saying, “The messenger reached them, but he is not coming back.”	The horseman rode off to meet Jehu and said, “This is what the king says: ‘Do you come in peace?’” “What do you have to do with peace?” Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.” The lookout reported, “The messenger has reached them, but he isn’t coming back.”
19	And he sent out a second rider on a horse, and he went in to them and said, “Thus says the king, ‘Is peace?’” And Jehu answered, “And what to you with peace? Turn around to behind me.”	Then he sent out a second horseman, who came to them and said, “Thus the king has said, ‘Is it peace?’” And Jehu answered, “What do you have to do with peace? Turn around and ride behind me.”	So the king sent out a second horseman. When he came to them he said, “This is what the king says: ‘Do you come in peace?’” Jehu replied, “What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me.”
20	And the watchman declared, saying, “He went up even to them and is not coming back. And the driving is like the driving of Jehu son of Nimshi, for he drives with madness!”	Again the watchman reported, “He reached them, but he is not coming back. And the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi, for he drives furiously.”	The lookout reported, “He has reached them, but he isn’t coming back either. The driving is like that of Jehu son of Nimshi—he drives like a maniac.”
21	And Jehoram said, “Harness!” And his chariot was harnessed. And Jehoram king of Israel went out, and Ahaziah king of Judah, each man in his chariot, and they went out to meet Jehu and they found him in the portion of Naboth the Jezreelite.	Joram said, “Make ready.” And they made ready his chariot. Then Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah set out, each in his chariot, and went to meet Jehu, and met him at the property of Naboth the Jezreelite.	“Hitch up my chariot,” Joram ordered. And when it was hitched up, Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah rode out, each in his own chariot, to meet Jehu. They met him at the plot of ground that had belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite.
22	And it came to pass, when Jehoram saw Jehu, that he said, “Is it peace, Jehu?” And he said, “What peace is, during the prostitution of Jezebel your mother and her many witchcrafts?”	And when Joram saw Jehu, he said, “Is it peace, Jehu?” He answered, “What peace can there be, so long as the whorings and the sorceries of your mother Jezebel are so many?”	When Joram saw Jehu he asked, “Have you come in peace, Jehu?” “How can there be peace,” Jehu replied, “as long as all the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel abound?”
23	And Jehoram turned his hands and fled, and he said to Ahaziah, “Treachery, Ahaziah.”	Then Joram reined about and fled, saying to Ahaziah, “Treachery, O Ahaziah!”	Joram turned about and fled, calling out to Ahaziah, “Treachery, Ahaziah!”
24	And Jehu filled his hand with a bow and struck Jehoram between his arms, and the arrow came out from his heart, and he sank down in his chariot.	And Jehu drew his bow with his full strength, and shot Joram between the shoulders, so that the arrow pierced his heart, and he sank in his chariot.	Then Jehu drew his bow and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow pierced his heart and he slumped down in his chariot.
25	And he said to Bidkar his captain, “Lift up and throw him into the portion of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite, for remember that I and you were riding together behind Ahab his father, and YHWH lifted up upon him this burden:	Jehu said to Bidkar his aide, “Take him up and throw him on the plot of ground belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. For remember, when you and I rode side by side behind Ahab his father, how the LORD made this pronouncement against him:	Jehu said to Bidkar, his chariot officer, “Pick him up and throw him on the field that belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite. Remember how you and I were riding together in chariots behind Ahab his father when the LORD spoke this prophecy against him:
26	‘If not the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons I saw yesterday, declares YHWH, and I will repay to you in this portion, declares YHWH.’ And now take and throw him into the portion, according to the word of YHWH.”	‘As surely as I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons—declares the LORD—I will repay you on this plot of ground.’ Now therefore take him up and throw him on the plot of ground, in accordance with the word of the LORD.”	Yesterday I saw the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons, declares the LORD, and I will surely make you pay for it on this plot of ground, declares the LORD.’ Now then, pick him up and throw him on that plot, in accordance with the word of the LORD.”
27	And Ahaziah king of Judah saw, and he fled up the road toward Beth-haggan, and Jehu pursued him and said, “Shoot him also.” So they shot Ahaziah in the chariot on the Ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo and died there.	When Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled in the direction of Beth-haggan. And Jehu pursued him and said, “Shoot him also.” And they shot him in the chariot at the ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo and died there.	When Ahaziah king of Judah saw what had happened, he fled up the road to Beth Haggan. Jehu chased him, shouting, “Kill him too!” They wounded him in his chariot on the way up to Gur near Ibleam, but he escaped to Megiddo and died there.
28	And his servants carried him in the chariot to Jerusalem, and they buried him in his tomb with his fathers in the City of David.	His servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his tomb with his fathers in the city of David.	His servants took him by chariot to Jerusalem and buried him with his ancestors in his tomb in the City of David.
29	(And in the eleventh year of Jehoram son of Ahab, Ahaziah had become king over Judah.)	In the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab, Ahaziah began to reign over Judah.	(In the eleventh year of Joram son of Ahab, Ahaziah had become king of Judah.)
30	And Jehu had come to Jezreel, and Jezebel heard and put her eyes in paint and adorned her head, and she looked down through the window.	When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it. And she painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out of the window.	Then Jehu went to Jezreel. When Jezebel heard about it, she put on eye makeup, arranged her hair and looked out of a window.
31	And Jehu entered into the gate, and she said, “Is it peace, O Zimri, manslayer of his master?”	And as Jehu entered the gate, she said, “Is it peace, you Zimri, murderer of your master?”	As Jehu entered the gate, she asked, “Have you come in peace, you Zimri, you murderer of your master?”
32	And he lifted up his face to the window and said, “Who is is with me? Who?” And two or three eunuchs looked out at him.	And he lifted up his face to the window and said, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked out at him.	He looked up at the window and called out, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked down at him.
33	And he said, “Drop her!” And they dropped her, and her blood splattered on the wall and on the horses, and he trampled her underfoot.	He said, “Throw her down.” So they threw her down. And some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses, and they trampled on her.	“Throw her down!” Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot.
34	And he came in and ate and drank and said, “Look after now this accursed woman and bury her, for she was a daughter of a king.”	Then he went in and ate and drank. And he said, “See now to this cursed woman and bury her, for she is a king’s daughter.”	Jehu went in and ate and drank. “Take care of that cursed woman,” he said, “and bury her, for she was a king’s daughter.”
35	And they went to bury her, and no more they found of her but if the skull and the feet and the palms of the hands.	But when they went to bury her, they found no more of her than the skull and the feet and the palms of her hands.	But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands.
36	And they turned back and reported to him, and he said, “The word of YHWH it is, which He spoke by His servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, ‘In the portion of Jezreel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel.	When they came back and told him, he said, “This is the word of the LORD, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite: ‘In the territory of Jezreel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel,	They went back and told Jehu, who said, “This is the word of the LORD that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs will devour Jezebel’s flesh.
37	And the corpse of Jezebel shall be as dung on the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel, so that they cannot say: This is Jezebel.’”	and the corpse of Jezebel shall be as dung on the face of the field in the territory of Jezreel, so that no one can say, This is Jezebel.’”	Jezebel’s body will be like dung on the ground in the plot at Jezreel, so that no one will be able to say, ‘This is Jezebel.’”
