1 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
2 I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions, just as I handed them on to you. A. Women’s Headdresses Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you.
3 But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and a husband the head of his wife, and God the head of Christ. But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
4 Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered brings shame upon his head. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.
5 But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled brings shame upon her head, for it is one and the same thing as if she had had her head shaved. but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.
6 For if a woman does not have her head veiled, she may as well have her hair cut off. But if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should wear a veil. For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.
7 A man, on the other hand, should not cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.
8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;
9 nor was man created for woman, but woman for man; Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
10 for this reason a woman should have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels. That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels.
11 Woman is not independent of man or man of woman in the Lord. Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
12 For just as woman came from man, so man is born of woman; but all things are from God. for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head unveiled? Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered? Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears his hair long it is a disgrace to him, Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,
15 whereas if a woman has long hair it is her glory, because long hair has been given [her] for a covering? but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
16 But if anyone is inclined to be argumentative, we do not have such a custom, nor do the churches of God. B. The Lord’s Supper If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God. If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God.
17 In giving this instruction, I do not praise the fact that your meetings are doing more harm than good. But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good.
18 First of all, I hear that when you meet as a church there are divisions among you, and to a degree I believe it; For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part, In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it.
19 there have to be factions among you in order that [also] those who are approved among you may become known. for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval.
20 When you meet in one place, then, it is not to eat the Lord’s supper, When you come together, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat. So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat,
21 for in eating, each one goes ahead with his own supper, and one goes hungry while another gets drunk. For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk. for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk.
22 Do you not have houses in which you can eat and drink? Or do you show contempt for the church of God and make those who have nothing feel ashamed? What can I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this matter I do not praise you. What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not. Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter!
23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,
24 and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
25 In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
28 A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.
29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.
30 That is why many among you are ill and infirm, and a considerable number are dying. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
31 If we discerned ourselves, we would not be under judgment; But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.
32 but since we are judged by [the] Lord, we are being disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world. Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.
33 Therefore, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another— So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together.
34 If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that your meetings may not result in judgment. The other matters I shall set in order when I come. if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home—so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things I will give directions when I come. Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
