When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went down to the region of Judea east of the Jordan River.1When Jesus had finished these words, He departed from Galilee and came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan;
Large crowds followed him there, and he healed their sick.2and large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there.
Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?”3Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?"
“Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male and female.’ ”4And He answered and said, "Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,
And he said, “‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’5and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH '?
Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”6"So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."
“Then why did Moses say in the law that a man could give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away?” they asked.7They said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY?"
Jesus replied, “Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to your hard hearts, but it was not what God had originally intended.8He said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way.
And I tell you this, whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery—unless his wife has been unfaithful. ”9"And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery."
Jesus’ disciples then said to him, “If this is the case, it is better not to marry!”10The disciples said to Him, "If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry."
“Not everyone can accept this statement,” Jesus said. “Only those whom God helps.11But He said to them, "Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given.
Some are born as eunuchs, some have been made eunuchs by others, and some choose not to marry for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.” Jesus Blesses the Children12"For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it."
One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could lay his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him.13Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them.
But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.”14But Jesus said, "Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
And he placed his hands on their heads and blessed them before he left. The Rich Man15After laying His hands on them, He departed from there.
Someone came to Jesus with this question: “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?”16And someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?"
“Why ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. But to answer your question—if you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments.”17And He said to him, "Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."
“Which ones?” the man asked. And Jesus replied: “‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely.18Then he said to Him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS;
Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”19HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."
“I’ve obeyed all these commandments,” the young man replied. “What else must I do?”20The young man said to Him, "All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?"
Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”21Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."
But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.22But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is very hard for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.23And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
I’ll say it again—it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”24"Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked.25When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, "Then who can be saved?"
Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.”26And looking at them Jesus said to them, "With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
Then Peter said to him, “We’ve given up everything to follow you. What will we get?”27Then Peter said to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?"
Jesus replied, “I assure you that when the world is made new and the Son of Man sits upon his glorious throne, you who have been my followers will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.28And Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property, for my sake, will receive a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life.29"And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.
But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.30"But many who are first will be last; and the last, first.
