| 1And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ. | 1Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. |
| 2I am so glad that you always keep me in your thoughts, and that you are following the teachings I passed on to you. | 2Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you. |
| 3But there is one thing I want you to know: The head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. | 3But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. |
| 4A man dishonors his head if he covers his head while praying or prophesying. | 4Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. |
| 5But a woman dishonors her head if she prays or prophesies without a covering on her head, for this is the same as shaving her head. | 5But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved. |
| 6Yes, if she refuses to wear a head covering, she should cut off all her hair! But since it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or her head shaved, she should wear a covering. | 6For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head. |
| 7A man should not wear anything on his head when worshiping, for man is made in God's image and reflects God's glory. And woman reflects man's glory. | 7For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. |
| 8For the first man didn't come from woman, but the first woman came from man. | 8For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; |
| 9And man was not made for woman, but woman was made for man. | 9for indeed man was not created for the woman's sake, but woman for the man's sake. |
| 10For this reason, and because the angels are watching, a woman should wear a covering on her head to show she is under authority. | 10Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. |
| 11But among the Lord's people, women are not independent of men, and men are not independent of women. | 11However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. |
| 12For although the first woman came from man, every other man was born from a woman, and everything comes from God. | 12For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God. |
| 13Judge for yourselves. Is it right for a woman to pray to God in public without covering her head? | 13Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? |
| 14Isn't it obvious that it's disgraceful for a man to have long hair? | 14Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, |
| 15And isn't long hair a woman's pride and joy? For it has been given to her as a covering. | 15but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering. |
| 16But if anyone wants to argue about this, I simply say that we have no other custom than this, and neither do God's other churches. | 16But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God. |
| 17But in the following instructions, I cannot praise you. For it sounds as if more harm than good is done when you meet together. | 17But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse. |
| 18First, I hear that there are divisions among you when you meet as a church, and to some extent I believe it. | 18For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. |
| 19But, of course, there must be divisions among you so that you who have God's approval will be recognized! | 19For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you. |
| 20When you meet together, you are not really interested in the Lord's Supper. | 20Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper, |
| 21For some of you hurry to eat your own meal without sharing with others. As a result, some go hungry while others get drunk. | 21for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk. |
| 22What? Don't you have your own homes for eating and drinking? Or do you really want to disgrace God's church and shame the poor? What am I supposed to say? Do you want me to praise you? Well, I certainly will not praise you for this! | 22What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I will not praise you. |
| 23For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread | 23For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; |
| 24and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me." | 24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." |
| 25In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant between God and his people--an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me as often as you drink it." | 25In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." |
| 26For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord's death until he comes again. | 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. |
| 27So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. | 27Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. |
| 28That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. | 28But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. |
| 29For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God's judgment upon yourself. | 29For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. |
| 30That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died. | 30For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. |
| 31But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way. | 31But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. |
| 32Yet when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned along with the world. | 32But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world. |
| 33So, my dear brothers and sisters, when you gather for the Lord's Supper, wait for each other. | 33So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. |
| 34If you are really hungry, eat at home so you won't bring judgment upon yourselves when you meet together. I'll give you instructions about the other matters after I arrive. | 34If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you will not come together for judgment. The remaining matters I will arrange when I come. |
