New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
After this, Jesus traveled around Galilee. He wanted to stay out of Judea, where the Jewish leaders were plotting his death.1After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.
But soon it was time for the Jewish Festival of Shelters,2Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand.
and Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, where your followers can see your miracles!3So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.
You can’t become famous if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!”4For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”
For even his brothers didn’t believe in him.5For not even his brothers believed in him.
Jesus replied, “Now is not the right time for me to go, but you can go anytime.6Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.
The world can’t hate you, but it does hate me because I accuse it of doing evil.7The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.
You go on. I’m not going to this festival, because my time has not yet come.”8You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.”
After saying these things, Jesus remained in Galilee. Jesus Teaches Openly at the Temple9After saying this, he remained in Galilee.
But after his brothers left for the festival, Jesus also went, though secretly, staying out of public view.10But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.
The Jewish leaders tried to find him at the festival and kept asking if anyone had seen him.11The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?”
There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some argued, “He’s a good man,” but others said, “He’s nothing but a fraud who deceives the people.”12And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.”
But no one had the courage to speak favorably about him in public, for they were afraid of getting in trouble with the Jewish leaders.13Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.
Then, midway through the festival, Jesus went up to the Temple and began to teach.14About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.
The people were surprised when they heard him. “How does he know so much when he hasn’t been trained?” they asked.15The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?”
So Jesus told them, “My message is not my own; it comes from God who sent me.16So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.
Anyone who wants to do the will of God will know whether my teaching is from God or is merely my own.17If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.
Those who speak for themselves want glory only for themselves, but a person who seeks to honor the one who sent him speaks truth, not lies.18The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.
Moses gave you the law, but none of you obeys it! In fact, you are trying to kill me.”19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”
The crowd replied, “You’re demon possessed! Who’s trying to kill you?”20The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?”
Jesus replied, “I did one miracle on the Sabbath, and you were amazed.21Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it.
But you work on the Sabbath, too, when you obey Moses’ law of circumcision. (Actually, this tradition of circumcision began with the patriarchs, long before the law of Moses.)22Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
For if the correct time for circumcising your son falls on the Sabbath, you go ahead and do it so as not to break the law of Moses. So why should you be angry with me for healing a man on the Sabbath?23If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well?
Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.” Is Jesus the Messiah?24Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”
Some of the people who lived in Jerusalem started to ask each other, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?25Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?
But here he is, speaking in public, and they say nothing to him. Could our leaders possibly believe that he is the Messiah?26And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ?
But how could he be? For we know where this man comes from. When the Messiah comes, he will simply appear; no one will know where he comes from.”27But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.”
While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he called out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I come from. But I’m not here on my own. The one who sent me is true, and you don’t know him.28So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know.
But I know him because I come from him, and he sent me to you.”29I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.”
Then the leaders tried to arrest him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.30So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
Many among the crowds at the Temple believed in him. “After all,” they said, “would you expect the Messiah to do more miraculous signs than this man has done?”31Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”
When the Pharisees heard that the crowds were whispering such things, they and the leading priests sent Temple guards to arrest Jesus.32The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.
But Jesus told them, “I will be with you only a little longer. Then I will return to the one who sent me.33Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me.
You will search for me but not find me. And you cannot go where I am going.”34You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.”
The Jewish leaders were puzzled by this statement. “Where is he planning to go?” they asked. “Is he thinking of leaving the country and going to the Jews in other lands? Maybe he will even teach the Greeks!35The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?
What does he mean when he says, ‘You will search for me but not find me,’ and ‘You cannot go where I am going’?” Jesus Promises Living Water36What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”
On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!37On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”38Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
(When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.) Division and Unbelief39Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
When the crowds heard him say this, some of them declared, “Surely this man is the Prophet we’ve been expecting.”40When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.”
Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others said, “But he can’t be! Will the Messiah come from Galilee?41Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee?
For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born.”42Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”
So the crowd was divided about him.43So there was a division among the people over him.
Some even wanted him arrested, but no one laid a hand on him.44Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
When the Temple guards returned without having arrested Jesus, the leading priests and Pharisees demanded, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”45The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?”
“We have never heard anyone speak like this!” the guards responded.46The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”
“Have you been led astray, too?” the Pharisees mocked.47The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?
“Is there a single one of us rulers or Pharisees who believes in him?48Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?
This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the law. God’s curse is on them!”49But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”
Then Nicodemus, the leader who had met with Jesus earlier, spoke up.50Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them,
“Is it legal to convict a man before he is given a hearing?” he asked.51“Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”
They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Search the Scriptures and see for yourself—no prophet ever comes from Galilee!” ---------- [ The most ancient Greek manuscripts do not include John 7:53–8:11. ]52They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”
Then the meeting broke up, and everybody went home.53[[They went each to his own house,
