After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him.1After this, Jesus traveled around Galilee. He wanted to stay out of Judea, where the Jewish leaders were plotting his death.
Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand.2But soon it was time for the Jewish Festival of Shelters,
His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing.3and Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, where your followers can see your miracles!
For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”4You can’t become famous if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!”
For even His brothers did not believe in Him.5For even his brothers didn’t believe in him.
Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.6Jesus replied, “Now is not the right time for me to go, but you can go anytime.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil.7 The world can’t hate you, but it does hate me because I accuse it of doing evil.
You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.”8 You go on. I’m not going to this festival, because my time has not yet come.”
When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.9After saying these things, Jesus remained in Galilee. Jesus Teaches Openly at the Temple
But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.10But after his brothers left for the festival, Jesus also went, though secretly, staying out of public view.
Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?”11The Jewish leaders tried to find him at the festival and kept asking if anyone had seen him.
And there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.”12There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some argued, “He’s a good man,” but others said, “He’s nothing but a fraud who deceives the people.”
However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.13But no one had the courage to speak favorably about him in public, for they were afraid of getting in trouble with the Jewish leaders.
Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught.14Then, midway through the festival, Jesus went up to the Temple and began to teach.
And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”15The people were surprised when they heard him. “How does he know so much when he hasn’t been trained?” they asked.
Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.16So Jesus told them, “My message is not my own; it comes from God who sent me.
If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.17 Anyone who wants to do the will of God will know whether my teaching is from God or is merely my own.
He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.18 Those who speak for themselves want glory only for themselves, but a person who seeks to honor the one who sent him speaks truth, not lies.
Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?”19 Moses gave you the law, but none of you obeys it! In fact, you are trying to kill me.”
The people answered and said, “You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?”20The crowd replied, “You’re demon possessed! Who’s trying to kill you?”
Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel.21Jesus replied, “I did one miracle on the Sabbath, and you were amazed.
Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.22 But you work on the Sabbath, too, when you obey Moses’ law of circumcision. (Actually, this tradition of circumcision began with the patriarchs, long before the law of Moses.)
If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?23 For if the correct time for circumcising your son falls on the Sabbath, you go ahead and do it so as not to break the law of Moses. So why should you be angry with me for healing a man on the Sabbath?
Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”24 Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.” Is Jesus the Messiah?
Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to kill?25Some of the people who lived in Jerusalem started to ask each other, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Christ?26But here he is, speaking in public, and they say nothing to him. Could our leaders possibly believe that he is the Messiah?
However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.”27But how could he be? For we know where this man comes from. When the Messiah comes, he will simply appear; no one will know where he comes from.”
Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, “You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.28While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he called out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I come from. But I’m not here on my own. The one who sent me is true, and you don’t know him.
But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.”29 But I know him because I come from him, and he sent me to you.”
Therefore they sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.30Then the leaders tried to arrest him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.
And many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?”31Many among the crowds at the Temple believed in him. “After all,” they said, “would you expect the Messiah to do more miraculous signs than this man has done?”
The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him.32When the Pharisees heard that the crowds were whispering such things, they and the leading priests sent Temple guards to arrest Jesus.
Then Jesus said to them, “I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I go to Him who sent Me.33But Jesus told them, “I will be with you only a little longer. Then I will return to the one who sent me.
You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come.”34 You will search for me but not find me. And you cannot go where I am going.”
Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?35The Jewish leaders were puzzled by this statement. “Where is he planning to go?” they asked. “Is he thinking of leaving the country and going to the Jews in other lands? Maybe he will even teach the Greeks!
What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?”36What does he mean when he says, ‘You will search for me but not find me,’ and ‘You cannot go where I am going’?” Jesus Promises Living Water
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.37On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”
But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.39(When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.) Division and Unbelief
Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.”40When the crowds heard him say this, some of them declared, “Surely this man is the Prophet we’ve been expecting.”
Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee?41Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others said, “But he can’t be! Will the Messiah come from Galilee?
Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”42For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born.”
So there was a division among the people because of Him.43So the crowd was divided about him.
Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.44Some even wanted him arrested, but no one laid a hand on him.
Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”45When the Temple guards returned without having arrested Jesus, the leading priests and Pharisees demanded, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!”46“We have never heard anyone speak like this!” the guards responded.
Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived?47“Have you been led astray, too?” the Pharisees mocked.
Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?48“Is there a single one of us rulers or Pharisees who believes in him?
But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”49This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the law. God’s curse is on them!”
Nicodemus (he who came to Jesus by night, being one of them) said to them,50Then Nicodemus, the leader who had met with Jesus earlier, spoke up.
“Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”51“Is it legal to convict a man before he is given a hearing?” he asked.
They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”52They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Search the Scriptures and see for yourself—no prophet ever comes from Galilee!” ---------- [ The most ancient Greek manuscripts do not include John 7:53–8:11. ]
And everyone went to his own house.53Then the meeting broke up, and everybody went home.
