For the music director; according to the tune of "Lilies;" by David. Deliver me, O God, for the water has reached my neck. | 1For the director of music. To the tune of "Lilies." Of David. Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. |
I sink into the deep mire where there is no solid ground; I am in deep water, and the current overpowers me. | 2I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me. |
I am exhausted from shouting for help; my throat is sore; my eyes grow tired of looking for my God. | 3I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. |
Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head. Those who want to destroy me, my enemies for no reason, outnumber me. They make me repay what I did not steal! | 4Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal. |
O God, you are aware of my foolish sins; my guilt is not hidden from you. | 5You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you. |
Let none who rely on you be disgraced because of me, O sovereign LORD and king! Let none who seek you be ashamed because of me, O God of Israel! | 6Lord, the LORD Almighty, may those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me; God of Israel, may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me. |
For I suffer humiliation for your sake and am thoroughly disgraced. | 7For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face. |
My own brothers treat me like a stranger; they act as if I were a foreigner. | 8I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother's children; |
Certainly zeal for your house consumes me; I endure the insults of those who insult you. | 9for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. |
I weep and refrain from eating food, which causes others to insult me. | 10When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn; |
I wear sackcloth and they ridicule me. | 11when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me. |
Those who sit at the city gate gossip about me; drunkards mock me in their songs. | 12Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards. |
O LORD, may you hear my prayer and be favorably disposed to me! O God, because of your great loyal love, answer me with your faithful deliverance! | 13But I pray to you, LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation. |
Rescue me from the mud! Don't let me sink! Deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep water! | 14Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters. |
Don't let the current overpower me! Don't let the deep swallow me up! Don't let the pit devour me! | 15Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me. |
Answer me, O LORD, for your loyal love is good! Because of your great compassion, turn toward me! | 16Answer me, LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. |
Do not ignore your servant, for I am in trouble! Answer me right away! | 17Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble. |
Come near me and redeem me! Because of my enemies, rescue me! | 18Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes. |
You know how I am insulted, humiliated and disgraced; you can see all my enemies. | 19You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you. |
Their insults are painful and make me lose heart; I look for sympathy, but receive none, for comforters, but find none. | 20Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. |
They put bitter poison into my food, and to quench my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. | 21They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst. |
May their dining table become a trap before them! May it be a snare for that group of friends! | 22May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap. |
May their eyes be blinded! Make them shake violently! | 23May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. |
Pour out your judgment on them! May your raging anger overtake them! | 24Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them. |
May their camp become desolate, their tents uninhabited! | 25May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. |
For they harass the one whom you discipline; they spread the news about the suffering of those whom you punish. | 26For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. |
Hold them accountable for all their sins! Do not vindicate them! | 27Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation. |
May their names be deleted from the scroll of the living! Do not let their names be listed with the godly! | 28May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous. |
I am oppressed and suffering! O God, deliver and protect me! | 29But as for me, afflicted and in pain-- may your salvation, God, protect me. |
I will sing praises to God's name! I will magnify him as I give him thanks! | 30I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. |
That will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hooves. | 31This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves. |
The oppressed look on--let them rejoice! You who seek God, may you be encouraged! | 32The poor will see and be glad-- you who seek God, may your hearts live! |
For the LORD listens to the needy; he does not despise his captive people. | 33The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people. |
Let the heavens and the earth praise him, along with the seas and everything that swims in them! | 34Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them, |
For God will deliver Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah, and his people will again live in them and possess Zion. | 35for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it; |
The descendants of his servants will inherit it, and those who are loyal to him will live in it. | 36the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there. |
