After this Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He stayed out of Judea because the Jewish leaders wanted to kill him.1After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.
Now the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near.2Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand.
So Jesus' brothers advised him, "Leave here and go to Judea so your disciples may see your miracles that you are performing.3So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.
For no one who seeks to make a reputation for himself does anything in secret. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world."4For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”
(For not even his own brothers believed in him.) 5For not even his brothers believed in him.
So Jesus replied, "My time has not yet arrived, but you are ready at any opportunity!6Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I am testifying about it that its deeds are evil.7The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.
You go up to the feast yourselves. I am not going up to this feast because my time has not yet fully arrived."8You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.”
When he had said this, he remained in Galilee. 9After saying this, he remained in Galilee.
But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then Jesus himself also went up, not openly but in secret.10But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.
So the Jewish leaders were looking for him at the feast, asking, "Where is he?"11The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?”
There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He is a good man," but others, "He deceives the common people."12And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.”
However, no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jewish leaders. 13Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.
When the feast was half over, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.14About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.
Then the Jewish leaders were astonished and said, "How does this man know so much when he has never had formal instruction?"15The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?”
So Jesus replied, "My teaching is not from me, but from the one who sent me.16So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.
If anyone wants to do God's will, he will know about my teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from my own authority.17If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.
The person who speaks on his own authority desires to receive honor for himself; the one who desires the honor of the one who sent him is a man of integrity, and there is no unrighteousness in him.18The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.
Hasn't Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law! Why do you want to kill me?" 19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”
The crowd answered, "You're possessed by a demon! Who is trying to kill you?"20The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?”
Jesus replied, "I performed one miracle and you are all amazed.21Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it.
However, because Moses gave you the practice of circumcision (not that it came from Moses, but from the forefathers), you circumcise a male child on the Sabbath.22Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
But if a male child is circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?23If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well?
Do not judge according to external appearance, but judge with proper judgment." 24Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”
Then some of the residents of Jerusalem began to say, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?25Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?
Yet here he is, speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to him. Do the rulers really know that this man is the Christ?26And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ?
But we know where this man comes from. Whenever the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from." 27But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.”
Then Jesus, while teaching in the temple courts, cried out, "You both know me and know where I come from! And I have not come on my own initiative, but the one who sent me is true. You do not know him,28So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know.
but I know him, because I have come from him and he sent me." 29I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.”
So then they tried to seize Jesus, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.30So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
Yet many of the crowd believed in him and said, "Whenever the Christ comes, he won't perform more miraculous signs than this man did, will he?" 31Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”
The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Jesus, so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.32The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.
Then Jesus said, "I will be with you for only a little while longer, and then I am going to the one who sent me.33Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me.
You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come." 34You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.”
Then the Jewish leaders said to one another, "Where is he going to go that we cannot find him? He is not going to go to the Jewish people dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he?35The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?
What did he mean by saying, 'You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come'?" 36What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”
On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and37On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
let the one who believes in me drink. Just as the scripture says, 'From within him will flow rivers of living water.'"38Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
(Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.) 39Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
When they heard these words, some of the crowd began to say, "This really is the Prophet!"40When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.”
Others said, "This is the Christ!" But still others said, "No, for the Christ doesn't come from Galilee, does he?41Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee?
Don't the scriptures say that the Christ is a descendant of David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?"42Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”
So there was a division in the crowd because of Jesus.43So there was a division among the people over him.
Some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. 44Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why didn't you bring him back with you?"45The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?”
The officers replied, "No one ever spoke like this man!"46The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”
Then the Pharisees answered, "You haven't been deceived too, have you?47The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?
None of the rulers or the Pharisees have believed in him, have they?48Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?
But this rabble who do not know the law are accursed!" 49But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before and who was one of the rulers, said,50Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them,
"Our law doesn't condemn a man unless it first hears from him and learns what he is doing, does it?"51“Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”
They replied, "You aren't from Galilee too, are you? Investigate carefully and you will see that no prophet comes from Galilee!" 52They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”
[[And each one departed to his own house.53[[They went each to his own house,
