For the choir director; according to Shoshannim. A Psalm of David. Save me, O God, For the waters have threatened my life. | 1For the choir director: according to "The Lilies." Davidic. Save me, God, for the water has risen to my neck. |
I have sunk in deep mire, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a flood overflows me. | 2I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing; I have come into deep waters, and a flood sweeps over me. |
I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched; My eyes fail while I wait for my God. | 3I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. |
Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; Those who would destroy me are powerful, being wrongfully my enemies; What I did not steal, I then have to restore. | 4Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me, are powerful. Though I did not steal, I must repay. |
O God, it is You who knows my folly, And my wrongs are not hidden from You. | 5God, You know my foolishness, and my guilty acts are not hidden from You. |
May those who wait for You not be ashamed through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; May those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel, | 6Do not let those who put their hope in You be disgraced because of me, Lord GOD of Hosts; do not let those who seek You be humiliated because of me, God of Israel. |
Because for Your sake I have borne reproach; Dishonor has covered my face. | 7For I have endured insults because of You, and shame has covered my face. |
I have become estranged from my brothers And an alien to my mother's sons. | 8I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother's sons |
For zeal for Your house has consumed me, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me. | 9because zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult You have fallen on me. |
When I wept in my soul with fasting, It became my reproach. | 10I mourned and fasted, but it brought me insults. |
When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. | 11I wore sackcloth as my clothing, and I was a joke to them. |
Those who sit in the gate talk about me, And I am the song of the drunkards. | 12Those who sit at the city gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me. |
But as for me, my prayer is to You, O LORD, at an acceptable time; O God, in the greatness of Your lovingkindness, Answer me with Your saving truth. | 13But as for me, LORD, my prayer to You is for a time of favor. In Your abundant, faithful love, God, answer me with Your sure salvation. |
Deliver me from the mire and do not let me sink; May I be delivered from my foes and from the deep waters. | 14Rescue me from the miry mud; don't let me sink. Let me be rescued from those who hate me and from the deep waters. |
May the flood of water not overflow me Nor the deep swallow me up, Nor the pit shut its mouth on me. | 15Don't let the floodwaters sweep over me or the deep swallow me up; don't let the Pit close its mouth over me. |
Answer me, O LORD, for Your lovingkindness is good; According to the greatness of Your compassion, turn to me, | 16Answer me, LORD, for Your faithful love is good; in keeping with Your great compassion, turn to me. |
And do not hide Your face from Your servant, For I am in distress; answer me quickly. | 17Don't hide Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly! |
Oh draw near to my soul and redeem it; Ransom me because of my enemies! | 18Draw near to me and redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies. |
You know my reproach and my shame and my dishonor; All my adversaries are before You. | 19You know the insults I endure-- my shame and disgrace. You are aware of all my adversaries. |
Reproach has broken my heart and I am so sick. And I looked for sympathy, but there was none, And for comforters, but I found none. | 20Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I waited for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, but found no one. |
They also gave me gall for my food And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. | 21Instead, they gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. |
May their table before them become a snare; And when they are in peace, may it become a trap. | 22Let their table set before them be a snare, and let it be a trap for their allies. |
May their eyes grow dim so that they cannot see, And make their loins shake continually. | 23Let their eyes grow too dim to see, and let their loins continually shake. |
Pour out Your indignation on them, And may Your burning anger overtake them. | 24Pour out Your rage on them, and let Your burning anger overtake them. |
May their camp be desolate; May none dwell in their tents. | 25Make their fortification desolate; may no one live in their tents. |
For they have persecuted him whom You Yourself have smitten, And they tell of the pain of those whom You have wounded. | 26For they persecute the one You struck and talk about the pain of those You wounded. |
Add iniquity to their iniquity, And may they not come into Your righteousness. | 27Add guilt to their guilt; do not let them share in Your righteousness. |
May they be blotted out of the book of life And may they not be recorded with the righteous. | 28Let them be erased from the book of life and not be recorded with the righteous. |
But I am afflicted and in pain; May Your salvation, O God, set me securely on high. | 29But as for me--poor and in pain-- let Your salvation protect me, God. |
I will praise the name of God with song And magnify Him with thanksgiving. | 30I will praise God's name with song and exalt Him with thanksgiving. |
And it will please the LORD better than an ox Or a young bull with horns and hoofs. | 31That will please Yahweh more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and hooves. |
The humble have seen it and are glad; You who seek God, let your heart revive. | 32The humble will see it and rejoice. You who seek God, take heart! |
For the LORD hears the needy And does not despise His who are prisoners. | 33For the LORD listens to the needy and does not despise His own who are prisoners. |
Let heaven and earth praise Him, The seas and everything that moves in them. | 34Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them, |
For God will save Zion and build the cities of Judah, That they may dwell there and possess it. | 35for God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah. They will live there and possess it. |
The descendants of His servants will inherit it, And those who love His name will dwell in it. | 36The descendants of His servants will inherit it, and those who love His name will live in it. |
