King James BibleNew International Version
Now there was a certain man of Ramathaimzophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:1There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.2He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.3Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD.
And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:4Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.
But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb.5But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the LORD had closed her womb.
And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.6Because the LORD had closed Hannah's womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.
And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.7This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.
Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?8Her husband Elkanah would say to her, "Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don't you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don't I mean more to you than ten sons?"
So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.9Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the LORD's house.
And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.10In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly.
And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no rasor come upon his head.11And she made a vow, saying, "LORD Almighty, if you will only look on your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head."
And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.12As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth.
Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.13Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk
And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.14and said to her, "How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine."
And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.15"Not so, my lord," Hannah replied, "I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD.
Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.16Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief."
Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.17Eli answered, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him."
And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.18She said, "May your servant find favor in your eyes." Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.
And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.19Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the LORD and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.20So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, "Because I asked the LORD for him."
And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.21When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow,
But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.22Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, "After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the LORD, and he will live there always."
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.23"Do what seems best to you," her husband Elkanah told her. "Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the LORD make good his word." So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.24After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.
And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.25When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli,
And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.26and she said to him, "Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.
For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:27I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him.
Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.28So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." And he worshiped the LORD there.
