After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.1After this, Jesus traveled in Galilee, since he did not want to travel in Judea because the Jews were trying to kill him.
Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.2The Jewish Festival of Shelters was near.
His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.3So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea so your disciples can see your works that you are doing.
For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.4For no one does anything in secret while he's seeking public recognition. If you do these things, show yourself to the world."
For neither did his brethren believe in him.5(For not even his brothers believed in him.)
Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.6Jesus told them, "My time has not yet arrived, but your time is always at hand.
The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.7The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me because I testify about it--that its works are evil.
Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.8Go up to the festival yourselves. I'm not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come."
When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.9After he had said these things, he stayed in Galilee.
But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.10After his brothers had gone up to the festival, then he also went up, not openly but secretly.
Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?11The Jews were looking for him at the festival and saying, "Where is he?"
And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.12And there was a lot of murmuring about him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He's a good man." Others were saying, "No, on the contrary, he's deceiving the people."
Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.13Still, nobody was talking publicly about him for fear of the Jews.
Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.14When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach.
And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?15Then the Jews were amazed and said, "How is this man so learned, since he hasn't been trained?"
Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.16Jesus answered them, "My teaching isn't mine but is from the one who sent me.
If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.17If anyone wants to do his will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own.
He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.18The one who speaks on his own seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?19Didn't Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"
The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?20"You have a demon!" the crowd responded. "Who is trying to kill you?"
Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.21"I performed one work, and you are all amazed," Jesus answered.
Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.22"This is why Moses has given you circumcision--not that it comes from Moses but from the fathers--and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?23If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses won't be broken, are you angry at me because I made a man entirely well on the Sabbath?
Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.24Stop judging according to outward appearances; rather judge according to righteous judgment."
Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?25Some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?
But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?26Yet, look, he's speaking publicly and they're saying nothing to him. Can it be true that the authorities know he is the Messiah?
Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.27But we know where this man is from. When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where he is from."
Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.28As he was teaching in the temple, Jesus cried out, "You know me and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on my own, but the one who sent me is true. You don't know him;
But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.29I know him because I am from him, and he sent me."
Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.30Then they tried to seize him. Yet no one laid a hand on him because his hour had not yet come.
And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?31However, many from the crowd believed in him and said, "When the Messiah comes, he won't perform more signs than this man has done, will he?"
The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.32The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about him, and so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent servants to arrest him.
Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.33Then Jesus said, "I am only with you for a short time. Then I'm going to the one who sent me.
Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.34You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come."
Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?35Then the Jews said to one another, "Where does he intend to go so we won't find him? He doesn't intend to go to the Jewish people dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does he?
What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?36What is this remark he made: 'You will look for me, and you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come'?"
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.37On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.38The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him."
(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)39He said this about the Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus were going to receive the Spirit, for the Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.40When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, "This truly is the Prophet."
Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?41Others said, "This is the Messiah." But some said, "Surely the Messiah doesn't come from Galilee, does he?
Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?42Doesn't the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David's offspring and from the town of Bethlehem, where David lived?"
So there was a division among the people because of him.43So the crowd was divided because of him.
And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.44Some of them wanted to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.
Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?45Then the servants came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him?"
The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.46The servants answered, "No man ever spoke like this!"
Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?47Then the Pharisees responded to them: "Are you fooled too?
Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?48Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in him?
But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.49But this crowd, which doesn't know the law, is accursed."
Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)50Nicodemus--the one who came to him previously and who was one of them--said to them,
Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?51"Our law doesn't judge a man before it hears from him and knows what he's doing, does it?"
They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.52"You aren't from Galilee too, are you?" they replied. "Investigate and you will see that no prophet arises from Galilee."
And every man went unto his own house.53Then each one went to his house.
