Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. | 1Save me, God, for the water has risen to my neck. |
I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. | 2I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing; I have come into deep water, and a flood sweeps over me. |
I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God. | 3I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. |
More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore? | 4Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me, are powerful. Though I did not steal, I must repay. |
O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you. | 5God, you know my foolishness, and my guilty acts are not hidden from you. |
Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel. | 6Do not let those who put their hope in you be disgraced because of me, Lord GOD of Armies; do not let those who seek you be humiliated because of me, God of Israel. |
For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face. | 7For I have endured insults because of you, and shame has covered my face. |
I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons. | 8I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother's sons |
For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. | 9because zeal for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me. |
When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach. | 10I mourned and fasted, but it brought me insults. |
When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. | 11I wore sackcloth as my clothing, and I was a joke to them. |
I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me. | 12Those who sit at the city gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me. |
But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness. | 13But as for me, LORD, my prayer to you is for a time of favor. In your abundant, faithful love, God, answer me with your sure salvation. |
Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. | 14Rescue me from the miry mud; don't let me sink. Let me be rescued from those who hate me and from the deep water. |
Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me. | 15Don't let the floodwaters sweep over me or the deep swallow me up; don't let the Pit close its mouth over me. |
Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me. | 16Answer me, LORD, for your faithful love is good. In keeping with your abundant compassion, turn to me. |
Hide not your face from your servant, for I am in distress; make haste to answer me. | 17Don't hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly! |
Draw near to my soul, redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies! | 18Come near to me and redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies. |
You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you. | 19You know the insults I endure--my shame and disgrace. You are aware of all my adversaries. |
Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. | 20Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I waited for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, but found no one. |
They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. | 21Instead, they gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. |
Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap. | 22Let their table set before them be a snare, and let it be a trap for their allies. |
Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually. | 23Let their eyes grow too dim to see, and let their hips continually quake. |
Pour out your indignation upon them, and let your burning anger overtake them. | 24Pour out your rage on them, and let your burning anger overtake them. |
May their camp be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents. | 25Make their fortification desolate; may no one live in their tents. |
For they persecute him whom you have struck down, and they recount the pain of those you have wounded. | 26For they persecute the one you struck and talk about the pain of those you wounded. |
Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you. | 27Charge them with crime on top of crime; do not let them share in your righteousness. |
Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous. | 28Let them be erased from the book of life and not be recorded with the righteous. |
But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high! | 29But as for me--poor and in pain--let your salvation protect me, God. |
I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. | 30I will praise God's name with song and exalt him with thanksgiving. |
This will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. | 31That will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and hooves. |
When the humble see it they will be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive. | 32The humble will see it and rejoice. You who seek God, take heart! |
For the LORD hears the needy and does not despise his own people who are prisoners. | 33For the LORD listens to the needy and does not despise his own who are prisoners. |
Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them. | 34Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them, |
For God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah, and people shall dwell there and possess it; | 35for God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah. They will live there and possess it. |
the offspring of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall dwell in it. | 36The descendants of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will live in it. |
