| 1At that time some of those present told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. | 1About this time Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple. |
| 2To this He replied, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered this fate? | 2 “Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee?” Jesus asked. “Is that why they suffered? |
| 3No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish. | 3 Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God. |
| 4Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam collapsed on them: Do you think that they were more sinful than all the others living in Jerusalem? | 4 And what about the eighteen people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem? |
| 5No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” | 5 No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will perish, too.” Parable of the Barren Fig Tree |
| 6Then Jesus told this parable: “A man had a fig tree that was planted in his vineyard. He went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. | 6Then Jesus told this story: “A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed. |
| 7So he said to the keeper of the vineyard, ‘Look, for the past three years I have come to search for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Therefore cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ | 7 Finally, he said to his gardener, ‘I’ve waited three years, and there hasn’t been a single fig! Cut it down. It’s just taking up space in the garden.’ |
| 8‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone again this year, until I dig around it and fertilize it. | 8 “The gardener answered, ‘Sir, give it one more chance. Leave it another year, and I’ll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer. |
| 9If it bears fruit next year, fine. But if not, you can cut it down.’ ” | 9 If we get figs next year, fine. If not, then you can cut it down.’” Jesus Heals on the Sabbath |
| 10One Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, | 10One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue, |
| 11and a woman there had been disabled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was hunched over and could not stand up straight. | 11he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight. |
| 12When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your disability.” | 12When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!” |
| 13Then He placed His hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and began to glorify God. | 13Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God! |
| 14But the synagogue leader was indignant that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. “There are six days for work,” he told the crowd. “So come and be healed on those days and not on the Sabbath.” | 14But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.” |
| 15“You hypocrites!” the Lord replied, “Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it to water? | 15But the Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water? |
| 16Then should not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be released from her bondage on the Sabbath day?” | 16 This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?” |
| 17When Jesus said this, all His adversaries were humiliated. And the whole crowd rejoiced at all the glorious things He was doing. | 17This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did. Parable of the Mustard Seed |
| 18Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it? | 18Then Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it? |
| 19It is like a mustard seed that a man tossed into his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.” | 19 It is like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden; it grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make nests in its branches.” Parable of the Yeast |
| 20Again He asked, “To what can I compare the kingdom of God? | 20He also asked, “What else is the Kingdom of God like? |
| 21It is like leaven that a woman took and mixed into three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened.” | 21 It is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.” The Narrow Door |
| 22Then Jesus traveled throughout the towns and villages, teaching as He made His way toward Jerusalem. | 22Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he went, always pressing on toward Jerusalem. |
| 23“Lord,” someone asked Him, “will only a few people be saved?” Jesus answered, | 23Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” He replied, |
| 24“Make every effort to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able. | 24 “Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail. |
| 25After the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, you will stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ But he will reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ | 25 When the master of the house has locked the door, it will be too late. You will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Lord, open the door for us!’ But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ |
| 26Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ | 26 Then you will say, ‘But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ |
| 27And he will answer, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers.’ | 27 And he will reply, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you come from. Get away from me, all you who do evil.’ |
| 28There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves are thrown out. | 28 “There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, for you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you will be thrown out. |
| 29People will come from east and west and north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. | 29 And people will come from all over the world—from east and west, north and south—to take their places in the Kingdom of God. |
| 30And indeed, some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last.” | 30 And note this: Some who seem least important now will be the greatest then, and some who are the greatest now will be least important then. ” Jesus Grieves over Jerusalem |
| 31At that very hour, some Pharisees came to Jesus and told Him, “Leave this place and get away, because Herod wants to kill You.” | 31At that time some Pharisees said to him, “Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!” |
| 32But Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘Look, I will keep driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach My goal.’ | 32Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose. |
| 33Nevertheless, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day, for it is not admissible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem. | 33 Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day I must proceed on my way. For it wouldn’t do for a prophet of God to be killed except in Jerusalem! |
| 34O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her, how often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling! | 34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me. |
| 35Look, your house is left to you desolate. And I tell you that you will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ” | 35 And now, look, your house is abandoned. And you will never see me again until you say, ‘Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the LORD !’ ” |
