“Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands before they eat.” | 2"Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat." |
Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? | 3He answered them, "And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition? |
For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ | 4For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.' |
But you say that if anyone says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’ | 5But you say, 'If someone tells his father or mother, "Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God," |
he need not honor his father or mother with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. | 6he does not need to honor his father.' You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition. |
You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you: | 7Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said, |
‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. | 8This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me, |
They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.’ ” | 9and they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'" |

Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.” | 15But Peter said to him, "Explain this parable to us." |
“Do you still not understand?” Jesus asked. | 16Jesus said, "Even after all this, are you still so foolish? |
“Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated? | 17Don't you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer? |
But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man. | 18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person. |
For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander. | 19For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. |
These are what defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile him.” | 20These are the things that defile a person; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles a person." |
