“Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands before they eat.” | 2"Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat." |
Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? | 3He answered them, "Why do you break God's commandment because of your tradition? |
For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ | 4For God said: Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death. |
But you say that if anyone says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’ | 5But you say, 'Whoever tells his father or mother, "Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple," |
he need not honor his father or mother with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. | 6he does not have to honor his father.' In this way, you have nullified the word of God because of your tradition. |
You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you: | 7Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said: |
‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. | 8This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. |

A man is not defiled by what enters his mouth, but by what comes out of it.” | 11It's not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth--this defiles a person." |
Then the disciples came to Him and said, “Are You aware that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?” | 12Then the disciples came up and told him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?" |
But Jesus replied, “Every plant that My heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by its roots. | 13He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father didn't plant will be uprooted. |
Disregard them! They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.” | 14Leave them alone! They are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit." |
Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.” | 15Then Peter said, "Explain this parable to us." |
“Do you still not understand?” Jesus asked. | 16"Do you still lack understanding?" he asked. |
“Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated? | 17"Don't you realize that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated? |
But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man. | 18But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person. |
For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander. | 19For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander. |
These are what defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile him.” | 20These are the things that defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person." |

My daughter is severely tormented by a demon." |
But Jesus did not answer a word. So His disciples came and urged Him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” | 23Jesus did not say a word to her. His disciples approached him and urged him, "Send her away because she's crying out after us." |

“Yes, Lord,” she said, “even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” | 27"Yes, Lord," she said, "yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." |
“O woman,” Jesus answered, “your faith is great! Let it be done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour. | 28Then Jesus replied to her, "Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want." And from that moment her daughter was healed. |

And they glorified the God of Israel. | 31So the crowd was amazed when they saw those unable to speak talking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they gave glory to the God of Israel. |
Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may faint along the way.” | 32Jesus called his disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they've already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry, otherwise they might collapse on the way." |

And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground. | 35After commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground, |
Taking the seven loaves and the fish, He gave thanks and broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. | 36he took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. |
They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. | 37They all ate and were satisfied. They collected the leftover pieces--seven large baskets full. |
