When Jesus had finished saying these things, He left Galilee and went into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. | 1When Jesus had finished these words, He departed from Galilee and came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan; |
Large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there. | 2and large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there. |
Then some Pharisees came and tested Him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?” | 3Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?" |
Jesus answered, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ | 4And He answered and said, "Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, |
and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? | 5and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH '? |
So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” | 6"So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate." |
“Why then,” they asked, “did Moses order a man to give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” | 7They said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY?" |
Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of your hardness of heart; but it was not this way from the beginning. | 8He said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. |
Now I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman, commits adultery.” | 9"And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery." |
His disciples said to Him, “If this is the case between a man and his wife, it is better not to marry.” | 10The disciples said to Him, "If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry." |
“Not everyone can accept this word,” He replied, “but only those to whom it has been given. | 11But He said to them, "Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given. |
For there are eunuchs who were born that way; others were made that way by men; and still others live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.” | 12"For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it." |
Then the little children were brought to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them and pray for them. And the disciples rebuked those who brought them. | 13Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. |
But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them! For the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” | 14But Jesus said, "Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." |
And after He had placed His hands on them, He went on from there. | 15After laying His hands on them, He departed from there. |
Just then a man came up to Jesus and inquired, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to obtain eternal life?” | 16And someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?" |
“Why do you ask Me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” | 17And He said to him, "Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments." |
“Which ones?” the man asked. Jesus answered, “ ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, | 18Then he said to Him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS; |
honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” | 19HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." |
“All these I have kept,” said the young man. “What do I still lack?” | 20The young man said to Him, "All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?" |
Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” | 21Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." |
When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth. | 22But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property. |
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. | 23And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. |
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” | 24"Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." |
When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” | 25When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, "Then who can be saved?" |
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” | 26And looking at them Jesus said to them, "With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." |
“Look,” Peter replied, “we have left everything to follow You. What then will there be for us?” | 27Then Peter said to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?" |
Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, in the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on His glorious throne, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | 28And Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for the sake of My name will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. | 29"And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life. |
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. | 30"But many who are first will be last; and the last, first. |
