1Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribes of Israel

1וַֽיִּגְּשׁ֗וּ רָאשֵׁי֙ אֲב֣וֹת הַלְוִיִּ֔ם אֶל־ אֶלְעָזָר֙ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְאֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ בִּן־ נ֑וּן וְאֶל־ רָאשֵׁ֛י אֲב֥וֹת הַמַּטּ֖וֹת לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

2at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, along with pasturelands for our livestock.”

2וַיְדַבְּר֨וּ אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם בְּשִׁלֹ֗ה בְּאֶ֤רֶץ כְּנַ֙עַן֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יְהוָה֙ צִוָּ֣ה בְיַד־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה לָֽתֶת־ לָ֥נוּ עָרִ֖ים לָשָׁ֑בֶת וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֖ן לִבְהֶמְתֵּֽנוּ׃

3So by the command of the LORD, the Israelites gave the Levites these cities and their pasturelands out of their own inheritance:

3וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל לַלְוִיִּ֛ם מִנַּחֲלָתָ֖ם אֶל־ פִּ֣י יְהוָ֑ה אֶת־ הֶעָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה וְאֶת־ מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן׃

4The first lot came out for the Kohathite clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.

4וַיֵּצֵ֥א הַגּוֹרָ֖ל לְמִשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת הַקְּהָתִ֑י וַיְהִ֡י לִבְנֵי֩ אַהֲרֹ֨ן הַכֹּהֵ֜ן מִן־ הַלְוִיִּ֗ם מִמַּטֵּ֣ה יְ֠הוּדָה וּמִמַּטֵּ֨ה הַשִּׁמְעֹנִ֜י וּמִמַּטֵּ֤ה בִנְיָמִן֙ בַּגּוֹרָ֔ל עָרִ֖ים שְׁלֹ֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵֽה׃ ס

5The remaining descendants of Kohath received ten cities by lot from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

5וְלִבְנֵ֨י קְהָ֜ת הַנּוֹתָרִ֗ים מִמִּשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת מַטֵּֽה־ אֶ֠פְרַיִם וּֽמִמַּטֵּה־ דָ֞ן וּמֵחֲצִ֨י מַטֵּ֧ה מְנַשֶּׁ֛ה בַּגּוֹרָ֖ל עָרִ֥ים עָֽשֶׂר׃ ס

6The descendants of Gershon received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.

6וְלִבְנֵ֣י גֵרְשׁ֗וֹן מִמִּשְׁפְּח֣וֹת מַטֵּֽה־ יִשָּׂשכָ֣ר וּמִמַּטֵּֽה־ אָ֠שֵׁר וּמִמַּטֵּ֨ה נַפְתָּלִ֜י וּ֠מֵחֲצִי מַטֵּ֨ה מְנַשֶּׁ֤ה בַבָּשָׁן֙ בַּגּוֹרָ֔ל עָרִ֖ים שְׁלֹ֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵֽה׃ ס

7The descendants of Merari received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

7לִבְנֵ֨י מְרָרִ֜י לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֗ם מִמַּטֵּ֨ה רְאוּבֵ֤ן וּמִמַּטֵּה־ גָד֙ וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה זְבוּלֻ֔ן עָרִ֖ים שְׁתֵּ֥ים עֶשְׂרֵֽה׃

8So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these cities along with their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.

8וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לַלְוִיִּ֔ם אֶת־ הֶעָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה וְאֶת־ מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֑ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה בְּיַד־ מֹשֶׁ֖ה בַּגּוֹרָֽל׃ פ

9From the tribes of Judah and Simeon, they designated these cities by name

9וַֽיִּתְּנ֗וּ מִמַּטֵּה֙ בְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וּמִמַּטֵּ֖ה בְּנֵ֣י שִׁמְע֑וֹן אֵ֚ת הֶֽעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁר־ יִקְרָ֥א אֶתְהֶ֖ן בְּשֵֽׁם׃

10to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them:

10וַֽיְהִי֙ לִבְנֵ֣י אַהֲרֹ֔ן מִמִּשְׁפְּח֥וֹת הַקְּהָתִ֖י מִבְּנֵ֣י לֵוִ֑י כִּ֥י לָהֶ֛ם הָיָ֥ה הַגּוֹרָ֖ל רִיאשֹׁנָֽה׃

11They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of Anak.)

11וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ לָהֶ֜ם אֶת־ קִרְיַת֩ אַרְבַּ֨ע אֲבִ֧י הָֽעֲנ֛וֹק הִ֥יא חֶבְר֖וֹן בְּהַ֣ר יְהוּדָ֑ה וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֖הָ סְבִיבֹתֶֽיהָ׃

12But they had given the fields and villages around the city to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.

12וְאֶת־ שְׂדֵ֥ה הָעִ֖יר וְאֶת־ חֲצֵרֶ֑יהָ נָֽתְנ֛וּ לְכָלֵ֥ב בֶּן־ יְפֻנֶּ֖ה בַּאֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ׃ ס

13So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave these cities with their pasturelands: Hebron, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Libnah,

13וְלִבְנֵ֣י ׀ אַהֲרֹ֣ן הַכֹּהֵ֗ן נָֽתְנוּ֙ אֶת־ עִיר֙ מִקְלַ֣ט הָרֹצֵ֔חַ אֶת־ חֶבְר֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ וְאֶת־ לִבְנָ֖ה וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

14Jattir, Eshtemoa,

14וְאֶת־ יַתִּר֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ אֶשְׁתְּמֹ֖עַ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

15Holon, Debir,

15וְאֶת־ חֹלֹן֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ דְּבִ֖ר וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

16Ain, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh—nine cities from these two tribes, along with their pasturelands.

16וְאֶת־ עַ֣יִן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֗הָ וְאֶת־ יֻטָּה֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־ בֵּ֥ית שֶׁ֖מֶשׁ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֣ים תֵּ֔שַׁע מֵאֵ֕ת שְׁנֵ֥י הַשְּׁבָטִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ פ

17And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, Geba,

17וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה בִנְיָמִ֔ן אֶת־ גִּבְע֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־ גֶּ֖בַע וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

18Anathoth, and Almon—four cities, along with their pasturelands.

18אֶת־ עֲנָתוֹת֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ עַלְמ֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃

19Altogether thirteen cities with their pasturelands were given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.

19כָּל־ עָרֵ֥י בְנֵֽי־ אַהֲרֹ֖ן הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֑ים שְׁלֹשׁ־ עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה עָרִ֖ים וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן׃ ס

20The remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted these cities: From the tribe of Ephraim

20וּלְמִשְׁפְּח֤וֹת בְּנֵֽי־ קְהָת֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם הַנּוֹתָרִ֖ים מִבְּנֵ֣י קְהָ֑ת וַֽיְהִי֙ עָרֵ֣י גֽוֹרָלָ֔ם מִמַּטֵּ֖ה אֶפְרָֽיִם׃

21they were given Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Gezer,

21וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ לָהֶ֜ם אֶת־ עִ֨יר מִקְלַ֧ט הָרֹצֵ֛חַ אֶת־ שְׁכֶ֥ם וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֖הָ בְּהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם וְאֶת־ גֶּ֖זֶר וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

22Kibzaim, and Beth-horon—four cities, along with their pasturelands.

22וְאֶת־ קִבְצַ֙יִם֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ בֵּ֥ית חוֹרֹ֖ן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס

23From the tribe of Dan they were given Elteke, Gibbethon,

23וּמִמַּ֨טֵּה־ דָ֔ן אֶֽת־ אֶלְתְּקֵ֖א וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶֽת־ גִּבְּת֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

24Aijalon, and Gath-rimmon—four cities, along with their pasturelands.

24אֶת־ אַיָּלוֹן֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־ גַּת־ רִמּ֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס

25And from the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given Taanach and Gath-rimmon—two cities, along with their pasturelands.

25וּמִֽמַּחֲצִית֙ מַטֵּ֣ה מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה אֶת־ תַּעְנַךְ֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ גַּת־ רִמּ֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים שְׁתָּֽיִם׃

26Altogether ten cities with their pasturelands were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.

26כָּל־ עָרִ֥ים עֶ֖שֶׂר וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֑ן לְמִשְׁפְּח֥וֹת בְּנֵֽי־ קְהָ֖ת הַנּוֹתָרִֽים׃ ס

27This is what the Levite clans of the Gershonites were given: From the half-tribe of Manasseh they received Golan in Bashan, a city of refuge for the manslayer, and Beeshterah—two cities, along with their pasturelands.

27וְלִבְנֵ֣י גֵרְשׁוֹן֮ מִמִּשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת הַלְוִיִּם֒ מֵחֲצִ֞י מַטֵּ֣ה מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה אֶת־ עִיר֙ מִקְלַ֣ט הָרֹצֵ֔חַ אֶת־ [גלון] (גּוֹלָ֤ן) בַּבָּשָׁן֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶֽת־ בְּעֶשְׁתְּרָ֖ה וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים שְׁתָּֽיִם׃ ס

28From the tribe of Issachar they received Kishion, Daberath,

28וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה יִשָּׂשכָ֔ר אֶת־ קִשְׁי֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־ דָּֽבְרַ֖ת וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

29Jarmuth, and En-gannim—four cities, along with their pasturelands.

29אֶת־ יַרְמוּת֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־ עֵ֥ין גַּנִּ֖ים וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס

30From the tribe of Asher they received Mishal, Abdon,

30וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה אָשֵׁ֔ר אֶת־ מִשְׁאָ֖ל וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־ עַבְדּ֖וֹן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

31Helkath, and Rehob—four cities, along with their pasturelands.

31אֶת־ חֶלְקָת֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ רְחֹ֖ב וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס

32And from the tribe of Naphtali they received Kedesh in Galilee (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Hammoth-dor, and Kartan—three cities, along with their pasturelands.

32וּמִמַּטֵּ֨ה נַפְתָּלִ֜י אֶת־ עִ֣יר ׀ מִקְלַ֣ט הָֽרֹצֵ֗חַ אֶת־ קֶ֨דֶשׁ בַּגָּלִ֤יל וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֙הָ֙ וְאֶת־ חַמֹּ֥ת דֹּאר֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ קַרְתָּ֖ן וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים שָׁלֹֽשׁ׃

33Altogether thirteen cities with their pasturelands were given to the Gershonite clans.

33כָּל־ עָרֵ֥י הַגֵּרְשֻׁנִּ֖י לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם שְׁלֹשׁ־ עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה עִ֖יר וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן׃ ס

34This is what the Merarite clan (the rest of the Levites) were given: From the tribe of Zebulun they received Jokneam, Kartah,

34וּלְמִשְׁפְּח֣וֹת בְּנֵֽי־ מְרָרִי֮ הַלְוִיִּ֣ם הַנּוֹתָרִים֒ מֵאֵת֙ מַטֵּ֣ה זְבוּלֻ֔ן אֶֽת־ יָקְנְעָ֖ם וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־ קַרְתָּ֖ה וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

35Dimnah, and Nahalal—four cities, along with their pasturelands.

35אֶת־ דִּמְנָה֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶֽת־ נַהֲלָ֖ל וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃

36From the tribe of Reuben they received Bezer, Jahaz,

36וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה רְאוּבֵ֔ן אֶת־ בֶּ֖צֶר וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ וְאֶת־ יַ֖הְצָה וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

37Kedemoth, and Mephaath—four cities, along with their pasturelands.

37אֶת־ קְדֵמוֹת֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־ מֵיפָ֖עַת וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃ ס

38And from the tribe of Gad they received Ramoth in Gilead, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Mahanaim,

38וּמִמַּטֵּה־ גָ֗ד אֶת־ עִיר֙ מִקְלַ֣ט הָרֹצֵ֔חַ אֶת־ רָמֹ֥ת בַּגִּלְעָ֖ד וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ וְאֶֽת־ מַחֲנַ֖יִם וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ׃

39Heshbon, and Jazer—four cities in all, along with their pasturelands.

39אֶת־ חֶשְׁבּוֹן֙ וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־ יַעְזֵ֖ר וְאֶת־ מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ כָּל־ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע׃

40Altogether twelve cities were allotted to the clans of Merari, the remaining Levite clans.

40כָּל־ הֶ֨עָרִ֜ים לִבְנֵ֤י מְרָרִי֙ לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔ם הַנּוֹתָרִ֖ים מִמִּשְׁפְּח֣וֹת הַלְוִיִּ֑ם וַיְהִי֙ גּוֹרָלָ֔ם עָרִ֖ים שְׁתֵּ֥ים עֶשְׂרֵֽה׃

41So in all there were forty-eight cities for the Levites, along with their pasturelands, within the territory of the Israelites.

41כֹּ֚ל עָרֵ֣י הַלְוִיִּ֔ם בְּת֖וֹךְ אֲחֻזַּ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עָרִ֛ים אַרְבָּעִ֥ים וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן׃

42Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.

42תִּֽהְיֶ֙ינָה֙ הֶעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה עִ֣יר עִ֔יר וּמִגְרָשֶׁ֖יהָ סְבִיבֹתֶ֑יהָ כֵּ֖ן לְכָל־ הֶעָרִ֥ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ ס

43Thus the LORD gave Israel all the land He had sworn to give their fathers, and they took possession of it and settled there.

43וַיִּתֵּ֤ן יְהוָה֙ לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶת־ כָּל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖ע לָתֵ֣ת לַאֲבוֹתָ֑ם וַיִּרָשׁ֖וּהָ וַיֵּ֥שְׁבוּ בָֽהּ׃

44And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.

44וַיָּ֨נַח יְהוָ֤ה לָהֶם֙ מִסָּבִ֔יב כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ נִשְׁבַּ֖ע לַאֲבוֹתָ֑ם וְלֹא־ עָ֨מַד אִ֤ישׁ בִּפְנֵיהֶם֙ מִכָּל־ אֹ֣יְבֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֚ת כָּל־ אֹ֣יְבֵיהֶ֔ם נָתַ֥ן יְהוָ֖ה בְּיָדָֽם׃

45Not one of all the LORD's good promises to the house of Israel failed; everything was fulfilled.

45לֹֽא־ נָפַ֣ל דָּבָ֔ר מִכֹּל֙ הַדָּבָ֣ר הַטּ֔וֹב אֲשֶׁר־ דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הַכֹּ֖ל בָּֽא׃ פ
