Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribes of Israel1Then the family leaders of the descendants of Levi approached Eleazar the priest and Nun's son Joshua, along with the family leaders of the people of Israel.
at Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said to them, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, together with pasturelands for our livestock.”2It was at Shiloh in the land of Canaan that they told them, "The LORD ordered through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, along with their pasture lands for our livestock."
So by the command of the LORD, the Israelites gave the Levites these cities and their pasturelands out of their own inheritance:3So, just as the Lord had said, the Israelis set aside cities for the descendants of Levi from a portion of their own inheritances, along with their grazing lands.
The first lot came out for the Kohathite clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.4The lottery went to the families of the descendants of Kohath. So the descendants of Aaron the priest, who were descendants of Levi, received thirteen cities by random lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.
The remaining descendants of Kohath received ten cities by lot from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.5The rest of the descendants of Kohath received ten cities by random lot from the families of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
The descendants of Gershon received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.6The descendants of Gershon received thirteen cities by random lot from the families of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh located in Bashan.
And the descendants of Merari received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.7The descendants of Merari, allocated according to their families, received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.
So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these cities, together with their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.8The Israelis apportioned these cities, along with their pasture lands, to the descendants of Levi by random lot, just as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
From the tribes of Judah and Simeon, they designated these cities by name9From the tribes of the descendants of Judah and Simeon, they gave these cities, delineated by name:
to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them:10for the descendants of Aaron, one of the families of the descendants of Kohath, of the descendants of Levi, since the lot fell in their favor first.
They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of Anak.)11They gave them Kiriath-arba, also known as Hebron, (Arba was named after the ancestor of Anak), in the hill country of Judah, along with its surrounding pasture lands.
But they had given the fields and villages around the city to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.12But the fields adjoining the city and its surrounding villages were given to Jephunneh's son Caleb.
So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave these cities, together with their pasturelands: Hebron, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Libnah,13So they gave Hebron to the descendants of Aaron the priest to serve as a city of refuge for unintentional killers, along with its pasture lands, Libnah with its pasture lands,

And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, Geba,17From the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its pasture lands, Geba with its pasture lands,

The remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted these cities: From the tribe of Ephraim20Cities from the tribe of Ephraim were also allotted to the families of the descendants of Kohath, that is, to the rest of the descendants of Kohath, who were descendants of Levi.

This is what the Merarite clan (the rest of the Levites) were given: From the tribe of Zebulun they were given Jokneam, Kartah,34From the tribe of Zebulun were allocated to the descendants of Merari (that is, the rest of the descendants of Levi) Jokneam with its pasture lands, Kartah with its pasture lands,

For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities in all, together with their pasturelands, within the territory of the Israelites.41All of the cities of the descendants of Levi that had been set apart among the territorial possession of the Israelis totaled 48, along with their pasture lands.
Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.42These cities were each surrounded by pasture lands, as was the case with all of these cities.
Thus the LORD gave Israel all the land He had sworn to give their fathers, and they took possession of it and settled in it.43So the LORD gave all of the land to Israel that he had promised to give their ancestors, and they took possession and settled there in it.
And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.44The LORD gave them peace all around them, just as he had promised their ancestors. Not one of their enemies was able to oppose them—the LORD placed all of their enemies under their control.
Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel had failed; everything was fulfilled.45Not one of the good promises that the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed—all of them came about.
