Berean Study Bible | English Standard Version |
For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David. Save me, O God, for the waters are up to my neck. | 1Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. |
I have sunk into the miry depths, where there is no footing; I have drifted into deep waters, where the flood engulfs me. | 2I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. |
I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. | 3I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God. |
Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs of my head; many are those who would destroy me—my enemies for no reason. Though I did not steal, I must repay. | 4More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore? |
You know my folly, O God, and my guilt is not hidden from You. | 5O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you. |
May those who hope in You not be ashamed through me, O Lord GOD of Hosts; may those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel. | 6Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel. |
For I have endured scorn for Your sake, and shame has covered my face. | 7For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face. |
I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sons, | 8I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons. |
because zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult You have fallen on me. | 9For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. |
I wept and fasted, but it brought me reproach. | 10When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach. |
I made sackcloth my clothing, and I was sport to them. | 11When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. |
Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of drunkards. | 12I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me. |
But my prayer to You, O LORD, is for a time of favor. In Your abundant loving devotion, O God, answer me with Your sure salvation. | 13But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness. |
Rescue me from the mire and do not let me sink; deliver me from my foes and out of the deep waters. | 14Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. |
Do not let the floods engulf me or the depths swallow me up; let not the Pit close its mouth over me. | 15Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me. |
Answer me, O LORD, for Your loving devotion is good; turn to me in keeping with Your great compassion. | 16Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me. |
Hide not Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly! | 17Hide not your face from your servant, for I am in distress; make haste to answer me. |
Draw near to my soul and redeem me; ransom me because of my foes. | 18Draw near to my soul, redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies! |
You know my reproach, my shame and disgrace. All my adversaries are before You. | 19You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you. |
Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found no one. | 20Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. |
They poisoned my food with gall and gave me vinegar to quench my thirst. | 21They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. |
May their table become a snare; may it be a retribution and a trap. | 22Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap. |
May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. | 23Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually. |
Pour out Your wrath upon them, and let Your burning anger overtake them. | 24Pour out your indignation upon them, and let your burning anger overtake them. |
May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. | 25May their camp be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents. |
For they persecute the one You struck and recount the pain of those You wounded. | 26For they persecute him whom you have struck down, and they recount the pain of those you have wounded. |
Add iniquity to their iniquity; let them not share in Your righteousness. | 27Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you. |
May they be blotted out of the Book of Life and not listed with the righteous. | 28Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous. |
But I am in pain and distress; let Your salvation protect me, O God. | 29But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high! |
I will praise God’s name in song and exalt Him with thanksgiving. | 30I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. |
And this will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and hooves. | 31This will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. |
The humble will see and rejoice. You who seek God, let your hearts be revived! | 32When the humble see it they will be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive. |
For the LORD listens to the needy and does not despise His captive people. | 33For the LORD hears the needy and does not despise his own people who are prisoners. |
Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them. | 34Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them. |
For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah, that they may dwell there and possess it. | 35For God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah, and people shall dwell there and possess it; |
The descendants of His servants will inherit it, and those who love His name will settle in it. | 36the offspring of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall dwell in it. |
