If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. | 8If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. | 8"If the LORD is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us-- a land which flows with milk and honey. | 8If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. | 8If the LORD is pleased with us, He will bring us into this land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and give it to us. |
Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them." | 9Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them.” | 9"Only do not rebel against the LORD; and do not fear the people of the land, for they will be our prey. Their protection has been removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them." | 9Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not. | 9Only don't rebel against the LORD, and don't be afraid of the people of the land, for we will devour them. How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them? | 11And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? | 11The LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people spurn Me? And how long will they not believe in Me, despite all the signs which I have performed in their midst? | 11And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them? | 11The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people despise Me? How long will they not trust in Me despite all the signs I have performed among them? |
I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they." | 12I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.” | 12"I will smite them with pestilence and dispossess them, and I will make you into a nation greater and mightier than they." | 12I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they. | 12I will strike them with a plague and destroy them. Then I will make you into a greater and mightier nation than they are." |
Moses Intercedes for the People 13Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them. | 13But Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, | 13But Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for by Your strength You brought up this people from their midst, | 13And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;) | 13But Moses replied to the LORD, "The Egyptians will hear about it, for by Your strength You brought up this people from them. |
And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, LORD, are with these people and that you, LORD, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. | 14and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O LORD, are in the midst of this people. For you, O LORD, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. | 14and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, O LORD, are in the midst of this people, for You, O LORD, are seen eye to eye, while Your cloud stands over them; and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. | 14And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night. | 14They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, LORD, are among these people, how You, LORD, are seen face to face, how Your cloud stands over them, and how You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. |
If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, | 15Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, | 15"Now if You slay this people as one man, then the nations who have heard of Your fame will say, | 15Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying, | 15If You kill this people with a single blow, the nations that have heard of Your fame will declare, |
The LORD was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath, so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.' | 16‘It is because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’ | 16'Because the LORD could not bring this people into the land which He promised them by oath, therefore He slaughtered them in the wilderness.' | 16Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness. | 16Since the LORD wasn't able to bring this people into the land He swore to give them, He has slaughtered them in the wilderness.'" |
"Now may the Lord's strength be displayed, just as you have declared: | 17And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, | 17"But now, I pray, let the power of the Lord be great, just as You have declared, | 17And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying, | 17So now, may my Lord's power be magnified just as You have spoken: |
The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.' | 18‘The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’ | 18The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations.' | 18The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation. | 18The LORD is slow to anger and rich in faithful love, forgiving wrongdoing and rebellion. But He will not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers' wrongdoing on the children to the third and fourth generation. |
In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now." | 19Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.” | 19"Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness, just as You also have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now." | 19Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now. | 19Please pardon the wrongdoing of this people, in keeping with the greatness of Your faithful love, just as You have forgiven them from Egypt until now." |
God's Forgiveness and Judgment
(Deuteronomy 1:34-40) 20The LORD replied, "I have forgiven them, as you asked. | 20Then the LORD said, “I have pardoned, according to your word. | 20So the LORD said, "I have pardoned them according to your word; | 20And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word: | 20The LORD responded, "I have pardoned them as you requested. |
Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth, | 21But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD, | 21but indeed, as I live, all the earth will be filled with the glory of the LORD. | 21But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD. | 21Yet as surely as I live and as the whole earth is filled with the LORD's glory, |
not one of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times-- | 22none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, | 22"Surely all the men who have seen My glory and My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice, | 22Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice; | 22none of the men who have seen My glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tested Me these 10 times and did not obey Me, |
not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it. | 23shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. | 23shall by no means see the land which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who spurned Me see it. | 23Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it: | 23will ever see the land I swore to give their fathers. None of those who have despised Me will see it. |
But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it. | 24But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. | 24"But My servant Caleb, because he has had a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall take possession of it. | 24But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it. | 24But since My servant Caleb has a different spirit and has followed Me completely, I will bring him into the land where he has gone, and his descendants will inherit it. |
Since the Amalekites and the Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea." | 25Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.” | 25"Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; turn tomorrow and set out to the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea." | 25(Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea. | 25Since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the lowlands, turn back tomorrow and head for the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea." |
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron: | 26And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, | 26The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, | 26And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, | 26Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron: " |
"How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites. | 27“How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. | 27"How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who are grumbling against Me? I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel, which they are making against Me. | 27How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. | 27How long must I endure this evil community that keeps complaining about Me? I have heard the Israelites' complaints that they make against Me. |
So tell them, 'As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say: | 28Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the LORD, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: | 28"Say to them, 'As I live,' says the LORD, 'just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will surely do to you; | 28Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you: | 28Tell them: As surely as I live," this is the LORD's declaration, "I will do to you exactly as I heard you say. |
In this wilderness your bodies will fall--every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me. | 29your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, | 29your corpses will fall in this wilderness, even all your numbered men, according to your complete number from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against Me. | 29Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me, | 29Your corpses will fall in this wilderness--all of you who were registered in the census, the entire number of you 20 years old or more--because you have complained about Me. |
Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. | 30not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. | 30'Surely you shall not come into the land in which I swore to settle you, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. | 30Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. | 30I swear that none of you will enter the land I promised to settle you in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. |
As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected. | 31But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected. | 31'Your children, however, whom you said would become a prey-- I will bring them in, and they will know the land which you have rejected. | 31But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised. | 31I will bring your children whom you said would become plunder into the land you rejected, and they will enjoy it. |
But as for you, your bodies will fall in this wilderness. | 32But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. | 32'But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness. | 32But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness. | 32But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness. |
Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. | 33And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. | 33Your sons shall be shepherds for forty years in the wilderness, and they will suffer for your unfaithfulness, until your corpses lie in the wilderness. | 33And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness. | 33Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for 40 years and bear the penalty for your acts of unfaithfulness until all your corpses lie scattered in the wilderness. |
For forty years--one year for each of the forty days you explored the land--you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.' | 34According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’ | 34According to the number of days which you spied out the land, forty days, for every day you shall bear your guilt a year, even forty years, and you will know My opposition. | 34After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise. | 34You will bear the consequences of your sins 40 years based on the number of the 40 days that you scouted the land, a year for each day. You will know My displeasure. |
I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die." | 35I, the LORD, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.” | 35'I, the LORD, have spoken, surely this I will do to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be destroyed, and there they will die.'" | 35I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die. | 35I, Yahweh, have spoken. I swear that I will do this to the entire evil community that has conspired against Me. They will come to an end in the wilderness, and there they will die." |
The Plague on the Ten Spies 36So the men Moses had sent to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble against him by spreading a bad report about it-- | 36And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land— | 36As for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land and who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing out a bad report concerning the land, | 36And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land, | 36So the men Moses sent to scout out the land, and who returned and incited the entire community to complain about him by spreading a negative report about the land-- |
these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report about the land were struck down and died of a plague before the LORD. | 37the men who brought up a bad report of the land—died by plague before the LORD. | 37even those men who brought out the very bad report of the land died by a plague before the LORD. | 37Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD. | 37those men who spread the negative report about the land were struck down by the LORD. |
Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived. | 38Of those men who went to spy out the land, only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive. | 38But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive out of those men who went to spy out the land. | 38But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still. | 38Only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh remained alive of those men who went to scout out the land. |
When Moses reported this to all the Israelites, they mourned bitterly. | 39When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly. | 39When Moses spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, the people mourned greatly. | 39And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly. | 39When Moses reported these words to all the Israelites, the people were overcome with grief. |
Defeat by Amalekites and Canaanites 40Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country, saying, "Now we are ready to go up to the land the LORD promised. Surely we have sinned!" | 40And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, “Here we are. We will go up to the place that the LORD has promised, for we have sinned.” | 40In the morning, however, they rose up early and went up to the ridge of the hill country, saying, "Here we are; we have indeed sinned, but we will go up to the place which the LORD has promised." | 40And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned. | 40They got up early the next morning and went up the ridge of the hill country, saying, "Let's go to the place the LORD promised, for we were wrong." |
But Moses said, "Why are you disobeying the LORD's command? This will not succeed! | 41But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the LORD, when that will not succeed? | 41But Moses said, "Why then are you transgressing the commandment of the LORD, when it will not succeed? | 41And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper. | 41But Moses responded, "Why are you going against the LORD's command? It won't succeed. |
Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies, | 42Do not go up, for the LORD is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies. | 42"Do not go up, or you will be struck down before your enemies, for the LORD is not among you. | 42Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies. | 42Don't go, because the LORD is not among you and you will be defeated by your enemies. |
for the Amalekites and the Canaanites will face you there. Because you have turned away from the LORD, he will not be with you and you will fall by the sword." | 43For there the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the LORD, the LORD will not be with you.” | 43"For the Amalekites and the Canaanites will be there in front of you, and you will fall by the sword, inasmuch as you have turned back from following the LORD. And the LORD will not be with you." | 43For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you. | 43The Amalekites and Canaanites are right in front of you, and you will fall by the sword. The LORD won't be with you, since you have turned from following Him." |
Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the LORD's covenant moved from the camp. | 44But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed out of the camp. | 44But they went up heedlessly to the ridge of the hill country; neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses left the camp. | 44But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. | 44But they dared to go up the ridge of the hill country, even though the ark of the LORD's covenant and Moses did not leave the camp. |
Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah. | 45Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them and pursued them, even to Hormah. | 45Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down, and struck them and beat them down as far as Hormah. | 45Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah. | 45Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that part of the hill country came down, attacked them, and routed them as far as Hormah. |
