Salt and Light

(Philippians 2:12-18)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
13"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.13“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.13"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.13"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It's no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men.
14"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.14“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.14"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.14"You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden.
15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.15Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.15nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.15No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house.
16In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.16"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.16In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Jesus Fulfills the Law

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.17"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.17Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.17"Don't assume that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.18For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.18"For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.18For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.18For I assure you: Until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass from the law until all things are accomplished.
19Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.19Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.19"Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.19Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.19Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches people to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.20For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.20"For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.20For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.20For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Anger and Reconciliation

(Luke 12:57-59)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
21"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.'21“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’21"You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER ' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'21Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:21"You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment.
22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, 'Raca,' is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.22But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.22"But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.22But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.22But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. And whoever says to his brother, Fool!' will be subject to the Sanhedrin. But whoever says, You moron!' will be subject to hellfire.
23"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you,23So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,23"Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,23Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;23So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother has something against you,
24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.24leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.24leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.24Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

25"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.25Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison.25"Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.25Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.25Reach a settlement quickly with your adversary while you're on the way with him, or your adversary will hand you over to the judge, the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison.
26Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.26Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.26"Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent.26Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.26I assure you: You will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny!

Adultery

(Leviticus 18:1-30)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
27"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.'27“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’27"You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';27Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:27"You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery.
28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.28But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.28but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.28But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.28But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.29If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.29"If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.29And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
30And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.30"If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.30And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to go into hell!

Divorce

(Deuteronomy 24:1-5; Luke 16:18-18)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
31"It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'31“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’31"It was said, 'WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE';31It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:31"It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce.
32But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.32But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.32but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.32But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.32But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Vows

(Numbers 30:1-16)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
33"Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.'33“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’33"Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.'33Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:33"Again, you have heard that it was said to our ancestors, You must not break your oath, but you must keep your oaths to the Lord.
34But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne;34But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,34"But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,34But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:34But I tell you, don't take an oath at all: either by heaven, because it is God's throne;
35or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.35or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.35or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING.35Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.35or by the earth, because it is His footstool; or by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King.
36And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.36And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.36"Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.36Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.36Neither should you swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black.
37All you need to say is simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.37Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.37"But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes ' or 'No, no'; anything beyond these is of evil.37But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.37But let your word 'yes be 'yes,' and your 'no be 'no.' Anything more than this is from the evil one.

Love Your Enemies

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
38"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'38“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’38"You have heard that it was said, 'AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.'38Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:38"You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
39But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.39But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.39"But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.39But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.39But I tell you, don't resist an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
40And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.40And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.40"If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also.40And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.40As for the one who wants to sue you and take away your shirt, let him have your coat as well.
41If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.41And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.41"Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two.41And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.41And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.42Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.42"Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.42Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.42Give to the one who asks you, and don't turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
43"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'43“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’43"You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.'43Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.43"You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
44But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,44"But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,44But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;44But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
45that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.45so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.45so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.45That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.45so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. For He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?46"For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?46For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?46For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don't even the tax collectors do the same?

47And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?47And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?47"If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?47And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing out of the ordinary? Don't even the Gentiles do the same?
48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.48You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.48"Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.48Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
