The Friends

1  אָ֚נָה (Where) הָלַ֣ךְ (has gone) דּוֹדֵ֔ךְ (your beloved),

הַיָּפָ֖ה (O fairest) בַּנָּשִׁ֑ים (among the women)?

אָ֚נָה (Where) פָּנָ֣ה (has turned aside) דוֹדֵ֔ךְ (your beloved),

וּנְבַקְשֶׁ֖נּוּ (that we may seek him) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with you)?

The Bride

2  דּוֹדִי֙ (My beloved) יָרַ֣ד (has gone) לְגַנּ֔וֹ (to his garden),

לַעֲרוּג֖וֹת (to the beds) הַבֹּ֑שֶׂם (of spice),

לִרְעוֹת֙ (to graze) בַּגַּנִּ֔ים (in the gardens)

וְלִלְקֹ֖ט (and to gather up) שֽׁוֹשַׁנִּֽים׃ (the lilies).

3  אֲנִ֤י (I am) לְדוֹדִי֙ (unto my beloved) וְדוֹדִ֣י (and my beloved is) לִ֔י (unto me);

הָרֹעֶ֖ה (he is grazing) בַּשׁוֹשַׁנִּֽים׃ס (among the lilies).

The Bridegroom

4  יָפָ֨ה (Beautiful) אַ֤תְּ (you are), רַעְיָתִי֙ (my darling), כְּתִרְצָ֔ה (as Tirzah),

נָאוָ֖ה (lovely) כִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (as Jerusalem),

אֲיֻמָּ֖ה (awesome) כַּנִּדְגָּלֽוֹת׃ (as bannered hosts).

5  הָסֵ֤בִּי (Turn away) עֵינַ֙יִךְ֙ (your eyes) מִנֶּגְדִּ֔י (from me),

שֶׁ֥הֵ֖ם (for they) הִרְהִיבֻ֑נִי (have overcome me).

שַׂעְרֵךְ֙ (Your hair is) כְּעֵ֣דֶר (like a flock) הָֽעִזִּ֔ים (of the goats)

שֶׁגָּלְשׁ֖וּ (streaming down) מִן־ (from) הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ (the Gilead).

6  שִׁנַּ֙יִךְ֙ (Your teeth are) כְּעֵ֣דֶר (like a flock) הָֽרְחֵלִ֔ים (of ewes)

שֶׁעָל֖וּ (that have come up) מִן־ (from) הָרַחְצָ֑ה (the washing);

שֶׁכֻּלָּם֙ (each) מַתְאִימ֔וֹת (has its twin),

וְשַׁכֻּלָ֖ה (a bereaved one) אֵ֥ין (and not) בָּהֶֽם׃ (is among them).

7  כְּפֶ֤לַח (Like the halves) הָרִמּוֹן֙ (of the pomegranate) רַקָּתֵ֔ךְ (is your temple)

מִבַּ֖עַד (behind) לְצַמָּתֵֽךְ׃ (your veil).

8  שִׁשִּׁ֥ים (Sixty), הֵ֙מָּה֙ (are they) מְּלָכ֔וֹת (the queens), וּשְׁמֹנִ֖ים (and eighty) פִּֽילַגְשִׁ֑ים (the concubines),

וַעֲלָמ֖וֹת (and maidens) אֵ֥ין (without) מִסְפָּֽר׃ (number).

9  אַחַ֥ת (One) הִיא֙ (she is) יוֹנָתִ֣י (my dove), תַמָּתִ֔י (my perfect one)

אַחַ֥ת (one); הִיא֙ (she is) לְאִמָּ֔הּ (for her mother) בָּרָ֥ה (pure) הִ֖יא (to she) לְיֽוֹלַדְתָּ֑הּ (who bore her).

רָא֤וּהָ (Saw her) בָנוֹת֙ (the daughters) וַֽיְאַשְּׁר֔וּהָ (and called her blessed)—

מְלָכ֥וֹת (the queens) וּפִֽילַגְשִׁ֖ים (and the concubines)— וַֽיְהַלְלֽוּהָ׃ס (and they praised her).

The Friends

10  מִי־ (Who is) זֹ֥את (this) הַנִּשְׁקָפָ֖ה (one shining) כְּמוֹ־ (like) שָׁ֑חַר (the dawn),

יָפָ֣ה (beautiful) כַלְּבָנָ֗ה (as the moon),

בָּרָה֙ (pure) כַּֽחַמָּ֔ה (as the sun),

אֲיֻמָּ֖ה (awesome) כַּנִּדְגָּלֽוֹת׃ס (as bannered hosts)?

The Bridegroom

11  אֶל־ (To) גִּנַּ֤ת (the garden) אֱגוֹז֙ (of the nut tree) יָרַ֔דְתִּי (I went down),

לִרְא֖וֹת (to look) בְּאִבֵּ֣י (on the green) הַנָּ֑חַל (of the valley),

לִרְאוֹת֙ (to see) הֲפָֽרְחָ֣ה (had sprouted) הַגֶּ֔פֶן (the vine)

הֵנֵ֖צוּ (and had bloomed) הָרִמֹּנִֽים׃ (the pomegranates).

12  לֹ֣א (Not) יָדַ֔עְתִּי (did I know it); נַפְשִׁ֣י (my soul) שָׂמַ֔תְנִי (had set me)

מַרְכְּב֖וֹת (among the chariots) עַמִּי־ (of my people) נָדִֽיב׃ (noble).

13  שׁ֤וּבִי (Return), שׁ֙וּבִי֙ (return), הַשּׁ֣וּלַמִּ֔ית (O Shulammite)!

שׁ֥וּבִי (Return), שׁ֖וּבִי (return), וְנֶחֱזֶה־ (that we may gaze) בָּ֑ךְ (on you).

The Bridegroom

מַֽה־ (Why) תֶּחֱזוּ֙ (should you⁺ gaze) בַּשּׁ֣וּלַמִּ֔ית (on the Shulammite)?

כִּמְחֹלַ֖ת (As on dance in) הַֽמַּחֲנָֽיִם׃ (of Mahanaim).
