The Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

1  וַיְהִ֣י (And it came to pass), כִשְׁמֹ֣עַ (when heard) כָּל־ (all) מַלְכֵ֣י (the kings) הָאֱמֹרִ֡י (of the Amorite) אֲשֶׁר֩ (who were) בְּעֵ֨בֶר (on the side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֜ן (of the Jordan) יָ֗מָּה (west), וְכָל־ (and all) מַלְכֵ֤י (the kings) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ (of the Canaanite) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who were) עַל־ (along) הַיָּ֔ם (the sea), אֵ֠ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הוֹבִ֨ישׁ (had dried up) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֵ֧י (the waters) הַיַּרְדֵּ֛ן (of the Jordan) מִפְּנֵ֥י (from before the face) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) עַד־ (until) עָבְרָנוּ (they passed over), וַיִּמַּ֣ס (that melted) לְבָבָ֗ם (their heart), וְלֹא־ (and no) הָ֨יָה (was) בָ֥ם (in them) עוֹד֙ (longer) ר֔וּחַ (a spirit), מִפְּנֵ֖י (because of the face) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (of Israel).

2  בָּעֵ֣ת (At the time) הַהִ֗יא (that) אָמַ֤ר (said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua), עֲשֵׂ֥ה (Make) לְךָ֖ (for yourself) חַֽרְב֣וֹת (knives) צֻרִ֑ים (flint), וְשׁ֛וּב (and turn back) מֹ֥ל (and circumcise) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) שֵׁנִֽית׃ (the second time). 3  וַיַּעַשׂ־ (And made) ל֥וֹ (for himself) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua) חַֽרְב֣וֹת (knives) צֻרִ֑ים (flint), וַיָּ֙מָל֙ (and he circumcised) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (at) גִּבְעַ֖ת (Gibeath-) הָעֲרָלֽוֹת׃ (haaraloth).

4  וְזֶ֥ה (And this is) הַדָּבָ֖ר (the reason) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) מָ֣ל (circumcised them) יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ (Joshua): כָּל־ (All) הָעָ֣ם (the people) הַיֹּצֵא֩ (who came out) מִמִּצְרַ֨יִם (of Egypt) הַזְּכָרִ֜ים (males), כֹּ֣ל׀ (all) אַנְשֵׁ֣י (the men) הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה (of war), מֵ֤תוּ (had died) בַמִּדְבָּר֙ (in the wilderness) בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ (on the way) בְּצֵאתָ֖ם (after they had come out) מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 5  כִּֽי־ (For) מֻלִ֣ים (circumcised) הָי֔וּ (were) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people) הַיֹּֽצְאִ֑ים (who came out), וְכָל־ (and all) הָ֠עָם (the people) הַיִּלֹּדִ֨ים (born) בַּמִּדְבָּ֥ר (in the wilderness) בַּדֶּ֛רֶךְ (on the way) בְּצֵאתָ֥ם (as they came) מִמִּצְרַ֖יִם (out of Egypt) לֹא־ (not) מָֽלוּ׃ (had been circumcised).

6  כִּ֣י׀ (For) אַרְבָּעִ֣ים (forty) שָׁנָ֗ה (years) הָלְכ֣וּ (walked) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ (of Israel) בַּמִּדְבָּר֒ (in the wilderness), עַד־ (until) תֹּ֨ם (were consumed) כָּל־ (all) הַגּ֜וֹי (the people) אַנְשֵׁ֤י (of the men) הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ (of war) הַיֹּצְאִ֣ים (who came out) מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (because) לֹֽא־ (not) שָׁמְע֖וּ (they did obey) בְּק֣וֹל (the voice) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) נִשְׁבַּ֤ע (swore) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לָהֶ֔ם (to them) לְבִלְתִּ֞י (that not) הַרְאוֹתָ֣ם (He would show them) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) נִשְׁבַּ֨ע (had sworn) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) לַֽאֲבוֹתָם֙ (to their fathers) לָ֣תֶת (that He would give) לָ֔נוּ (to us), אֶ֛רֶץ (a land) זָבַ֥ת (flowing) חָלָ֖ב (with milk) וּדְבָֽשׁ׃ (and honey). 7  וְאֶת־ (And) בְּנֵיהֶם֙ (their sons) הֵקִ֣ים (He raised up) תַּחְתָּ֔ם (in their place) אֹתָ֖ם (-) מָ֣ל (circumcised) יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ (Joshua); כִּי־ (for) עֲרֵלִ֣ים (uncircumcised) הָי֔וּ (they were), כִּ֛י (because) לֹא־ (not) מָ֥לוּ (they had been circumcised) אוֹתָ֖ם (-) בַּדָּֽרֶךְ׃ (on the way).

8  וַיְהִ֛י (And it came to pass), כַּאֲשֶׁר־ (when) תַּ֥מּוּ (they had finished) כָל־ (all) הַגּ֖וֹי (the nation) לְהִמּ֑וֹל (circumcising), וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ (that they stayed) תַחְתָּ֛ם (in their places) בַּֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה (in the camp) עַ֥ד (until) חֲיוֹתָֽם׃פ (they were healed).

9  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua), הַיּ֗וֹם (Today) גַּלּ֛וֹתִי (I have rolled away) אֶת־ (-) חֶרְפַּ֥ת (the reproach) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) מֵעֲלֵיכֶ֑ם (from you⁺). וַיִּקְרָ֞א (And is called) שֵׁ֣ם (the name) הַמָּק֤וֹם (of place) הַהוּא֙ (that) גִּלְגָּ֔ל (Gilgal) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

10  וַיַּחֲנ֥וּ (And camped) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בַּגִּלְגָּ֑ל (in Gilgal) וַיַּעֲשׂ֣וּ (and kept) אֶת־ (-) הַפֶּ֡סַח (the Passover) בְּאַרְבָּעָה֩ (on the four) עָשָׂ֨ר (and tenth) י֥וֹם (day) לַחֹ֛דֶשׁ (of the month) בָּעֶ֖רֶב (in the evening) בְּעַֽרְב֥וֹת (on the plains) יְרִיחֽוֹ׃ (of Jericho). 11  וַיֹּ֨אכְל֜וּ (And they ate) מֵעֲב֥וּר (of the produce) הָאָ֛רֶץ (of the land) מִמָּֽחֳרַ֥ת (on the day after) הַפֶּ֖סַח (the Passover), מַצּ֣וֹת (unleavened bread), וְקָל֑וּי (and roasted grain) בְּעֶ֖צֶם (on the same) הַיּ֥וֹם (day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

12  וַיִּשְׁבֹּ֨ת (And ceased) הַמָּ֜ן (the manna) מִֽמָּחֳרָ֗ת (on the day) בְּאָכְלָם֙ (after they had eaten) מֵעֲב֣וּר (from the produce) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land), וְלֹא־ (and not) הָ֥יָה (had) ע֛וֹד (anymore) לִבְנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) מָ֑ן (manna), וַיֹּאכְל֗וּ (and they ate) מִתְּבוּאַת֙ (the food) אֶ֣רֶץ (of the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan) בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה (in the year) הַהִֽיא׃ס (that).

The Commander of Yahweh’s Army

13  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), בִּֽהְי֣וֹת (in being) יְהוֹשֻׁעַ֮ (Joshua) בִּירִיחוֹ֒ (by Jericho), וַיִּשָּׂ֤א (that he lifted) עֵינָיו֙ (his eyes) וַיַּ֔רְא (and looked), וְהִנֵּה־ (and behold), אִישׁ֙ (a man) עֹמֵ֣ד (stood) לְנֶגְדּ֔וֹ (to opposite him) וְחַרְבּ֥וֹ (and with His sword) שְׁלוּפָ֖ה (drawn) בְּיָד֑וֹ (in His hand), וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ (and went) יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ (Joshua) אֵלָיו֙ (to Him), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) ל֔וֹ (to Him) הֲלָ֥נוּ (For us) אַתָּ֖ה (are You), אִם־ (or) לְצָרֵֽינוּ׃ (for our enemies)?

14  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ (And He said), לֹ֗א (Neither), כִּ֛י (for) אֲנִ֥י (I), שַׂר־ (Commander) צְבָֽא־ (of the army) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), עַתָּ֣ה (now) בָ֑אתִי (have come).

וַיִּפֹּל֩ (And fell) יְהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ (Joshua) אֶל־ (on) פָּנָ֥יו (his face) אַ֙רְצָה֙ (to the earth), וַיִּשְׁתָּ֔חוּ (and worshiped), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) ל֔וֹ (to Him), מָ֥ה (What) אֲדֹנִ֖י (my Lord) מְדַבֵּ֥ר (does say) אֶל־ (to) עַבְדּֽוֹ׃ (His servant)?

15  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) שַׂר־ (the Commander) צְבָ֨א (of army) יְהוָ֜ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ (Joshua), שַׁל־ (Take) נַֽעַלְךָ֙ (your sandal) מֵעַ֣ל (off) רַגְלֶ֔ךָ (your foot), כִּ֣י (for) הַמָּק֗וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (where) אַתָּ֛ה (you) עֹמֵ֥ד (are standing) עָלָ֖יו (on it), קֹ֣דֶשׁ (holy) ה֑וּא (is).

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And did) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua) כֵּֽן׃ (so).
