The Walls of Jericho

1  וִֽירִיחוֹ֙ (And Jericho) סֹגֶ֣רֶת (being shut) וּמְסֻגֶּ֔רֶת (was shut up) מִפְּנֵ֖י (because) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel). אֵ֥ין (None) יוֹצֵ֖א (went out), וְאֵ֥ין (and none) בָּֽא׃ס (came in).

2  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua), רְאֵה֙ (See), נָתַ֣תִּי (I have given) בְיָֽדְךָ֔ (into your hand) אֶת־ (-) יְרִיח֖וֹ (Jericho) וְאֶת־ (and) מַלְכָּ֑הּ (its king)— גִּבּוֹרֵ֖י (mighty) הֶחָֽיִל׃ (ones of valor). 3  וְסַבֹּתֶ֣ם (And you⁺ shall march around) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֗יר (the city), כֹּ֚ל (all) אַנְשֵׁ֣י (you men) הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (of war), הַקֵּ֥יף (going all around) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֖יר (the city) פַּ֣עַם (time) אֶחָ֑ת (one). כֹּ֥ה (This) תַעֲשֶׂ֖ה (you shall do) שֵׁ֥שֶׁת (for six) יָמִֽים׃ (days). 4  וְשִׁבְעָ֣ה (And seven) כֹהֲנִ֡ים (priests) יִשְׂאוּ֩ (shall bear) שִׁבְעָ֨ה (seven) שׁוֹפְר֤וֹת (shofars) הַיּֽוֹבְלִים֙ (of the rams) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face) הָאָר֔וֹן (of the ark). וּבַיּוֹם֙ (And the day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י (seventh) תָּסֹ֥בּוּ (you⁺ shall march around) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֖יר (the city) שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) פְּעָמִ֑ים (times), וְהַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (and the priests) יִתְקְע֖וּ (shall blow) בַּשּׁוֹפָרֽוֹת׃ (on the shofars). 5  וְהָיָ֞ה (And it shall come to pass), בִּמְשֹׁ֣ךְ׀ (when they make a long blast) בְּקֶ֣רֶן (with the horn) הַיּוֹבֵ֗ל (of the ram), בְּשָׁמְעֲכֶם (in your⁺ hearing) אֶת־ (-) ק֣וֹל (the voice) הַשּׁוֹפָ֔ר (of the shofar), יָרִ֥יעוּ (that shall shout) כָל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people) תְּרוּעָ֣ה (with a shout) גְדוֹלָ֑ה (great). וְנָ֨פְלָ֜ה (And shall fall down) חוֹמַ֤ת (the wall) הָעִיר֙ (of the city) תַּחְתֶּ֔יהָ (flat), וְעָל֥וּ (and will go up) הָעָ֖ם (the people) אִ֥ישׁ (every man) נֶגְדּֽוֹ׃ (straight before him).

6  וַיִּקְרָ֞א (And called) יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ (Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נוּן֙ (of Nun) אֶל־ (to) הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (the priests) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them), שְׂא֖וּ (Take up) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֣וֹן (the ark) הַבְּרִ֑ית (of the covenant), וְשִׁבְעָ֣ה (and seven) כֹֽהֲנִ֗ים (priests) יִשְׂאוּ֙ (let bear) שִׁבְעָ֤ה (seven) שֽׁוֹפְרוֹת֙ (shofars) יוֹבְלִ֔ים (of rams) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the face) אֲר֥וֹן (of the ark) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

7  וַיֹּאמְרוּ (And he said) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֔ם (the people), עִבְר֖וּ (Pass over) וְסֹ֣בּוּ (and march around) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֑יר (the city), וְהֶ֣חָל֔וּץ (and let him who is armed) יַעֲבֹ֕ר (advance) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the face) אֲר֥וֹן (of the ark) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

8  וַיְהִ֗י (And it was), כֶּאֱמֹ֣ר (when had spoken) יְהוֹשֻׁעַ֮ (Joshua) אֶל־ (to) הָעָם֒ (the people), וְשִׁבְעָ֣ה (that the seven) הַכֹּהֲנִ֡ים (priests) נֹשְׂאִים֩ (bearing) שִׁבְעָ֨ה (seven) שׁוֹפְר֤וֹת (shofars) הַיּֽוֹבְלִים֙ (of the rams) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), עָבְר֕וּ (passed over) וְתָקְע֖וּ (and blew) בַּשּֽׁוֹפָר֑וֹת (on the shofars)— וַֽאֲרוֹן֙ (and the ark) בְּרִ֣ית (of the covenant) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) הֹלֵ֖ךְ (followed) אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃ (them). 9  וְהֶחָל֣וּץ (And the armed ones) הֹלֵ֔ךְ (went) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (the priests) תָּקְעוּ (who blew) הַשּֽׁוֹפָר֑וֹת (the shofars), וְהַֽמְאַסֵּ֗ף (and the rear guard) הֹלֵךְ֙ (came) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) הָאָר֔וֹן (the ark)— הָל֖וֹךְ (going on) וְתָק֥וֹעַ (and blowing) בַּשּׁוֹפָרֽוֹת׃ (on the shofars).

10  וְאֶת־ (And) הָעָם֩ (the people) צִוָּ֨ה (had commanded) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), לֹ֤א (Not) תָרִ֙יעוּ֙ (you⁺ shall shout), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תַשְׁמִ֣יעוּ (make heard) אֶת־ (-) קוֹלְכֶ֔ם (your⁺ voice), וְלֹא־ (and not) יֵצֵ֥א (shall proceed out) מִפִּיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ mouth) דָּבָ֑ר (a word) עַ֠ד (until) י֣וֹם (the day) אָמְרִ֧י (I say) אֲלֵיכֶ֛ם (to you⁺) הָרִ֖יעוּ (to shout). וַהֲרִיעֹתֶֽם׃ (Then you⁺ shall shout). 11  וַיַּסֵּ֤ב (And compassed) אֲרוֹן־ (the ark) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֔יר (the city), הַקֵּ֖ף (going around it) פַּ֣עַם (time) אֶחָ֑ת (one), וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (and they came into) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה (the camp) וַיָּלִ֖ינוּ (and lodged) בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃פ (in the camp).

12  וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֥ם (And rose early) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua) בַּבֹּ֑קֶר (in the morning), וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ (and took up) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (the priests) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֥וֹן (the ark) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 13  וְשִׁבְעָ֣ה (And the seven) הַכֹּהֲנִ֡ים (priests) נֹשְׂאִים֩ (bearing) שִׁבְעָ֨ה (seven) שׁוֹפְר֜וֹת (shofars) הַיֹּבְלִ֗ים (of the rams) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) אֲר֣וֹן (the ark) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) הֹלְכִ֣ים (marching) הָל֔וֹךְ (marched) וְתָקְע֖וּ (and blowing) בַּשּׁוֹפָר֑וֹת (on the shofars)— וְהֶחָלוּץ֙ (and the armed men) הֹלֵ֣ךְ (went) לִפְנֵיהֶ֔ם (before their faces), וְהַֽמְאַסֵּ֗ף (and the rear guard) הֹלֵךְ֙ (came) אַֽחֲרֵי֙ (after) אֲר֣וֹן (the ark) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH)— הוֹלֵךְ (going on) וְתָק֥וֹעַ (and blowing) בַּשּׁוֹפָרֽוֹת׃ (on the shofars). 14  וַיָּסֹ֨בּוּ (And they marched around) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֜יר (the city) בַּיּ֤וֹם (the day) הַשֵּׁנִי֙ (second) פַּ֣עַם (time) אַחַ֔ת (one), וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ (and returned) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה (to the camp). כֹּ֥ה (Thus) עָשׂ֖וּ (they did) שֵׁ֥שֶׁת (for six) יָמִֽים׃ (days).

15  וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י (seventh), וַיַּשְׁכִּ֙מוּ֙ (that they rose early) כַּעֲל֣וֹת (about the dawning) הַשַּׁ֔חַר (of the day) וַיָּסֹ֧בּוּ (and marched around) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֛יר (the city) כַּמִּשְׁפָּ֥ט (in the manner) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) פְּעָמִ֑ים (times); רַ֚ק (only) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on day) הַה֔וּא (that) סָבְב֥וּ (they marched around) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֖יר (the city) שֶׁ֥בַע (seven) פְּעָמִֽים׃ (times). 16  וַיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) בַּפַּ֣עַם (the time) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔ית (seventh) תָּקְע֥וּ (having blown) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (the priests) בַּשּׁוֹפָר֑וֹת (on the shofars), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (that said) יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ (Joshua) אֶל־ (to) הָעָם֙ (the people), הָרִ֔יעוּ (Shout)! כִּֽי־ (For) נָתַ֧ן (has given) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) הָעִֽיר׃ (the city). 17  וְהָיְתָ֨ה (And shall be) הָעִ֥יר (the city) חֵ֛רֶם (devoted to destruction), הִ֥יא (it) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) בָּ֖הּ (are in it), לַֽיהוָ֑ה (by YHWH). רַק֩ (Only) רָחָ֨ב (Rahab) הַזּוֹנָ֜ה (the prostitute) תִּֽחְיֶ֗ה (shall live), הִ֚יא (she) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who are) אִתָּ֣הּ (with her) בַּבַּ֔יִת (in the house), כִּ֣י (because) הֶחְבְּאַ֔תָה (she hid) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּלְאָכִ֖ים (the messengers) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) שָׁלָֽחְנוּ׃ (we sent). 18  וְרַק־ (And surely) אַתֶּם֙ (you⁺), שִׁמְר֣וּ (keep away) מִן־ (from) הַחֵ֔רֶם (a devoted thing), פֶּֽן־ (lest) תַּחֲרִ֖ימוּ (you⁺ become accursed), וּלְקַחְתֶּ֣ם (and you⁺ take) מִן־ (from) הַחֵ֑רֶם (a devoted thing), וְשַׂמְתֶּ֞ם (and make) אֶת־ (-) מַחֲנֵ֤ה (the camp) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) לְחֵ֔רֶם (a curse), וַעֲכַרְתֶּ֖ם (and trouble) אוֹתֽוֹ׃ (it). 19  וְכֹ֣ל׀ (And all) כֶּ֣סֶף (the silver), וְזָהָ֗ב (and gold), וּכְלֵ֤י (and vessels) נְחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ (of bronze) וּבַרְזֶ֔ל (and iron), קֹ֥דֶשׁ (holy) ה֖וּא (it is) לַֽיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH). אוֹצַ֥ר (Into the treasury) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) יָבֽוֹא׃ (It shall enter).

20  וַיָּ֣רַע (And shouted) הָעָ֔ם (the people). וַֽיִּתְקְע֖וּ (And they blew) בַּשֹּֽׁפָר֑וֹת (on the shofars), וַיְהִי֩ (and it came to pass), כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ (when heard) הָעָ֜ם (the people) אֶת־ (-) ק֣וֹל (the voice) הַשּׁוֹפָ֗ר (of the shofar) וַיָּרִ֤יעוּ (and shouted) הָעָם֙ (the people) תְּרוּעָ֣ה (with a shout) גְדוֹלָ֔ה (great), וַתִּפֹּ֨ל (that fell down) הַֽחוֹמָ֜ה (the wall) תַּחְתֶּ֗יהָ (flat). וַיַּ֨עַל (And went up) הָעָ֤ם (the people) הָעִ֙ירָה֙ (into the city), אִ֣ישׁ (a man) נֶגְדּ֔וֹ (straight before him), וַֽיִּלְכְּד֖וּ (and they took) אֶת־ (-) הָעִֽיר׃ (the city). 21  וַֽיַּחֲרִ֙ימוּ֙ (And they devoted to destruction) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בָּעִ֔יר (in the city)— מֵאִישׁ֙ (from man) וְעַד־ (and to) אִשָּׁ֔ה (woman), מִנַּ֖עַר (from young) וְעַד־ (and to) זָקֵ֑ן (old), וְעַ֨ד (and) שׁ֥וֹר (ox), וָשֶׂ֛ה (and sheep), וַחֲמ֖וֹר (and donkey)— לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חָֽרֶב׃ (of the sword).

22  וְלִשְׁנַ֨יִם (And to the two) הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים (men) הַֽמְרַגְּלִ֤ים (who had spied out) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the country), אָמַ֣ר (had said) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua), בֹּ֖אוּ (Go into) בֵּית־ (the house) הָאִשָּׁ֣ה (of the woman), הַזּוֹנָ֑ה (the prostitute), וְהוֹצִ֨יאוּ (and bring out) מִשָּׁ֤ם (from there) אֶת־ (-) הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ (the woman) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) לָ֔הּ (unto her), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) נִשְׁבַּעְתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ swore) לָֽהּ׃ (to her). 23  וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ (And went in) הַנְּעָרִ֣ים (the young men) הַֽמְרַגְּלִ֗ים (who had been spies), וַיֹּצִ֡יאוּ (and brought out) אֶת־ (-) רָ֠חָב (Rahab), וְאֶת־ (and) אָבִ֨יהָ (her father), וְאֶת־ (and) אִמָּ֤הּ (her mother), וְאֶת־ (and) אַחֶ֙יהָ֙ (her brothers), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) לָ֔הּ (unto her). וְאֵ֥ת (And) כָּל־ (all) מִשְׁפְּחוֹתֶ֖יהָ (her relatives) הוֹצִ֑יאוּ (they brought out) וַיַּ֨נִּיח֔וּם (and placed them at) מִח֖וּץ (the outside) לְמַחֲנֵ֥ה (of the camp) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

24  וְהָעִ֛יר (And the city) שָׂרְפ֥וּ (they burned) בָאֵ֖שׁ (with the fire), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) בָּ֑הּ (in it). רַ֣ק׀ (Only) הַכֶּ֣סֶף (the silver), וְהַזָּהָ֗ב (and the gold), וּכְלֵ֤י (and the vessels) הַנְּחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ (of the bronze) וְהַבַּרְזֶ֔ל (and the iron) נָתְנ֖וּ (they put) אוֹצַ֥ר (into the treasury) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 25  וְֽאֶת־ (And) רָחָ֣ב (Rahab) הַ֠זּוֹנָה (the prostitute) וְאֶת־ (and) בֵּ֨ית (and the house) אָבִ֤יהָ (of her father), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) לָהּ֙ (belonged to her) הֶחֱיָ֣ה (spared) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua); וַתֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ (and she dwells) בְּקֶ֣רֶב (in the midst) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֣וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), כִּ֤י (because) הֶחְבִּ֙יאָה֙ (she hid) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים (the messengers) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) שָׁלַ֥ח (had sent) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua) לְרַגֵּ֥ל (to spy out) אֶת־ (-) יְרִיחֽוֹ׃פ (Jericho).

26  וַיַּשְׁבַּ֣ע (And charged them) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִ֖יא (that), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying),

אָר֨וּר (Cursed be) הָאִ֜ישׁ (the man) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH)

אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) יָקוּם֙ (rises up) וּבָנָ֞ה (and builds) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֤יר (the city) הַזֹּאת֙ (this), אֶת־ (-) יְרִיח֔וֹ (Jericho).

בִּבְכֹר֣וֹ (With his firstborn)

יְיַסְּדֶ֔נָּה (he shall lay its foundation)

וּבִצְעִיר֖וֹ (and with his youngest)

יַצִּ֥יב (shall he set up) דְּלָתֶֽיהָ׃ (its gates).

27  וַיְהִ֥י (And was) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (with) יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ (Joshua), וַיְהִ֥י (and spread) שָׁמְע֖וֹ (his fame) בְּכָל־ (throughout all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land).
