Joel 1

The Invasion of Locusts

1  דְּבַר־ (The word) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הָיָ֔ה (came) אֶל־ (to) יוֹאֵ֖ל (Joel) בֶּן־ (son) פְּתוּאֵֽל׃ (of Pethuel).

2  שִׁמְעוּ־ (Hear) זֹאת֙ (this), הַזְּקֵנִ֔ים (O elders),

וְהַֽאֲזִ֔ינוּ (and give ear), כֹּ֖ל (all) יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י (dwellers) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the land).

הֶהָ֤יְתָה (Has there come to be) זֹּאת֙ (this) בִּֽימֵיכֶ֔ם (in your⁺ days),

וְאִ֖ם (or even) בִּימֵ֥י (in the days) אֲבֹֽתֵיכֶֽם׃ (of your⁺ fathers)?

3  עָלֶ֖יהָ (Of it) לִבְנֵיכֶ֣ם (to your⁺ sons) סַפֵּ֑רוּ (give account)

וּבְנֵיכֶם֙ (and your⁺ sons) לִבְנֵיהֶ֔ם (to their sons),

וּבְנֵיהֶ֖ם (and their sons) לְד֥וֹר (to the generation) אַחֵֽר׃ (after).

4  יֶ֤תֶר (The remainder) הַגָּזָם֙ (of the devouring locust)

אָכַ֣ל (has eaten); הָֽאַרְבֶּ֔ה (the swarming locust)

וְיֶ֥תֶר (and the remainder) הָאַרְבֶּ֖ה (of the swarming locust)

אָכַ֣ל (has eaten); הַיָּ֑לֶק (the crawling locust)

וְיֶ֣תֶר (and the remainder) הַיֶּ֔לֶק (of the young locust)

אָכַ֖ל (has eaten) הֶחָסִֽיל׃ (the consuming locust).

5  הָקִ֤יצוּ (Wake up), שִׁכּוֹרִים֙ (O drunkards), וּבְכ֔וּ (and weep);

וְהֵילִ֖לוּ (and wail), כָּל־ (all) שֹׁ֣תֵי (drinkers) יָ֑יִן (of wine),

עַל־ (over) עָסִ֕יס (the new wine);

כִּ֥י (for) נִכְרַ֖ת (it has been cut off) מִפִּיכֶֽם׃ (from your⁺ mouth).

6  כִּֽי־ (For) גוֹי֙ (a nation) עָלָ֣ה (has come up) עַל־ (against) אַרְצִ֔י (My land),

עָצ֖וּם (strong), וְאֵ֣ין (and without) מִסְפָּ֑ר (number),

שִׁנָּיו֙ (his teeth are) שִׁנֵּ֣י (the teeth) אַרְיֵ֔ה (of a lion),

וּֽמְתַלְּע֥וֹת (and the fangs) לָבִ֖יא (of a fierce lion) לֽוֹ׃ (are unto him).

7  שָׂ֤ם (He has set) גַּפְנִי֙ (My vine) לְשַׁמָּ֔ה (to waste),

וּתְאֵנָתִ֖י (and My fig tree); לִקְצָפָ֑ה (to splinter)

חָשֹׂ֤ף (stripping) חֲשָׂפָהּ֙ (he has stripped off the bark), וְהִשְׁלִ֔יךְ (and thrown it away);

הִלְבִּ֖ינוּ (have become white) שָׂרִיגֶֽיהָ׃ (its branches).

A Call to Mourning

8  אֱלִ֕י (Lament) כִּבְתוּלָ֥ה (like a virgin) חֲגֻֽרַת־ (girded with) שַׂ֖ק (sackcloth)

עַל־ (over) בַּ֥עַל (the husband) נְעוּרֶֽיהָ׃ (of her youth).

9  הָכְרַ֥ת (Have been cut off) מִנְחָ֛ה (the grain offering) וָנֶ֖סֶךְ (and the drink offering)

מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH);

אָֽבְלוּ֙ (mourn). הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (The priests),

מְשָׁרְתֵ֖י (those ministering to), יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

10  שֻׁדַּ֣ד (Is ruined), שָׂדֶ֔ה (the field)

אָבְלָ֖ה (and mourns); אֲדָמָ֑ה (the land)

כִּ֚י (for) שֻׁדַּ֣ד (is ruined), דָּגָ֔ן (the grain)

הוֹבִ֥ישׁ (is dried up), תִּיר֖וֹשׁ (the new wine) אֻמְלַ֥ל (languishes) יִצְהָֽר׃ (the oil).

11  הֹבִ֣ישׁוּ (Be ashamed), אִכָּרִ֗ים (O farmers);

הֵילִ֙ילוּ֙ (wail), כֹּֽרְמִ֔ים (O vinedressers),

עַל־ (over) חִטָּ֖ה (the wheat) וְעַל־ (and over) שְׂעֹרָ֑ה (the barley);

כִּ֥י (because) אָבַ֖ד (has perished) קְצִ֥יר (the harvest) שָׂדֶֽה׃ (of the field).

12  הַגֶּ֣פֶן (The vine) הוֹבִ֔ישָׁה (has withered),

וְהַתְּאֵנָ֖ה (and the fig tree) אֻמְלָ֑לָה (has languished);

רִמּ֞וֹן (the pomegranate), גַּם־ (also), תָּמָ֣ר (the palm tree) וְתַפּ֗וּחַ (and the apple tree),

כָּל־ (all) עֲצֵ֤י (the trees) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (of the field), יָבֵ֔שׁוּ (have dried up);

כִּֽי־ (for) הֹבִ֥ישׁ (has withered away) שָׂשׂ֖וֹן (the joy) מִן־ (of) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) אָדָֽם׃ס (of man).

A Call to Repentance
(Amos 5:4–15; Zephaniah 2:1–3; Luke 13:1–5)

13  חִגְר֨וּ (Gird yourselves) וְסִפְד֜וּ (and lament), הַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים (O priests);

הֵילִ֙ילוּ֙ (wail), מְשָׁרְתֵ֣י (you ministering before) מִזְבֵּ֔חַ (the altar)!

בֹּ֚אוּ (Come), לִ֣ינוּ (lodge) בַשַּׂקִּ֔ים (in sackcloth),

מְשָׁרְתֵ֖י (you ministering before) אֱלֹהָ֑י (my God),

כִּ֥י (for) נִמְנַ֛ע (it is withheld) מִבֵּ֥ית (from the house) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ God)

מִנְחָ֥ה (the grain offering) וָנָֽסֶךְ׃ (and the drink offering).

14  קַדְּשׁוּ־ (Consecrate) צוֹם֙ (a fast),

קִרְא֣וּ (call) עֲצָרָ֔ה (a solemn assembly),

אִסְפ֣וּ (Gather) זְקֵנִ֗ים (the elders)

כֹּ֚ל (and all) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land)

בֵּ֖ית (to the house) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ God),

וְזַעֲק֖וּ (and cry out) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH),

15  אֲהָ֖הּ (Alas) לַיּ֑וֹם (for the day)!

כִּ֤י (For) קָרוֹב֙ (is near), י֣וֹם (the day) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH)

וּכְשֹׁ֖ד (and as destruction) מִשַׁדַּ֥י (from Shaddai)

יָבֽוֹא׃ (it shall come).

16  הֲל֛וֹא (Has not) נֶ֥גֶד (before) עֵינֵ֖ינוּ (our eyes),

אֹ֣כֶל (the food) נִכְרָ֑ת (been cut off)

מִבֵּ֥ית (from the house) אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (of our God)?

שִׂמְחָ֥ה (Joy) וָגִֽיל׃ (and rejoicing).

17  עָבְשׁ֣וּ (Shrivels) פְרֻד֗וֹת (the seed) תַּ֚חַת (under) מֶגְרְפֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם (their clods),

נָשַׁ֙מּוּ֙ (are desolate), אֹֽצָר֔וֹת (the storehouses)

נֶהֶרְס֖וּ (are torn down); מַמְּגֻר֑וֹת (the granaries)

כִּ֥י (for) הֹבִ֖ישׁ (has withered) דָּגָֽן׃ (the grain).

18  מַה־ (How) נֶּאֶנְחָ֣ה (groan)! בְהֵמָ֗ה (The cattle)

נָבֹ֙כוּ֙ (are perplexed), עֶדְרֵ֣י (the herds) בָקָ֔ר (of cattle)

כִּ֛י (because) אֵ֥ין (there is no) מִרְעֶ֖ה (pasture); לָהֶ֑ם (unto them)

גַּם־ (even), עֶדְרֵ֥י (the flocks) הַצֹּ֖אן (of the sheep) נֶאְשָֽׁמוּ׃ (suffer punishment).

19  אֵלֶ֥יךָ (To You) יְהוָ֖ה (O YHWH), אֶקְרָ֑א (I call out);

כִּ֣י (for) אֵ֗שׁ (fire) אָֽכְלָה֙ (has devoured) נְא֣וֹת (the pastures) מִדְבָּ֔ר (of the wilderness),

וְלֶ֣הָבָ֔ה (and a flame) לִהֲטָ֖ה (has burned) כָּל־ (all) עֲצֵ֥י (the trees) הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ (of the field).

20  גַּם־ (Even) בַּהֲמ֥וֹת (the beasts) שָׂדֶ֖ה (of the field) תַּעֲר֣וֹג (pant) אֵלֶ֑יךָ (for You)

כִּ֤י (for) יָֽבְשׁוּ֙ (have dried up), אֲפִ֣יקֵי (the channels) מָ֔יִם (of water)

וְאֵ֕שׁ (and fire) אָכְלָ֖ה (has devoured) נְא֥וֹת (the pastures) הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃פ (of the wilderness).
