Israel’s Adultery Rebuked

1  אִמְר֥וּ (Say) לַאֲחֵיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ brothers), עַמִּ֑י (Ammi);

וְלַאֲחֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (and of your⁺ sisters), רֻחָֽמָה׃ (Ruhamah).

2  רִ֤יבוּ (Plead) בְאִמְּכֶם֙ (with your⁺ mother),

רִ֔יבוּ (plead),

כִּֽי־ (for) הִיא֙ (she is) לֹ֣א (not) אִשְׁתִּ֔י (My wife),

וְאָנֹכִ֖י (and I am) לֹ֣א (not) אִישָׁ֑הּ (her Husband);

וְתָסֵ֤ר (that she might turn aside) זְנוּנֶ֙יהָ֙ (her prostitution) מִפָּנֶ֔יה (from her face),

וְנַאֲפוּפֶ֖יהָ (and her adultery) מִבֵּ֥ין (from between) שָׁדֶֽיהָ׃ (her breasts);

3  פֶּן־ (lest) אַפְשִׁיטֶ֣נָּה (I strip her) עֲרֻמָּ֔ה (naked),

וְהִ֨צַּגְתִּ֔יהָ (and expose her) כְּי֖וֹם (like the day) הִוָּֽלְדָ֑הּ (of her being born),

וְשַׂמְתִּ֣יהָ (and make her) כַמִּדְבָּ֗ר (like the desert),

וְשַׁתִּ֙הָ֙ (and set her) כְּאֶ֣רֶץ (like a land), צִיָּ֔ה (parched)

וַהֲמִתִּ֖יהָ (and kill her) בַּצָּמָֽא׃ (with thirst).

4  וְאֶת־ (And) בָּנֶ֖יהָ (to her children); לֹ֣א (not) אֲרַחֵ֑ם (will I show compassion)

כִּֽי־ (for) בְנֵ֥י (sons) זְנוּנִ֖ים (of prostitution) הֵֽמָּה׃ (they are).

5  כִּ֤י (For) זָֽנְתָה֙ (has been a prostitute); אִמָּ֔ם (their mother)

הֹבִ֖ישָׁה (has acted shamefully) הֽוֹרָתָ֑ם (she who conceived them)

כִּ֣י (for) אָמְרָ֗ה (she said),

אֵלְכָ֞ה (I will go) אַחֲרֵ֤י (after) מְאַהֲבַי֙ (my lovers),

נֹתְנֵ֤י (those giving me) לַחְמִי֙ (my bread) וּמֵימַ֔י (and my water),

צַמְרִ֣י (my wool) וּפִשְׁתִּ֔י (and my linen), שַׁמְנִ֖י (my oil) וְשִׁקּוּיָֽי׃ (and my drink).

6  לָכֵ֛ן (Therefore), הִנְנִי־ (behold, I)

שָׂ֥ךְ (I am hedging up) אֶת־ (-) דַּרְכֵּ֖ךְ (your path) בַּסִּירִ֑ים (with thorns),

וְגָֽדַרְתִּי֙ (and I will wall up) אֶת־ (-) גְּדֵרָ֔הּ (her with a wall)

וּנְתִיבוֹתֶ֖יהָ (so her paths) לֹ֥א (not) תִמְצָֽא׃ (can she find).

7  וְרִדְּפָ֤ה (And she will pursue) אֶת־ (-) מְאַהֲבֶ֙יהָ֙ (her lovers), וְלֹֽא־ (not) תַשִּׂ֣יג (will she overtake) אֹתָ֔ם (them)

וּבִקְשָׁ֖תַם (and she will seek them) וְלֹ֣א (not) תִמְצָ֑א (will she find them)

וְאָמְרָ֗ה (and she will say),

אֵלְכָ֤ה (I will go) וְאָשׁ֙וּבָה֙ (and return) אֶל־ (to) אִישִׁ֣י (my husband); הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן (first)

כִּ֣י (for) ט֥וֹב (it was better) לִ֛י (for me) אָ֖ז (then) מֵעָֽתָּה׃ (than now).

8  וְהִיא֙ (And she) לֹ֣א (not) יָֽדְעָ֔ה (did know)

כִּ֤י (that) אָֽנֹכִי֙ (I) נָתַ֣תִּי (gave) לָ֔הּ (to her) הַדָּגָ֖ן (the grain),

וְהַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ (and the new wine), וְהַיִּצְהָ֑ר (and the oil),

וְכֶ֨סֶף (and silver) הִרְבֵּ֥יתִי (multiplied) לָ֛הּ (for her) וְזָהָ֖ב (and gold),

עָשׂ֥וּ (which they prepared) לַבָּֽעַל׃ (for Baal).

9  לָכֵ֣ן (Therefore) אָשׁ֔וּב (I will return), וְלָקַחְתִּ֤י (and I will take away) דְגָנִי֙ (My grain) בְּעִתּ֔וֹ (in its time)

וְתִירוֹשִׁ֖י (and My new wine) בְּמֽוֹעֲד֑וֹ (in its appointed time)

וְהִצַּלְתִּי֙ (and I will snatch away) צַמְרִ֣י (My wool) וּפִשְׁתִּ֔י (and My linen)

לְכַסּ֖וֹת (to cover) אֶת־ (-) עֶרְוָתָֽהּ׃ (her nakedness).

10  וְעַתָּ֛ה (And now) אֲגַלֶּ֥ה (I will uncover) אֶת־ (-) נַבְלֻתָ֖הּ (her lewdness)

לְעֵינֵ֣י (before the eyes) מְאַהֲבֶ֑יהָ (of her lovers),

וְאִ֖ישׁ (and man) לֹֽא־ (not) יַצִּילֶ֥נָּה (will deliver her)

מִיָּדִֽי׃ (from My hand).

11  וְהִשְׁבַּתִּי֙ (And I will make cease), כָּל־ (all) מְשׂוֹשָׂ֔הּ (her rejoicing)

חַגָּ֖הּ (her feast), חָדְשָׁ֣הּ (her New Moon), וְשַׁבַּתָּ֑הּ (and her Sabbath),

וְכֹ֖ל (and all) מוֹעֲדָֽהּ׃ (her appointed times).

12  וַהֲשִׁמֹּתִ֗י (And I will destroy) גַּפְנָהּ֙ (her vines) וּתְאֵ֣נָתָ֔הּ (and her fig trees),

אֲשֶׁ֣ר (of of which) אָמְרָ֗ה (she has said), אֶתְנָ֥ה (My wages) הֵ֙מָּה֙ (they are) לִ֔י (for me) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that which) נָֽתְנוּ־ (have given) לִ֖י (to me) מְאַֽהֲבָ֑י (my lovers)

וְשַׂמְתִּ֣ים (I will make them) לְיַ֔עַר (a forest),

וַאֲכָלָ֖תַם (and will devour them) חַיַּ֥ת (the beasts) הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ (of the field).

13  וּפָקַדְתִּ֣י (And I will visit punishment) עָלֶ֗יהָ (on her) אֶת־ (-) יְמֵ֤י (for the days) הַבְּעָלִים֙ (of the Baals),

אֲשֶׁ֣ר (for which) תַּקְטִ֣יר (she burned incense) לָהֶ֔ם (to them)

וַתַּ֤עַד (and adorned herself) נִזְמָהּ֙ (with her rings) וְחֶלְיָתָ֔הּ (and jewelry),

וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ (and went) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) מְאַהֲבֶ֑יהָ (her lovers),

וְאֹתִ֥י (and Me) שָׁכְחָ֖ה (she forgot)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃פ (of YHWH).

God’s Mercy to Israel

14  לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore), הִנֵּ֤ה (behold), אָֽנֹכִי֙ (I) מְפַתֶּ֔יהָ (am enticing her)

וְהֹֽלַכְתִּ֖יהָ (and I will bring her) הַמִּדְבָּ֑ר (into the desert),

וְדִבַּרְתִּ֖י (and I have spoken) עַל (upon) לִבָּֽהּ׃ (her heart).

15  וְנָתַ֨תִּי (And I will give) לָ֤הּ (to her) אֶת־ (-) כְּרָמֶ֙יהָ֙ (her vineyards) מִשָּׁ֔ם (from there),

וְאֶת־ (and) עֵ֥מֶק (the valley) עָכ֖וֹר (of Achor)

לְפֶ֣תַח (as a door) תִּקְוָ֑ה (of hope).

וְעָ֤נְתָה (And she will sing) שָּׁ֙מָּה֙ (there),

כִּימֵ֣י (as in the days) נְעוּרֶ֔יהָ (of her youth),

וִּכְי֖וֹם (and as in the day) עֲלֹתָ֥הּ (of her coming up) מֵאֶֽרֶץ־ (from the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ס (of Egypt).

16  וְהָיָ֤ה (And it will be) בַיּוֹם־ (on the day), הַהוּא֙ (that)

נְאֻם־ (utterance) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH),

תִּקְרְאִ֖י (That you will call out) אִישִׁ֑י (My Ishi);

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תִקְרְאִי־ (will you call) לִ֥י (Me) ע֖וֹד (any longer) בַּעְלִֽי׃ (My Baal).

17  וַהֲסִרֹתִ֛י (And For I will take) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֥וֹת (the names) הַבְּעָלִ֖ים (of the Baals) מִפִּ֑יהָ (from her mouth),

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִזָּכְר֥וּ (will they be remembered) ע֖וֹד (anymore) בִּשְׁמָֽם׃ (by their name).

18  וְכָרַתִּ֨י (And I will make) לָהֶ֤ם (for them) בְּרִית֙ (a covenant) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַה֔וּא (that)

עִם־ (with) חַיַּ֤ת (the beasts) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (of the field), וְעִם־ (and with) ע֣וֹף (the birds) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens),

וְרֶ֖מֶשׂ (and with the creeping things) הָֽאֲדָמָ֑ה (of the ground).

וְקֶ֨שֶׁת (And bow) וְחֶ֤רֶב (and sword) וּמִלְחָמָה֙ (and battle)

אֶשְׁבּ֣וֹר (I will break off) מִן־ (from) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth),

וְהִשְׁכַּבְתִּ֖ים (and I will make them lie down) לָבֶֽטַח׃ (in safety).

19  וְאֵרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ (And I will betroth you) לִ֖י (to Me) לְעוֹלָ֑ם (forever);

וְאֵרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ (and I will betroth you) לִי֙ (to Me) בְּצֶ֣דֶק (in righteousness),

וּבְמִשְׁפָּ֔ט (and in justice), וּבְחֶ֖סֶד (and with loving devotion), וּֽבְרַחֲמִֽים׃ (and with compassion).

20  וְאֵרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ (And I will betroth you) לִ֖י (to Me) בֶּאֱמוּנָ֑ה (in faithfulness).

וְיָדַ֖עַתְּ (And you will know) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָֽה׃ס (YHWH).

21  וְהָיָ֣ה׀ (And it will come to pass) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day), הַה֗וּא (in that) אֶֽעֱנֶה֙ (I will answer),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),

אֶעֱנֶ֖ה (I will answer) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (the heavens),

וְהֵ֖ם (and they) יַעֲנ֥וּ (will answer) אֶת־ (-) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth);

22  וְהָאָ֣רֶץ (and the earth) תַּעֲנֶ֔ה (will answer) אֶת־ (with) הַדָּגָ֖ן (the grain),

וְאֶת־ (and with) הַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ (the new wine), וְאֶת־ (and with) הַיִּצְהָ֑ר (the oil);

וְהֵ֖ם (and they) יַעֲנ֥וּ (will answer) אֶֽת־ (-) יִזְרְעֶֽאל׃ (Jezreel).

23  וּזְרַעְתִּ֤יהָ (And I will sow her) לִּי֙ (for Myself) בָּאָ֔רֶץ (in the land);

וְרִֽחַמְתִּ֖י (and I will show compassion to) אֶת־ (-) לֹ֣א (Lo-) רֻחָ֑מָה (ruhama);

וְאָמַרְתִּ֤י (and I will say to) לְלֹֽא־ (Lo-) עַמִּי֙ (ammi),

עַמִּי־ (My people); אַ֔תָּה (you are)

וְה֖וּא (and he) יֹאמַ֥ר (will say),

אֱלֹהָֽי׃פ (My God).
