A Call to Rebuild the Temple
(Ezra 5:1–5)

1  בִּשְׁנַ֤ת (In the year) שְׁתַּ֙יִם֙ (second) לְדָרְיָ֣וֶשׁ (of Darius) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), בַּחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ (in the month), הַשִּׁשִּׁ֔י (sixth) בְּי֥וֹם (on day) אֶחָ֖ד (one) לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ (of the month), הָיָ֨ה (came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֜ה (of YHWH) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) חַגַּ֣י (of Haggai) הַנָּבִ֗יא (the prophet) אֶל־ (to) זְרֻבָּבֶ֤ל (Zerubbabel) בֶּן־ (son) שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵל֙ (of Shealtiel), פַּחַ֣ת (governor) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), וְאֶל־ (and to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֧עַ (Joshua) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹצָדָ֛ק (of Jehozadak), הַכֹּהֵ֥ן (the priest), הַגָּד֖וֹל (high) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  כֹּ֥ה (thus) אָמַ֛ר (speaks) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts),

לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), הָעָ֤ם (The people) הַזֶּה֙ (this) אָֽמְר֔וּ (says), לֹ֥א (Not) עֶת־ (the time) בֹּ֛א (has come),

עֶת־ (the time for) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) לְהִבָּנֽוֹת׃פ (to be built).

3  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And came) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) חַגַּ֥י (of Haggai) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),

4  הַעֵ֤ת (Is it time) לָכֶם֙ (for you⁺) אַתֶּ֔ם (yourselves),

לָשֶׁ֖בֶת (to dwell) בְּבָתֵּיכֶ֣ם (in your⁺ houses), סְפוּנִ֑ים (paneled)

וְהַבַּ֥יִת (and the house) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) חָרֵֽב׃ (is desolate)?

5  וְעַתָּ֕ה (And now) כֹּ֥ה (thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֑וֹת (Hosts);

שִׂ֥ימוּ (Set) לְבַבְכֶ֖ם (your⁺ heart) עַל־ (upon) דַּרְכֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ ways).

6  זְרַעְתֶּ֨ם (You⁺ have sown) הַרְבֵּ֜ה (much),

וְהָבֵ֣א (and you have brought in) מְעָ֗ט (little);

אָכ֤וֹל (you eat), וְאֵין־ (and not); לְשָׂבְעָה֙ (to satisfaction)

שָׁת֣וֹ (you drink), וְאֵין־ (and not) לְשָׁכְרָ֔ה (to drunkenness);

לָב֖וֹשׁ (One wears clothes) וְאֵין־ (and it there is no); לְחֹ֣ם (warmth) ל֑וֹ (to it)

וְהַ֨מִּשְׂתַּכֵּ֔ר (and the wage earner) מִשְׂתַּכֵּ֖ר (earns wages) אֶל־ (into) צְר֥וֹר (a bag) נָקֽוּב׃פ (pierced through).

7  כֹּ֥ה (Thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) צְבָא֑וֹת (of Hosts);

שִׂ֥ימוּ (Set) לְבַבְכֶ֖ם (your⁺ heart) עַל־ (upon) דַּרְכֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ ways).

8  עֲל֥וּ (Go up) הָהָ֛ר (to the mountains),

וַהֲבֵאתֶ֥ם (and bring) עֵ֖ץ (wood), וּבְנ֣וּ (and build) הַבָּ֑יִת (the house);

וְאֶרְצֶה־ (that I may take pleasure) בּ֥וֹ (in it) וְאֶכָּבֵד (and be glorified),

אָמַ֥ר (says) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

9  פָּנֹ֤ה (You turned) אֶל־ (to) הַרְבֵּה֙ (find multiplying),

וְהִנֵּ֣ה (and behold), לִמְעָ֔ט (little);

וַהֲבֵאתֶ֥ם (and you⁺ brought it) הַבַּ֖יִת (home), וְנָפַ֣חְתִּי (and I blew away) ב֑וֹ (it)

יַ֣עַן (Because) מֶ֗ה (of what) נְאֻם֙ (a declaration) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts).

יַ֗עַן (Because) בֵּיתִי֙ (of My house) אֲשֶׁר־ (the way that) ה֣וּא (it is) חָרֵ֔ב (in ruins),

וְאַתֶּ֥ם (while you⁺) רָצִ֖ים (are running)

אִ֥ישׁ (each man) לְבֵיתֽוֹ׃ (to his house).

10  עַל־ (For) כֵּ֣ן (thus)

עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם (above you⁺) כָּלְא֥וּ (withhold) שָמַ֖יִם (the heavens) מִטָּ֑ל (the dew),

וְהָאָ֖רֶץ (and the earth) כָּלְאָ֥ה (withholds) יְבוּלָֽהּ׃ (its fruit).

11  וָאֶקְרָ֨א (And I have called for) חֹ֜רֶב (a drought) עַל־ (on) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land),

וְעַל־ (and on) הֶהָרִ֗ים (the mountains),

וְעַל־ (and on) הַדָּגָן֙ (the grain), וְעַל־ (and on) הַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ (the new wine), וְעַל־ (and on) הַיִּצְהָ֔ר (the oil),

וְעַ֛ל (and on) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whatever) תּוֹצִ֖יא (brings forth), הָאֲדָמָ֑ה (the ground)

וְעַל־ (and on) הָֽאָדָם֙ (mankind), וְעַל־ (and on) הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה (the livestock),

וְעַ֖ל (and on) כָּל־ (all) יְגִ֥יעַ (the labor) כַּפָּֽיִם׃ס (of the hands).

The People Obey

12  וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע (And listened) זְרֻבָּבֶ֣ל׀ (Zerubbabel) בֶּֽן־ (son) שַׁלְתִּיאֵ֡ל (of Shealtiel), וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (and Joshua) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹצָדָק֩ (of Jehozadak), הַכֹּהֵ֨ן (the priest), הַגָּד֜וֹל (high) וְכֹ֣ל׀ (and along with all) שְׁאֵרִ֣ית (the remnant) הָעָ֗ם (of the people), בְּקוֹל֙ (to the voice) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֔ם (their God), וְעַל־ (and to) דִּבְרֵי֙ (the words) חַגַּ֣י (of Haggai) הַנָּבִ֔יא (the prophet), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (because) שְׁלָח֖וֹ (had sent him) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם (their God) וַיִּֽירְא֥וּ (and were afraid) הָעָ֖ם (the people) מִפְּנֵ֥י (before the face) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

13  וַ֠יֹּאמֶר (And spoke) חַגַּ֞י (Haggai) מַלְאַ֧ךְ (the messenger) יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) בְּמַלְאֲכ֥וּת (the message) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) לָעָ֣ם (to the people), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying),

אֲנִ֥י (I am) אִתְּכֶ֖ם (with you⁺)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

14  וַיָּ֣עַר (And stirred up) יְהוָ֡ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) רוּחַ֩ (the spirit) זְרֻבָּבֶ֨ל (of Zerubbabel) בֶּן־ (son) שַׁלְתִּיאֵ֜ל (of Shealtiel), פַּחַ֣ת (governor) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah), וְאֶת־ (and) ר֙וּחַ֙ (the spirit) יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ (of Joshua) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹצָדָק֙ (of Jehozadak), הַכֹּהֵ֣ן (the priest), הַגָּד֔וֹל (high) וְֽאֶת־ (and) ר֔וּחַ (the spirit) כֹּ֖ל (of all) שְׁאֵרִ֣ית (the remnant) הָעָ֑ם (of the people); וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (and they came) וַיַּעֲשׂ֣וּ (and did) מְלָאכָ֔ה (work) בְּבֵית־ (on the house) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts), אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃פ (their God), 15  בְּי֨וֹם (on day) עֶשְׂרִ֧ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֛ה (and four) לַחֹ֖דֶשׁ (of the month), בַּשִּׁשִּׁ֑י (in the sixth month) בִּשְׁנַ֥ת (in the year) שְׁתַּ֖יִם (second) לְדָרְיָ֥וֶשׁ (of Darius) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king).
