The Coming Glory of God’s House

1  בַּשְּׁבִיעִ֕י (In the seventh month) בְּעֶשְׂרִ֥ים (on the twenty) וְאֶחָ֖ד (and first) לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ (of the month), הָיָה֙ (came) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) חַגַּ֥י (Haggai), הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  אֱמָר־ (Speak) נָ֗א (now) אֶל־ (to) זְרֻבָּבֶ֤ל (Zerubbabel) בֶּן־ (son) שַׁלְתִּיאֵל֙ (of Shealtiel), פַּחַ֣ת (governor) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), וְאֶל־ (and to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ (Joshua) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹצָדָ֖ק (of Jehozadak), הַכֹּהֵ֣ן (the priest), הַגָּד֑וֹל (high) וְאֶל־ (and to) שְׁאֵרִ֥ית (the remnant) הָעָ֖ם (of the people), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 3  מִ֤י (Who is) בָכֶם֙ (among you⁺) הַנִּשְׁאָ֔ר (remaining) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) רָאָה֙ (saw) אֶת־ (-) הַבַּ֣יִת (the house) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) בִּכְבוֹד֖וֹ (in its glory)? הָרִאשׁ֑וֹן (Former) וּמָ֨ה (and how) אַתֶּ֜ם (you⁺) רֹאִ֤ים (are seeing) אֹתוֹ֙ (it) עַ֔תָּה (now)? הֲל֥וֹא (Is it not) כָמֹ֛הוּ (in comparison) כְּאַ֖יִן (as nothing) בְּעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃ (in your⁺ eyes)?

4  וְעַתָּ֣ה (And now) חֲזַ֣ק (be strong), זְרֻבָּבֶ֣ל׀ (O Zerubbabel),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֡ה (of YHWH);

וַחֲזַ֣ק (and be strong), יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (O Joshua), בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹצָדָק֩ (of Jehozadak),

הַכֹּהֵ֨ן (the priest); הַגָּד֜וֹל (high)

וַחֲזַ֨ק (and be strong), כָּל־ (all) עַ֥ם (you people) הָאָ֛רֶץ (of the land),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH),

וַֽעֲשׂ֑וּ (and work); כִּֽי־ (for) אֲנִ֣י (I am) אִתְּכֶ֔ם (with you⁺)

נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ (Hosts).

5  אֶֽת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֞ר (the word) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) כָּרַ֤תִּי (I cut) אִתְּכֶם֙ (with you⁺)

בְּצֵאתְכֶ֣ם (at your⁺ coming forth) מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם (from Egypt)

וְרוּחִ֖י (and My Spirit) עֹמֶ֣דֶת (is standing) בְּתוֹכְכֶ֑ם (in your⁺ midst)

אַל־ (do not) תִּירָֽאוּ׃ס (be afraid).

6  כִּ֣י (For) כֹ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts);

ע֥וֹד (Yet) אַחַ֖ת (once), מְעַ֣ט (a little while), הִ֑יא (it is)

וַאֲנִ֗י (and I) מַרְעִישׁ֙ (will be shaking) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם (the heavens), וְאֶת־ (and) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth),

וְאֶת־ (and) הַיָּ֖ם (the sea), וְאֶת־ (and) הֶחָרָבָֽה׃ (the dry land).

7  וְהִרְעַשְׁתִּי֙ (And I will shake) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (the nations),

וּבָ֖אוּ (and they will come); חֶמְדַּ֣ת (with the treasure) כָּל־ (of all) הַגּוֹיִ֑ם (the nations)

וּמִלֵּאתִ֞י (and I will fill) אֶת־ (-) הַבַּ֤יִת (the house) הַזֶּה֙ (this) כָּב֔וֹד (with glory),

אָמַ֖ר (says) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ (Hosts).

8  לִ֥י (Unto Me) הַכֶּ֖סֶף (is the silver) וְלִ֣י (and unto Me) הַזָּהָ֑ב (the gold)

נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ (Hosts).

9  גָּד֣וֹל (Greater) יִֽהְיֶ֡ה (will be) כְּבוֹד֩ (the glory) הַבַּ֨יִת (of the house) הַזֶּ֤ה (this) הָאַֽחֲרוֹן֙ (latter)

מִן־ (more than) הָ֣רִאשׁ֔וֹן (the former),

אָמַ֖ר (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֑וֹת (Hosts),

וּבַמָּק֤וֹם (and in the place) הַזֶּה֙ (this) אֶתֵּ֣ן (I will give) שָׁל֔וֹם (peace),

נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃פ (Hosts).

Blessings for a Defiled People

10  בְּעֶשְׂרִ֤ים (On the twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָה֙ (and fourth) לַתְּשִׁיעִ֔י (of the ninth month) בִּשְׁנַ֥ת (in the year) שְׁתַּ֖יִם (second) לְדָרְיָ֑וֶשׁ (of Darius), הָיָה֙ (came) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) חַגַּ֥י (Haggai) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 11  כֹּ֥ה (Thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֑וֹת (Hosts); שְׁאַל־ (Ask) נָ֧א (now) אֶת־ (-) הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים (the priests) תּוֹרָ֖ה (about the law), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 12  הֵ֣ן׀ (behold) יִשָּׂא־ (if should carry) אִ֨ישׁ (a man) בְּשַׂר־ (flesh) קֹ֜דֶשׁ (holy) בִּכְנַ֣ף (in the fold) בִּגְד֗וֹ (of his garment), וְנָגַ֣ע (and he touches) בִּ֠כְנָפוֹ (with his fold) אֶל־ (against) הַלֶּ֨חֶם (bread), וְאֶל־ (or) הַנָּזִ֜יד (stew), וְאֶל־ (or) הַיַּ֧יִן (wine), וְאֶל־ (or) שֶׁ֛מֶן (oil), וְאֶל־ (or) כָּל־ (any) מַאֲכָ֖ל (food), הֲיִקְדָּ֑שׁ (will it become holy)?

וַיַּעֲנ֧וּ (And answered) הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים (the priests) וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (and said), לֹֽא׃ (No).

13  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) חַגַּ֔י (Haggai), אִם־ (If) יִגַּ֧ע (touches) טְמֵא־ (one unclean) נֶ֛פֶשׁ (by a dead body) בְּכָל־ (any) אֵ֖לֶּה (of these things), הֲיִטְמָ֑א (will it be unclean)?

וַיַּעֲנ֧וּ (And answered) הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים (the priests) וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (and said), יִטְמָֽא׃ (It will be unclean).

14  וַיַּ֨עַן (And answered) חַגַּ֜י (Haggai), וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and said), כֵּ֣ן (Thus) הָֽעָם־ (is the people), הַ֠זֶּה (this) וְכֵן־ (and thus) הַגּ֨וֹי (is the nation) הַזֶּ֤ה (this) לְפָנַי֙ (before My face) נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH); וְכֵ֖ן (and thus) כָּל־ (is every) מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה (work) יְדֵיהֶ֑ם (of their hands); וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and what) יַקְרִ֛יבוּ (they offer) שָׁ֖ם (there) טָמֵ֥א (unclean) הֽוּא׃ (it is).

15  וְעַתָּה֙ (And now), שִֽׂימוּ־ (set) נָ֣א (please), לְבַבְכֶ֔ם (your⁺ heart) מִן־ (from) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) וָמָ֑עְלָה (and onward), מִטֶּ֧רֶם (from before) שֽׂוּם־ (was placed) אֶ֛בֶן (a stone) אֶל־ (upon) אֶ֖בֶן (a stone) בְּהֵיכַ֥ל (in the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH), 16  מִֽהְיוֹתָ֥ם (From their being) בָּא֙ (when one came) אֶל־ (toward) עֲרֵמַ֣ת (a heap) עֶשְׂרִ֔ים (of twenty) וְהָיְתָ֖ה (then there were) עֲשָׂרָ֑ה (but ten); בָּ֣א (When one came) אֶל־ (to) הַיֶּ֗קֶב (the wine vat) לַחְשֹׂף֙ (to draw out) חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים (fifty) פּוּרָ֔ה (from the press), וְהָיְתָ֖ה (then there were) עֶשְׂרִֽים׃ (but twenty). 17  הִכֵּ֨יתִי (I struck) אֶתְכֶ֜ם (you⁺) בַּשִּׁדָּפ֤וֹן (with the blight) וּבַיֵּֽרָקוֹן֙ (and with mildew) וּבַבָּרָ֔ד (and with hail) אֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (all) מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה (the work) יְדֵיכֶ֑ם (of your⁺ hands); וְאֵין־ (were not) אֶתְכֶ֥ם (and you⁺) אֵלַ֖י (with Me) נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

18  שִׂימוּ־ (Set) נָ֣א (now) לְבַבְכֶ֔ם (your⁺ heart) מִן־ (from) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) וָמָ֑עְלָה (and onward), מִיּוֹם֩ (from day) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֜ה (and four) לַתְּשִׁיעִ֗י (of the ninth month) לְמִן־ (from) הַיּ֛וֹם (the day) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יֻסַּ֥ד (was founded) הֵֽיכַל־ (the temple) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) שִׂ֥ימוּ (set) לְבַבְכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ heart). 19  הַע֤וֹד (Is still) הַזֶּ֙רַע֙ (the seed) בַּמְּגוּרָ֔ה (in the barn)? וְעַד־ (And until) הַגֶּ֨פֶן (the vine), וְהַתְּאֵנָ֧ה (and the fig tree), וְהָרִמּ֛וֹן (and the pomegranate), וְעֵ֥ץ (and tree), הַזַּ֖יִת (the olive) לֹ֣א (not) נָשָׂ֑א (have borne); מִן־ (from) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) אֲבָרֵֽךְ׃ס (I will bless).

20  וַיְהִ֨י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֤ה׀ (of YHWH) שֵׁנִית֙ (a second time) אֶל־ (to) חַגַּ֔י (Haggai) בְּעֶשְׂרִ֧ים (on twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֛ה (and four) לַחֹ֖דֶשׁ (of the month), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 21  אֱמֹ֕ר (Speak) אֶל־ (to) זְרֻבָּבֶ֥ל (Zerubbabel), פַּֽחַת־ (governor) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אֲנִ֣י (I) מַרְעִ֔ישׁ (am going to shake) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (the heavens) וְאֶת־ (and) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth);

22  וְהָֽפַכְתִּי֙ (and I will overthrow) כִּסֵּ֣א (the throne) מַמְלָכ֔וֹת (of kingdoms),

וְהִ֨שְׁמַדְתִּ֔י (and I will destroy) חֹ֖זֶק (the strength)

מַמְלְכ֣וֹת (of the kingdoms) הַגּוֹיִ֑ם (of the nations);

וְהָפַכְתִּ֤י (and I will overthrow) מֶרְכָּבָה֙ (the chariots), וְרֹ֣כְבֶ֔יהָ (and those riding them)

וְיָרְד֤וּ (and will come down), סוּסִים֙ (the horses) וְרֹ֣כְבֵיהֶ֔ם (and their riders)

אִ֖ישׁ (each man) בְּחֶ֥רֶב (by the sword) אָחִֽיו׃ (of his brother).

23  בַּיּ֣וֹם (On the day), הַה֣וּא (that)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH of) צְבָא֡וֹת (Hosts),

אֶ֠קָּחֲךָ (I will take you) זְרֻבָּבֶ֨ל (Zerubbabel),

בֶּן־ (son) שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵ֤ל (of Shealtiel), עַבְדִּי֙ (My servant),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),

וְשַׂמְתִּ֖יךָ (and will set you) כַּֽחוֹתָ֑ם (as a signet ring);

כִּֽי־ (for) בְךָ֣ (you) בָחַ֔רְתִּי (I have chosen)

נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ (Hosts).
