Jacob’s Departure

1 וַיִּקְרָ֥א (And called) יִצְחָ֛ק (Isaac) אֶֽל־ (to) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob), וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ (and he blessed) אֹת֑וֹ (him) וַיְצַוֵּ֙הוּ֙ (and he commanded him) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) ל֔וֹ (to him), לֹֽא־ (Not) תִקַּ֥ח (you shall take) אִשָּׁ֖ה (a wife) מִבְּנ֥וֹת (from the daughters) כְּנָֽעַן׃ (of Canaan).

2 ק֥וּם (Arise), לֵךְ֙ (go) פַּדֶּ֣נָֽה (to Paddan-) אֲרָ֔ם (aram), בֵּ֥יתָה (to the house) בְתוּאֵ֖ל (of Bethuel), אֲבִ֣י (the father) אִמֶּ֑ךָ (of your mother), וְקַח־ (and take) לְךָ֤ (for yourself) מִשָּׁם֙ (from there) אִשָּׁ֔ה (a wife) מִבְּנ֥וֹת (from the daughters) לָבָ֖ן (of Laban) אֲחִ֥י (the brother) אִמֶּֽךָ׃ (of your mother).

3 וְאֵ֤ל (And may El-) שַׁדַּי֙ (Shaddai) יְבָרֵ֣ךְ (bless) אֹֽתְךָ֔ (you) וְיַפְרְךָ֖ (and make you fruitful) וְיַרְבֶּ֑ךָ (and multiply you), וְהָיִ֖יתָ (and you shall be) לִקְהַ֥ל (an assembly) עַמִּֽים׃ (of peoples).

4 וְיִֽתֶּן־ (And may He give) לְךָ֙ (to you) אֶת־ (-) בִּרְכַּ֣ת (the blessing) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (of Abraham), לְךָ֖ (to you) וּלְזַרְעֲךָ֣ (and your seed) אִתָּ֑ךְ (with you), לְרִשְׁתְּךָ֙ (to inherit) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) מְגֻרֶ֔יךָ (of your sojourning), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) נָתַ֥ן (gave) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) לְאַבְרָהָֽם׃ (to Abraham).

5 וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח (And sent away) יִצְחָק֙ (Isaac) אֶֽת־ (-) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob); וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ (and he went) פַּדֶּ֣נָֽה (to Paddan-) אֲרָ֑ם (aram) אֶל־ (to) לָבָ֤ן (Laban), בֶּן־ (son) בְּתוּאֵל֙ (of Bethuel) הָֽאֲרַמִּ֔י (the Aramaean), אֲחִ֣י (the brother) רִבְקָ֔ה (of Rebekah) אֵ֥ם (the mother) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (of Jacob) וְעֵשָֽׂו׃ (and Esau).

6 וַיַּ֣רְא (And saw) עֵשָׂ֗ו (Esau) כִּֽי־ (that) בֵרַ֣ךְ (had blessed) יִצְחָק֮ (Isaac) אֶֽת־ (-) יַעֲקֹב֒ (Jacob) וְשִׁלַּ֤ח (and sent away) אֹתוֹ֙ (him) פַּדֶּ֣נָֽה (to Paddan-) אֲרָ֔ם (aram) לָקַֽחַת־ (to take) ל֥וֹ (for himself) מִשָּׁ֖ם (from there) אִשָּׁ֑ה (a wife), בְּבָרֲכ֣וֹ (as he blessed) אֹת֔וֹ (him) וַיְצַ֤ו (and he gave a charge) עָלָיו֙ (him), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), לֹֽא־ (Not) תִקַּ֥ח (you shall take) אִשָּׁ֖ה (a wife) מִבְּנ֥וֹת (from the daughters) כְּנָֽעַן׃ (of Canaan),

7 וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע (and listened) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob) אֶל־ (to) אָבִ֖יו (his father) וְאֶל־ (and to) אִמּ֑וֹ (his mother) וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ (and he went) פַּדֶּ֥נָֽה (to Paddan-) אֲרָֽם׃ (aram).

8 וַיַּ֣רְא (And saw) עֵשָׂ֔ו (Esau) כִּ֥י (that) רָע֖וֹת (were evil) בְּנ֣וֹת (the daughters) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan) בְּעֵינֵ֖י (in the eyes) יִצְחָ֥ק (of Isaac) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father).

9 וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (And went) עֵשָׂ֖ו (Esau) אֶל־ (to) יִשְׁמָעֵ֑אל (Ishmael), וַיִּקַּ֡ח (and he took) אֶֽת־ (-) מָחֲלַ֣ת׀ (Mahalath) בַּת־ (the daughter) יִשְׁמָעֵ֨אל (of Ishmael) בֶּן־ (son) אַבְרָהָ֜ם (of Abraham), אֲח֧וֹת (the sister) נְבָי֛וֹת (of Nebajoth), עַל־ (in addition to) נָשָׁ֖יו (the wives) ל֥וֹ (unto him), לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ס (as his wife).

Jacob’s Ladder

10 וַיֵּצֵ֥א (And went out) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) מִבְּאֵ֣ר (from Beer-) שָׁ֑בַע (sheba), וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ (and went) חָרָֽנָה׃ (toward Haran).

11 וַיִּפְגַּ֨ע (And he came) בַּמָּק֜וֹם (to the place) וַיָּ֤לֶן (and he lodged) שָׁם֙ (there), כִּי־ (because) בָ֣א (had set) הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ (the sun), וַיִּקַּח֙ (and he took) מֵאַבְנֵ֣י (from the stones) הַמָּק֔וֹם (of the place) וַיָּ֖שֶׂם (and put it at) מְרַֽאֲשֹׁתָ֑יו (his head), וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב (and he lay down) בַּמָּק֥וֹם (in place) הַהֽוּא׃ (that).

12 וַֽיַּחֲלֹ֗ם (And he dreamed), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and behold) סֻלָּם֙ (a ladder) מֻצָּ֣ב (was set up) אַ֔רְצָה (on the earth), וְרֹאשׁ֖וֹ (and its top) מַגִּ֣יעַ (reached) הַשָּׁמָ֑יְמָה (to the heavens); וְהִנֵּה֙ (and behold) מַלְאֲכֵ֣י (the angels) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) עֹלִ֥ים (were ascending) וְיֹרְדִ֖ים (and descending) בּֽוֹ׃ (on it).

13 וְהִנֵּ֨ה (And behold), יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) נִצָּ֣ב (was standing) עָלָיו֮ (above it) וַיֹּאמַר֒ (and said), אֲנִ֣י (I am) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵי֙ (the God) אַבְרָהָ֣ם (of Abraham) אָבִ֔יךָ (your father), וֵאלֹהֵ֖י (and the God) יִצְחָ֑ק (of Isaac). הָאָ֗רֶץ (The land) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (which) אַתָּה֙ (you) שֹׁכֵ֣ב (are lying) עָלֶ֔יהָ (on), לְךָ֥ (to you) אֶתְּנֶ֖נָּה (I will give it), וּלְזַרְעֶֽךָ׃ (and to your seed).

14 וְהָיָ֤ה (And shall be) זַרְעֲךָ֙ (your seed) כַּעֲפַ֣ר (as the dust) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the earth), וּפָרַצְתָּ֛ (and you shall break forth) יָ֥מָּה (to the west), וָקֵ֖דְמָה (and the east), וְצָפֹ֣נָה (and the north), וָנֶ֑גְבָּה (and the south). וְנִבְרֲכ֥וּ (And shall be blessed) בְךָ֛ (in you) כָּל־ (all) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת (the families) הָאֲדָמָ֖ה (of the earth), וּבְזַרְעֶֽךָ׃ (and in your seed).

15 וְהִנֵּ֨ה (And behold), אָנֹכִ֜י (I am) עִמָּ֗ךְ (with you) וּשְׁמַרְתִּ֙יךָ֙ (and will keep you) בְּכֹ֣ל (in all), אֲשֶׁר־ (wherever) תֵּלֵ֔ךְ (you go), וַהֲשִׁ֣בֹתִ֔יךָ (and I will bring you back) אֶל־ (to) הָאֲדָמָ֖ה (the land) הַזֹּ֑את (this). כִּ֚י (For) לֹ֣א (not) אֶֽעֱזָבְךָ֔ (I will leave you) עַ֚ד (until) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) אִם־ (-) עָשִׂ֔יתִי (I have done) אֵ֥ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי (I have spoken) לָֽךְ׃ (to you).

16 וַיִּיקַ֣ץ (And awoke) יַעֲקֹב֮ (Jacob) מִשְּׁנָתוֹ֒ (from his sleep), וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (and said), אָכֵן֙ (Surely) יֵ֣שׁ (is) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) בַּמָּק֖וֹם (in place) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), וְאָנֹכִ֖י (and I) לֹ֥א (not) יָדָֽעְתִּי׃ (I did know it).

17 וַיִּירָא֙ (And he feared), וַיֹּאמַ֔ר (and he said), מַה־ (How) נּוֹרָ֖א (awesome) הַמָּק֣וֹם (this place) הַזֶּ֑ה (is)! אֵ֣ין (None) זֶ֗ה (this is) כִּ֚י (other) אִם־ (than) בֵּ֣ית (the house) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God); וְזֶ֖ה (and this is) שַׁ֥עַר (the gate) הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (of the heavens).

The Stone of Bethel

18 וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם (And rose early) יַעֲקֹ֜ב (Jacob) בַּבֹּ֗קֶר (in the morning) וַיִּקַּ֤ח (and he took) אֶת־ (-) הָאֶ֙בֶן֙ (the stone) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) שָׂ֣ם (he had put) מְרַֽאֲשֹׁתָ֔יו (under his head), וַיָּ֥שֶׂם (and he set up) אֹתָ֖הּ (it) מַצֵּבָ֑ה (as a pillar) וַיִּצֹ֥ק (and poured) שֶׁ֖מֶן (oil) עַל־ (on) רֹאשָֽׁהּ׃ (top of it).

19 וַיִּקְרָ֛א (And he called) אֶת־ (-) שֵֽׁם־ (the name) הַמָּק֥וֹם (of place) הַה֖וּא (that) בֵּֽית־ (Beth-) אֵ֑ל (el); וְאוּלָ֛ם (but) ל֥וּז (Luz) שֵׁם־ (was the name) הָעִ֖יר (of the city) לָרִאשֹׁנָֽה׃ (at the first).

20 וַיִּדַּ֥ר (And vowed) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) נֶ֣דֶר (a vow), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אִם־ (If) יִהְיֶ֨ה (is) אֱלֹהִ֜ים (God) עִמָּדִ֗י (with me) וּשְׁמָרַ֙נִי֙ (and will keep me) בַּדֶּ֤רֶךְ (in the way) הַזֶּה֙ (this) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) אָנֹכִ֣י (I) הוֹלֵ֔ךְ (am going), וְנָֽתַן־ (and will give) לִ֥י (me) לֶ֛חֶם (bread) לֶאֱכֹ֖ל (to eat) וּבֶ֥גֶד (and clothing) לִלְבֹּֽשׁ׃ (to wear),

21 וְשַׁבְתִּ֥י (so that I may return) בְשָׁל֖וֹם (in peace) אֶל־ (to) בֵּ֣ית (the house) אָבִ֑י (of my father), וְהָיָ֧ה (then will be) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לִ֖י (my) לֵאלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

22 וְהָאֶ֣בֶן (And the stone) הַזֹּ֗את (this) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) שַׂ֙מְתִּי֙ (I have set up) מַצֵּבָ֔ה (as a pillar) יִהְיֶ֖ה (shall be) בֵּ֣ית (a house) אֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God). וְכֹל֙ (And all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תִּתֶּן־ (You give) לִ֔י (to me), עַשֵּׂ֖ר (tithing) אֲעַשְּׂרֶ֥נּוּ (I will tithe it) לָֽךְ׃ (to You).
