In the fiftieth year of Azariah’s reign over Judah
Azariah, also known as Uzziah, was a king of Judah who reigned for 52 years. His reign is noted for prosperity and military success, as well as a tragic end due to leprosy (2 Chronicles 26:16-21). The reference to the fiftieth year of his reign provides a chronological anchor, situating Pekahiah's ascension in the broader timeline of the divided monarchy. This period was marked by political instability in Israel, contrasting with Judah's relative stability under Azariah.

Pekahiah son of Menahem became king of Israel
Pekahiah was the son of Menahem, who had seized the throne of Israel through violence (2 Kings 15:14). Menahem's reign was characterized by brutality and heavy taxation to pay tribute to the Assyrian king Pul (2 Kings 15:19-20). Pekahiah's succession indicates a continuation of his father's dynasty, albeit briefly. His name, meaning "Yahweh has opened the eyes," contrasts with his short and troubled reign.

and reigned in Samaria
Samaria was the capital of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, established by Omri (1 Kings 16:24). It served as the political and religious center of Israel, often associated with idolatry and apostasy (1 Kings 16:31-33). The city's strategic location made it a focal point for conflict and conquest, particularly by the Assyrians. Samaria's significance is underscored by its frequent mention in prophetic literature, symbolizing Israel's unfaithfulness.

two years
Pekahiah's reign was notably brief, lasting only two years. This short duration reflects the ongoing political turmoil and frequent coups in the Northern Kingdom. His assassination by Pekah, one of his own officers (2 Kings 15:25), underscores the instability and violence that plagued Israel during this period. The brevity of his reign highlights the contrast with the longer, more stable reigns in Judah, such as that of Azariah.

What Does 2 Kings 15:23 Mean
In the fiftieth year of Azariah’s reign over Judah

“In the fiftieth year of Azariah’s reign over Judah…”

• Scripture records Azariah (also called Uzziah) enjoying a remarkably long rule of fifty-two years (2 Kings 15:1–2; 2 Chronicles 26:3).

• The Spirit-directed historian dates Israel’s events by Judah’s king, confirming the accuracy of the divided-kingdom chronology (1 Kings 15:1; 2 Kings 8:16).

• God’s Word anchors history in real time, showing He works through actual rulers and years, not myth or legend. Isaiah’s call “in the year that King Uzziah died” (Isaiah 6:1) rests on the same timeline.

Pekahiah son of Menahem

“…Pekahiah son of Menahem…”

• Pekahiah inherits the throne because his father, Menahem, had seized power violently yet secured it by paying tribute to Assyria (2 Kings 15:14–20).

• The name change from Menahem to Pekahiah signals a new but still troubled chapter, echoing earlier father-son successions that kept Israel on an ungodly path (1 Kings 15:25–26; 2 Kings 13:10–11).

Deuteronomy 17:18–20 calls each king to copy and obey God’s Law; Pekahiah shows how rarely that charge was taken seriously in the northern kingdom.

became king of Israel

“…became king of Israel…”

• Though the throne is his, authority belongs to the Lord alone (Psalm 75:6-7); Pekahiah answers to the covenant God his nation has spurned (Hosea 8:4).

• His accession underlines the political fragmentation that followed Jeroboam I’s rebellion (1 Kings 12:16-20). The northern kingdom never achieves lasting stability because it refuses David’s line and, more importantly, David’s God (2 Kings 17:21-23).

• Even so, the Lord faithfully tracks each reign, proving He rules over all—even disobedient Israel (Proverbs 21:1).

and reigned in Samaria two years

“…and reigned in Samaria two years.”

• Samaria, founded by Omri (1 Kings 16:24), stands as a symbol of idolatry (Micah 1:5). Pekahiah’s brief two-year tenure shows the fragility that sin breeds (Proverbs 14:34).

• His assassination by Pekah son of Remaliah after such a short reign (2 Kings 15:25) highlights God’s judgment on persistent rebellion, just as earlier coups did (1 Kings 16:9-10; 2 Kings 10:9-10).

• The fleeting rule underscores a biblical lesson: kingdoms rise and fall, but “the word of the Lord stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8).

summary

2 Kings 15:23 fixes Pekahiah’s reign precisely, displays the lineage of a turbulent throne, reminds us that every king answers to God, and illustrates how sin shortens stability. The verse is a sober marker on Israel’s downward spiral, yet it also testifies that the Lord chronicles history with perfect precision, guiding events toward His unshakable purposes.

(23-26) THE REIGN OF PEKAHIAH

(Heb., P?kahy?h).

(23) In the fiftieth year.--The forty-ninth, if verse seventeen were exact.

(25) But . . . a captain of his.--And . . . his adjutant (or knight, 2Kings 7:2).

The palace of the king's house.--The same expression occurred in 1Kings 16:18. The word armon, rendered "palace," is usually explained as meaning citadel or keep, from a root meaning to be high. (Comp. ? ???? in Greek.) Ewald makes it the harem, which, as the innermost and most strongly-guarded part of an Oriental palace, is probably meant here. Thither Pekahiah had fled for refuge before the conspirators.

With Argob and Arieh.--Pekah slew these two persons, probably officers of the royal guard, who stood by their master, as well as the king himself.

The peculiar names are an indication of the historical character of the account. Argob suggests that the person who bore this name was a native of the district of Bashan so designated (1Kings 4:13); Arieh ("lion"), like our own Cceur-de-Lion, betokens strength and bravery. (Comp. 1Chronicles 12:8, "The Gadites, whose faces were as the faces of lions.") . . .

Verses 23-26. - SHORT REIGN OF PEKA-HIAH. The short reign of Pekahiah was wholly undistinguished. He held the throne for two years only, or perhaps for parts of two years, and performed no action that any historian has thought worthy of record. Our author has nothing to relate of him but the circumstances of his death (ver. 25), wherewith he combines the usual formulae (vers. 23, 24, 26).
