2 Kings 15

Azariah Reigns in Judah
(2 Chronicles 26:3–23)

1In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam’s (the people will contend) reign over Israel (he wrestles with God), Azariah (Uzziah)a son of Amaziah (YHWH is mighty) became king of Judah (praised). 2He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem (city of peace) fifty-two years. His mother’s name was Jecoliah (YHWH is able); she was from Jerusalem. 3And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH}, just as his father Amaziah (YHWH is mighty) had done.

4Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there.

5And the LORD {YHWH} afflicted the king with leprosy (Leprosy)b until the day he died, so that he lived in a separate house while his son Jotham (YHWH is perfect) had charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.

6As for the rest of the acts of Azariah (YHWH has helped), along with all his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah (praised)?

7And Azariah (YHWH has helped) rested with his fathers and was buried near them \with his fathers/c in the City of David (beloved). And his son Jotham (YHWH is perfect) reigned in his place.

Zechariah Reigns in Israel

8In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah’s (YHWH has helped) reign over Judah (praised), Zechariah (YHWH remembers) son of Jeroboam (the people will contend) became king of Israel (he wrestles with God), and he reigned in Samaria (watch mountain) six months. 9And he did evil in the sight of the LORD {YHWH}, as his fathers had done. He did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam (the people will contend) son of Nebat (aspect) had caused Israel (he wrestles with God) to commit.

10Then Shallum (retribution) son of Jabesh (dry) conspired against Zechariah, struck him down and killed him in front of the people [in Ibleam],d and reigned in his place.

11As for the rest of the acts of Zechariah (YHWH remembers), they are indeed written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel (he wrestles with God). 12So the word of the LORD {YHWH} spoken to Jehu (YHWH is He) was fulfilled: “Four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel (he wrestles with God).”

13In the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah’s (Azariah)e reign over Judah (praised), Shallum (retribution) son of Jabesh (dry) became king, and he reigned in Samaria (watch mountain) one full month.

14Then Menahem (comforter) son of Gadi (my fortune) went up from Tirzah (favorable) to Samaria (watch mountain), struck down and killed Shallum (retribution) son of Jabesh (dry), and reigned in his place.

15As for the rest of the acts of Shallum (retribution), along with the conspiracy he led, they are indeed written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel (he wrestles with God).

16At that time Menahem (comforter), starting from Tirzah (favorable), attacked Tiphsah (cross over) and everyone in its vicinity, because they would not open their gates. So he attacked Tiphsah and ripped open all the pregnant women.

19Then Pul (Tiglath-pileser)f king of Assyria (a step) invaded the land, and Menahem (comforter) gave Pul (distinguishing) a thousand talents of silver <37.7 t / 34.2 mt>g in order to gain his support and strengthen his own grip on the kingdom. 20Menahem (comforter) exacted this money from each of the wealthy men of Israel (he wrestles with God)—fifty shekels of silver <1.26 lb / 569.8 g>h from each man—to give to the king of Assyria (a step). So the king of Assyria withdrew and did not remain in the land.

21As for the rest of the acts of Menahem (comforter), along with all his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel (he wrestles with God)?

25Then his officer, Pekah (expand) son of Remaliah (protected by YHWH), conspired against him along with Argob (heap of clods), Arieh (lion), and fifty men of Gilead (rocky region). And at the citadel of the king’s palace in Samaria (watch mountain), Pekah struck down and killed Pekahiah and reigned in his place.

29In the days of Pekah (expand) king of Israel (he wrestles with God), Tiglath-pileser (You will uncover the wonderful bond) king of Assyria (a step) came and captured Ijon (a ruin), Abel-beth-maacah (house of pressure), Janoah (He rests), Kedesh (holy place), Hazor (castle), Gilead (rocky region), and Galilee (circuit), including all the land of Naphtali (wrestling), and he took the people as captives to Assyria.
