Jesus Teaches at the Feast

1And after these things Jesus was walking in Galilee: for He was not willing to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill Him. 2Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles, was at hand. 3His brethren, therefore, said to Him, "Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that Thy disciples also may behold Thy works that Thou doest; 4for no one does anything in secret, and himself seeks to he known openly. If Thou doest these things, manifest Thyself to the world." 5For even His brethren did not believe on Him. 6Jesus, therefore, saith to them, "My time is not yet present; but your time is always ready. 7The world cannot hate you; but Me it hates, because I testify concerning it, that its works are evil. 8Go ye up to the feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, because My time has not yet been fulfilled." 9And, having said these things to them, He abode in Galilee.

10But, when His brethren went up to the feast, then He also went up, not openly, but as it were in secret. 11The Jews, therefore, were seeking Him at the feast, and said, "Where is He?" 12And there was much murmuring about Him among the multitudes: some were saying, "He is a good Man;" others were saying, "Nay, but He is misleading the multitude." 13No one, however, was speaking openly concerning Him, for fear of the Jews.

14But, it being now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple, and was teaching. 15The Jews, therefore, were marveling, saying, "How knoweth This Man letters, having never learned!" 16Jesus, therefore, answered them, and said, "My teaching is not Mine, but His Who sent Me. 17If any one wills to do His will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or whether I speak from Myself. 18He that speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He Who seeketh the glory of Him Who sent Him the Same is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

19Did not Moses give you the law? and not one of you does the law. Why are ye seeking to kill Me?" 20The multitude answered, "Thou hast a demon: who is seeking to kill you!" 21Jesus answered, and said to them, "I did one work, and ye all marvel because of this. 22Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers); and on the sabbath ye circumcise a man. 23If a man receives circumcision on a sabbath, that the law of Moses be not broken, are ye angry with Me, because I made a whole man well on the sabbath? 24Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment."

Is Jesus the Christ?

25Some, therefore, of those of Jerusalem said, "Is not This He Whom they are seeking to kill? 26And, behold, He is speaking openly, and they say nothing to Him! Did the rulers ever truly know that This is the Christ? 27But as to This Man we know whence He is; but, when the Christ cometh, no one knows whence He is." 28Jesus, therefore, cried in the temple, teaching and saying, "Ye both know Me, and know whence I am; and I have not come of Myself; but He Who sent Me is true, Whom ye know not. 29I know Him; because I am from Him, and He sent Me." 30They were seeking, therefore, to seize Him; and no one laid his hand upon Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31But of the multitude many believed on Him, and said, "When the Christ shall come, will He do more signs than those which This Man did?"

32The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning Him; and the high priests and the Pharisees sent officers to seize Him. 33Jesus, therefore, said, "Yet a little while am I with you, and I go to Him Who sent Me. 34Ye will seek Me, and will not find Me; and, where I am, ye cannot come." 35The Jews, therefore, said among themselves, "Where is This Man about to go, that we shall not find Him? Is He about to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36What is this word that He said, 'Ye will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, ye cannot come?'"

Living Water

37Now, on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood, and cried, saying, "If anyone thirst, let him come to Me and drink. 38He that believes on Me, as the Scripture said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water." 39But this He spake concerning the Spirit, Whom those who believed on Him were about to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Division over Jesus

40Some of the multitude, therefore, having heard these words, said, "Truly This is the Prophet;" 41others said, "This is the Christ;" but some said, "What? doth the Christ come out of Nazareth?" 42Did not the Scriptures say, that the Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" 43A division, therefore, arose in the multitude because of Him. 44And some of them were wishing to seize Him; but no one laid hands on Him.

The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45The officers, therefore, came to the high priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did ye not bring Him?" 46The officers answered, "Never did man speak thus!" 47The Pharisees; therefore, answered them, "Have ye also been led astray? 48Did any one of the rulers believe on Him, or of the Pharisees? 49But this multitude, who know not the law, are accursed." 50Nicodemus says to them (he who came to Him before, being one of them), 51"Does our law judge a man, unless it first hear from him, and know what he does?" 52They answered, and said to him, "Are you also of Galilee? Search, and see that out of Galilee arises no prophet." 53[And each one went to his house;
