May the LORD cut off all flattering lips

David asks God to judge those who use smooth speech to deceive and exploit others. In Israel’s public and royal life, flattering words could conceal treachery, gain influence, or undermine justice. The plea seeks God’s removal of corrupt speech that damages trust among His people.

Rom 16:18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ…
Pro 29:5 A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.

and every boastful tongue.

Boastful speech reveals pride, self-reliance, and contempt for God’s authority. Those who exalt themselves with their words will ultimately answer to the Lord, who defends truth and humbles the arrogant.

2Pe 2:18 With lofty but empty words, they appeal…
Pro 27:2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth…

“For the cause of the oppressed

God hears those crushed by injustice and affliction. His concern includes people without protection or power, such as the poor, widows, orphans, and foreigners. He is not indifferent to their suffering or to the violence of those who exploit them.

and for the groaning of the needy,

Their cries rise from real deprivation, fear, and helplessness, often from those without land or means of support, such as widows and orphans. Though human rulers may ignore them, the Lord sees their condition and remembers their need.

Psa 102:19-20 For He looked down from the heights of His sanctuary;…

I will now arise,” says the LORD.

Psa 4:8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone…
Psa 119:123 My eyes fail, looking for Your salvation,…

The words of the LORD are flawless,

God’s speech is entirely true, free from deceit, error, or corruption. In contrast to the flattering and dishonest words condemned earlier in the psalm, the LORD’s promises can be trusted completely.

Psa 18:30 As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD…
Pro 30:5 Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield…
Psa 119:160 The entirety of Your word is truth, and all Your judgments…

like silver refined in a furnace,

Rev 3:18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined by fire……
Job 23:10 Yet He knows the way I have taken; when He has tested me…

You, O LORD, will keep us;

Amid a society marked by lies, flattery, and oppression, the psalmist rests in the LORD’s covenant faithfulness. God sees the afflicted and preserves His people.

2Th 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you…
Jud 1:24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling…
1Pe 1:5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power…

You will forever guard us

His care is not limited to a single crisis or generation. Though the righteous may suffer under wickedness, they remain secure under His protection.

Psa 121:7-8 The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve…
Psa 125:2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds…
Psa 37:28 For the LORD loves justice and will not forsake His saints……

from this generation.

The generation in view is the corrupt society described earlier in the psalm, characterized by deceit, pride, and disregard for the vulnerable. God distinguishes His people from the wicked and will ultimately judge evil.

Act 2:40 With many other words he testified, and he urged them,…
Php 2:15 you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault…
Deu 32:5 His people have acted corruptly toward Him;…

The wicked wander freely,

When restraint collapses, evil moves openly and without fear of correction. Israel experienced such disorder during the era of the Judges and under kings who rejected God’s commands, allowing idolatry, injustice, and violence to spread.

Pro 1:16 For their feet run to evil, and they are swift…
Psa 59:6 They return in the evening, snarling like dogs…
Isa 57:20 But the wicked are like the storm-tossed sea,…

and vileness is exalted among men.

What God condemns is treated as admirable, while righteousness is despised. Such moral inversion marked the reigns of rulers like Ahab and Manasseh, whose influence led the nation further into corruption and judgment.

Ecc 10:6-7 Folly is appointed to great heights…
Pro 29:2 When the righteous flourish, the people rejoice,…
